Finally got around to watching Don't Think I've Forgotten about the lost history of rock and roll in Cambodia. It's a moving portrait of life in Phnom Penh before the war that hightlights the burgeoning youth culture tragically cut down by the war. Glad they were able to save and compile the footage - its nice to be reminded of the vibrancy and pulse of a place that is unfairly associated by many foreigners with misery and devestation. There's also a nod to Vann Molyvann and some great shots of the city that got me nostalgic. Above are "Navy A Go Go" by Sinn Sisamouth, who features prominently in the film, as well as "Tokay" by LA's Khmer-led Dengue Fever. Flavors of music from the film and the Phnom Penh sound of the late 60s. Strongly recommended.

Yes this is Floating Points art. I thought it looked cool. And that is enough.

Just a handful of tracks I logged on RA for my December 2014 chart. No order and its not really a mix - just a few interesting sounds that were on repeat last month.
Some tech of the lighter (Round) and heavier (Henry Saiz, Tornado Wallace and Shan) varieties. Typical meanderings through balearia and funk from Osborne, Ptaki, Session Victim and Larry Gus. Just a touch of the new and independent courtesy of Happy Meals and Saint Leidal the 2nd.
Enjoy.

Icy winter mornings demand a gentle emergence from the comforts of sleep.
On days like this, I rouse especially slowly, and my return to full consciousness requires fresh coffee, a few news reports, and some gentle morning music to soundtrack the whole affair. After thirty minutes or so, I'm (relatively) awake and ready to hit the books, or the streets, or whatever else the day has in store.
Here are a few wake-up favorites for the grey winter months ahead.
Bonus tip: If you're in Pittsburgh or Baltimore, you can't miss with the Mexican Chiapas roast from Zeke's Coffee.

It's a chilly and somewhat hungover New Years weekend ahead for those of us on the east coast, and I can think of no better way to ease into 2015 than by settling in with some good films and relaxing music. I'll be breaking into a Christmas gift from this year - Cinematic Orchestra's take on Dziga Vertov's classic soviet art film, Man with a Movie Camera. Ninja Tune released the recut back in 2003, and while I've relied on the soundtrack for study music since then, this will be the first time I get to see the film and music together. Check out a clip of the film, including the track "Awakening (Of a Woman)":

2015 is all about synthesis. The combination of ideas, contradictions, predilections and strategies from unique constituent elements into a greater (one hopes) whole. That is the expectation for FALSE MORALITY in 2015. We will travel. We will learn. We will likely make fools of ourselves. Happy new year.

Love Hivern Discs, but isn't a one-sided 12'' a little wasteful this day in age? Regardless, worthy reissue of "My Own Transition" by Eduardo de la Calle - out 3rd Nov.

Can't ignore the tremendous emotion in this photograph. I wanted to post this with a track that was suitable backing music, but I feel like juxtaposing a relationship-oriented pop song against this would be a bit disrespectful.

Check the Guardian for more information on the protests, their purpose, and government inaction in the face of the kidnapping of 43 student teachers during an earlier protest in September.
Powerful photos capture the student protests in Mexico barely anyone is talking about
While the world has focused its attention on the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, there’s another student movement gaining steam on the other side of the world.
The unfolding protests gripping Mexico began in the small town of Iguala, in the southwest region of Guerrero state, where the disappearance of 43 student teachers on the night of Sept. 26 has sparked outrage amid allegations of collaboration between local police and organized crime.

The Warhol Museum, as part of its 20th anniversary celebration and in tandem with the Brooklyn Academy of Music and UCLA, is hosting a night of previously unscreened Warhol shorts dubbed Exposed: Songs for Unseen Warhol Films. The exhibition will feature live performances of new tracks specially written for the films from some heavy hitters, including Martin Rev (of Suicide), Tom Verlaine (of Television), Dean Wareham (of Galaxie 500), Eleanor Friedberger (of Fiery Furnaces), and the prolific Bradford Cox (of Deerhunter and Atlas Sound).
Tickets are a little on the steep side - around $30 once you count the fees etc. (thanks Ticketmaster) - but with this line-up and the Warhol hosting, it should be worth it. FYI - the Warhol is hosting BUT the exhibition is taking place at the Carnegie Music Hall - NOT at the Warhol. Tickets and full information here.
And now a track from Deerhunter...because they are tangentially related to this post and I enjoy their music.
