POLYRHACHIS GENUS FACTS!!!

(polyrhachis dives)
Commonly called Spiny ants, this genus consists of over 600 species!
Not yet fully understood by researchers due to their massive diversity
Cousins to carpenter ants
No stingers! They rely on an acidipore that sprays formic acid
Apart from their varied appearances, one of the most unique traits of the genus is the wide array of different nesting types they make. From trees to dirt!

Interestingly, those of the Polyrhachis Armata species (my favorite) create nests from debris and larval silk much like the more well known Weaver Ants!

Another trait shared with Weaver ants is their lack of metapleural gland, which is used to produce antibiotics against parasites and other hazards. This is speculated to be because of their arboreal lifestyle, which has less pressure from ground parasites.
Here's some particularly cool polyrhachis ants!

polyrhachis armata

polyrhachis demangei

Polyrhachis saevissima

polyrhachis cyaniventris

polyrhachis abdominalis

polyrhachis bihamata

polyrhachis thrinax
If you know anymore about them please let me know, id love to hear it!!! 🐜
