What to do in a flood?
The following simple three-point checklist should be followed in flood-affected properties:
If your premises has been inundated over electrical wiring, power outlets or other electrical installations (including switchboards), organise a licensed electrical contractor to check the premises as soon as flooding has abated.
Your licensed electrical contractor must provide a “Form A” – a document which clears the premises for Ergon Energy to reconnect supply.
If the premises is still without supply once a licensed electrical contractor has given the all clear, contact Ergon Energy on 132296 for further advice.
Ergon Energy has also offered the following electrical safety advice to residents in flood-affected regions:
Unplug all electrical appliances affected by water and have them inspected by a licensed electrical contractor before use.
Do not operate electrical appliances or switches while standing in water or when you have bare feet.
Have a licensed electrical contractor check or isolate any parts of your electrical installation that have been affected by water - especially if the switchboard has been submerged or if your safety switch has tripped.
Take extra care around your switchboard if it's outdoors and wear synthetic or rubber-soled shoes. If you are in any doubt about your switchboard's safety, stay clear and call your licensed electrical contractor.
Switch power off at the switchboard during clean up operations that use water or high pressure cleaners. This will help prevent contact with electrical equipment and appliances.

What Should I Look For When Buying A TV?
Time to upgrade your TV? With all the new types of TVs out there, and all the great deals you can get on them, there has never been a better time to get a new TV. However, with all the different options, making your mind up is difficult. LCD or plasma? 720 or 1080i or 1080p? The choices can be overwhelming.
The first choice people generally need to make is screen size. Bigger is generally better, though it depends on the quality of the image and the viewing distance. If you usually sit a couple of metres away from your TV then a smaller screen is ok, if you sit five or more metres away, you will want a bigger screen. Naturally, cost is always an important factor, though it is better to get a smaller TV that has better quality as a rule.
Once you have decided on size, the next choice is generally between LCD and plasma. Often, LCDs are cheaper than plasma TVs, though plasma screens will last longer and they have a greater range of contrast than LCDs. For many people though, the difference in quality is not enough to outweigh the difference in cost.
Lastly, you need to think about resolution. TVs generally come in 720p and 1080i or 1080p. The i and the p refer to how the images are projected on the screen, with i standing for interlaced and p standing for progressive. 1080p is far better quality than the other two and even though not all the current content is made or broadcast in 1080p, if you can afford it, it is worth getting. At the least, get 1080i.

Which Hot Water System Is Right For Me?
Choosing the right hot water system can make a big difference to your wallet and your lifestyle. Hot water is a large part of a normal household’s utility bill, and there are a number of other different benefits from having either solar, gas or electric hot water heating, so getting the right system is important.
First, you have to work out your needs. How big is your household, is it going to grow in the future? How and when do you use hot water, do you have five people needing showers every morning? How much do you spend at the moment with what system?
Next, you need to find out if there are any government schemes running. Until recently the Queensland Government was offering a rebate for solar water heating systems and in the near future there could be similar offers.
Generally speaking, if your house has high hot water needs then you are best to get a gas or electric califont as they can supply instantaneous flow which is virtually endless, though electric califonts can be extremely expensive depending on when they are used.
If cost is more important, then you may want to get a solar water heating system, as even though these involve a large initial outlay, they then have extremely low operating costs. Gas hot water cylinders are usually cheaper to run than electric hot water cylinders.
If you are worried about your carbon footprint then solar is the best, with gas next and electricity as the worst.

Where Is The Best Place To Install An Air Conditioner?
Become the local weather god by installing an air conditioner. No longer are you helpless against the elements. Be the temperature you want to be, all the time. But, before you do, think about where you are going to install your air conditioner, as positioning is all important.
One of the key things to think about when installing an air conditioner is try to place the external part of the unit somewhere that it will not receive too much direct sunlight. The more sunlight your air conditioner receives, the harder it will have to work and the more money it will cost you. The best place to put it is on either a north or a south facing wall and the worst place to put it is on either an east or a west facing wall. It is a good idea to observe how the sun strikes your house during summer to ascertain which is the best spot.
While the sun is important, so too is internal positioning. You need to work out which rooms you want the air conditioner to work in, and which rooms you want it to be most effective in. Most people want the air conditioner to work best in their living area, though many want the whole house covered. This will depend on the size and strength of the air conditioning unit. If your unit is not too powerful, then put it in the room you want serviced. If it is capable of doing the whole house, put it in a central location, so you can control it using your doors.

How Does A TV Work?
Just about everyone has one in their home, most of us have more than one, but not many of us know how they work. Because TVs are so commonplace, it is easy to take them for granted, but when you think about it, it is pretty incredible. Somehow both images and sound are transmitted through the ether to your TV, which manages to sort them into a seamless experience. So, how do TVs work?
Well, most people know that the moving TV image is really just a number of still images flashed across the screen in rapid succession, and that each image is made up of a number of coloured dots, called pixels, but this is generally where comprehension ends and confusion begins.
TVs are similar to radios, they receive radio signals as well, but the wavelengths and frequencies are different. These signals carry both the audio and the video information, which the TV set ‘un-codes’.
Most people will have either an old fashioned cathode-ray TV (CRT) or a new flat screen LCD or plasma TV. For simplicity’s sake, we will discuss the old CRTs. In CRTs, the negatively charged cathode is a heated filament that ‘fires’ electrons, which travel through steering coils. The steering coils direct the electrons to different parts of the positively charged screen. The screen is covered in phosphor so when the electrons hit, it glows.

Is It Easy To Convert My Electric Stove To A Gas One?
Cooking with gas is so much more satisfying than with electricity. There is a reason that every professional kitchen is equipped with gas and not electric stoves. If you have an electric stove in your house but want the speed and control that gas offers then you probably want to convert, but how easy is it?
Luckily, it is a relatively easy process, no matter if you have reticulated gas to your door or not. All you need to do is get in touch with the team at Fallon Services, they are fully qualified and know everything there is to about converting from electric to gas. They will help you choose a new gas stove and run through the options. If you already have reticulated gas then it is just a matter of laying a pipe to the kitchen and connecting it. If you do not have reticulated gas, then you will need to get cylinders installed. Both options are relatively simple and can be done quickly and cheaply.
The team at Fallon Services can help you at every step of the way. Before you know it, you will be cooking on a restaurant quality stove that will enable you to cook with the speed and control the pros enjoy.

How Does A Hot Water System Work?
One of the many benefits of civilisation is having hot water on tap whenever you want or need it. The luxury of a hot shower is easy to forget until you are denied one, then you realise just how wonderful they are. Luckily for us, we no longer have to light a fire under a cauldron and wait for the water to boil before we have hot water. All we have to do is turn the tap and presto. But how does this work?
Most houses either have a hot water cylinder or a califont. Generally either of these systems will be powered by gas or electricity.
Hot water cylinders are the most common form of hot water production. They consist of a well insulated steel tank that has either a heating element running through the inside, for electric systems, or a gas burner at the bottom with a chimney flue running through the inside, for gas systems. Generally, the hot water cylinder heats water during a set period, often at night for electricity, and stores it at the same temperature using a thermostat.
The other common way of heating water is through a califont. In this system the water is heated on demand. It runs through a piping system and is heated by either a gas burner or a electric element.

What You Need To Do To Get Digital TV
There has been a lot of talk lately about digital TV but often not a lot of explanation about what you need to do to get digital TV at your place. The switch is going to be made in 2013 and if you aren’t ready by then you won’t be able to watch free to air TV. Luckily, it is not that hard to do and there are a whole bunch of benefits, including superior audio and visual quality and more channels.
One of the most important things you will need is the right type of TV antenna. Many TV antennas will be able to receive the digital signal but some of the older ones may not. You should get your digital TV antenna installer to check for you if you are unsure.
Also, you will need to have the right cable joining your TV antenna and your TV. Some older cabling will cause ghosting. The best sort of cable to get is low loss coaxial as this will provide you with the best reception.
Lastly, you will need to have a TV that has a built in digital receiver or else you will need a set top box. Most new TVs will have the built in receiver and all older TVs will require a set top box. Check the owner’s manual if you are unsure.
It is that simple. Make the switch now to enjoy superior audio and visual quality and a wealth of new channels.

What Can I Do To Save Energy In My Home?
Everyone has become more conscious of their carbon footprint and one of the best ways for us to individually reduce our effect on the environment is to try and save energy in our homes. As an added benefit, saving energy at home saves us money, as well as saving the planet.
Replace all of your old light bulbs with new, energy efficient ones. The old filament bulbs are incredibly wasteful, with about 90% of the energy used being burnt off in heat.
Fixing any drafts in your house.  Most houses, especially old ones, lose a lot of their heat through unnecessary drafts. By just closing these off, you can save energy.
Insulating your house. While this is relatively expensive compared to the other options, the long term savings are massive in comparison.
Ensure that you turn off all unused appliances and do not leave them on standby. Appliances on standby can account for between 5-10% of daily electricity consumption, for nothing.
Lower the temperature of your hot water cylinder. Many people have their cylinder’s temperature up higher than they need, effectively wasting those extra degrees of heat for no gain.
Buy energy efficient appliances. Nowadays, you can get appliances that use far less energy than even ones made ten years ago. Check when you buy a new appliance that it has a good energy rating.

Is It Illegal For Me To Do My Own Electrical Work?
Even if you have been playing around with Dick Smith kits your whole life or can build a ham radio out of spare parts, it is illegal for you to do your own home electrical work anywhere in Australia if you are not a registered electrical contractor.
The Electricity Act and Regulations Bill requires that only registered electrical contractors can undertake any and all electrical installation work. If you break this law then you can be prosecuted by the courts and could be fined a substantial sum of money. Also, you risk making your house unsellable and voiding your insurance in case of fire. More importantly, you endanger yourself, your family, your neighbours and even the fire brigade. It is simply not worth undertaking any electrical work in your house, no matter how simple.
In Queensland, it is even illegal to repair plug in appliances, so to be on the safe side, if you require any electrical work beyond fixing a blown fuse, then you should call in a registered electrical contractor. Remember, you cannot have work retro certified either, no matter the quality or standard of the work. The only choice is to have a registered electrician do the work.

How Bright Does Sports Lighting Get?
The trend toward night time sports events has increased over the past few years. It makes sense, as it means more people can make it to the game and the players escape the heat of the day. The lighting rigs at all the major stadiums are huge, providing near daylight conditions. So, how bright does sports lighting get?
Generally speaking, a rugby, league or Aussie Rules field will need 200 000 lumens to light up the entire field. A lumen is the Standard International measurement for the power of light as perceived by the human eye. A lumen is dependent on the distance from the source to the measuring device, as well as the spectrum. Roughly speaking, one candle is equivalent to one lumen.
While 200 000 lumens is enough to light up the field, in the bigger stadium, like the GABBA, they need far more light as they also need to light up the stands and they need to be able to use TV cameras. In these type of stadiums they will often go past the million lumen mark.
The main aim with sports lighting at the moment is to achieve the same luminosity with less power usage, as traditionally the big stadium rigs have been very inefficient.

How A Ceiling Fan Cools
Have you laid back, stared up at your ceiling fan and wondered how it cools the room? Well, if you have, then here is your answer.
The simple ceiling fan does not actually cool the air itself. That should be pretty obvious from its design, the fan is essentially an electric motor and four blades. In fact, the electric motor would make the room warmer rather than cooler.
All the ceiling fan does is improve air circulation, which can have either a heating effect or a cooling effect depending on the direction of rotation and the angulations of the blades. Unless, of course, the fan is set to rotate for winter conditions. If the fan rotates pushing air down, then it moves the warm air down, making the room hotter. If the fan rotates pulling air up, then it moves the warm air up and forces cool air to circulate, making the room cooler. Most fans come with a reverse rotation setting.
Therefore, it is important to have the fan rotating in the right direction depending on the time of the year. Ceiling fans are the cheapest way of cooling during the hot summer months, they are especially good for dry heat, while an air conditioner is better for wet heat.

5 Things To Remember Before You Attempt To Repair An Appliance
Ok, so you want to repair your appliance. Before you do, there are a number of things you need to think about.
Often, attempting to repair an appliance will void the warranty. If your appliance is still covered, then it is best to take it back to the store where you bought it, or call the company who made it, before attempting repairs yourself.
Check your state’s regulations surrounding DIY electrical work. In Queensland, it is illegal to repair any plug in appliance. You risk voiding your home insurance and could face hefty fines if you attempt any electrical repair to an appliance.
If you have checked points one and two and want to move on, the next thing to think about is finding comprehensive electrical plans for your appliance. Often these blueprints can be found on the internet and they provide an excellent map of the electrical system.
Once you have the blueprint, make sure you have all the right tools on hand. Soldering irons, voltage meters and needle nosed pliers are invaluable when doing electrical work.
Finally, get yourself a good space where you have a powerful repositionable light and can leave your appliance undisturbed, as electrical work can take some time.

Improving Your Digital TV Reception
If you are having problems with your digital TV services you may improve your reception by doing one or more of the following:
Reposition Your Antenna - often simply raising the height or position of your antenna will improve your reception. Because of the nature of digital TV, where the signal doesn’t fade in quality but drops off quickly, by simply moving your antenna you can vastly improve your reception.
Switching to an Alternate Transmission - you may need to change antennas from a VHF to a UHF to get the full benefits of alternate digital services from the local area translators.
Change Your Cabling and Connectors - frequently the problem is not with your digital TV antenna but with the cabling and connectors, which pick up interference from household appliances. Get low loss, quad shielded coaxial cables and high quality F connectors to minimise the interference.
Rescan your Digital Channels - Depending on the model of set top box or in-built receiver, you may need to rescan your channels every now and then as new services may not be automatically added.
Remember that if you are having trouble you should call a professional digital TV antenna installer as they will provide you with excellent advice and service.

Things To Do Before You Call A Washing Machine Repair Man
If you are unsatisfied with the results your washing machine is providing then you may need to get it repaired, but before you do here are a few tips that may help out.
Often people expect too much of their machine, throwing in clothes with stains from several days ago. If you leave stains and spots for too long before you wash then you are making it extra difficult on your washing machine, so treat them as soon as you can. Use warm water and a stain remover before putting them in the machine.
You should always use more water than you think you need. If the machine is half full of clothes, make sure it is three quarters full of water. If your load doesn’t circulate properly then all your clothing will get twisted and frayed as it is pushed around. It will also put strain on the agitator and the agitator seal, meaning that you may get oil leaking into the machine. Remember, water is cheaper than clothes and washing machines.
Don’t put too much powder in, always follow the recommended dose. Frequently, people who are frustrated with their washing machines will pour more powder in, but the powder has been formulated to work at exact amounts and will often provide worse results if you over concentrate it.
Hopefully these tips will help you out. If not, then it is time to call the washing machine repair man.

How to Install a TV Antenna
Right, you have decided to install a new antenna for your TV. It is a relatively simple job, but before you begin, it needs to be stressed that your safety is paramount and that you need to think through everything before you start. Mounting an antenna generally involves working at height, so if you don’t have a head for heights you may want to hire someone. If you’re good with heights, here goes.
First up, you need to work out what type of antenna and cable you are going to need. Brisbane is about to make the switch to digital TV in 2013, so you are going to want to get TV antenna that will receive this signal. You will also need a low loss coaxial cable to get optimum reception.
Next you need to work out were the closest transmitting tower is. This will help you work out where to position your antenna. Once you have a general idea, it makes sense to get up on the roof with the antenna plugged into the TV and experiment with what position gives you the best reception. When you have figured this out, fix the antenna in place, making sure you use a waterproof seal on the screw holes.
Now all you have to do is secure the cable, plastic ties are good for this, plug it all in and turn the TV on.
