Another gem from my latest ROM visit that filled me with immeasurable glee:

Look at that little owl!! He's so goofy and cute and so dear to me and so so very clearly a LITTLE OWL (Athene Noctua) which is, of course, the species of owl that represents Athena
Tumblr media
Look at how small that little guy is:

Athena holding a helmet and a spear, with an owl. Attributed to the Brygos Painter (c. 490–480 BC). The Metropolitan Museum of Art. And, look at these incredible further examples cute little owls in pottery:

Armed owl. Attic red-figure Anthesteria oinochoe, ca. 410–390 BC

Skyphos with Owl between two branches of olive wood. Attic red-figure pottery. Archaeological National Museum of Spain.

Attic red-figure kylix, owl between two olive branches. Found in the Mengíbar Necropolis. Archaeological National Museum of Spain.
Tumblr media
Owl skyphos. From Most na SočI, end of the 5th century BC. Tolmin Museum.

Owl skyphos. Attic, mid-5th century BCE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Tumblr media
Terracotta rim fragment of a kylix. Attic, dating 480–470 BCE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I just wanted to share these because they also always make me smile. One of my favourite things about going to the museum has always been looking at sculptures and pottery.

sorry to be brave on the internet but I think food labels should list every single ingredient and that there should be harsher penalties for mislabeling and deceptive labeling

As [Mikoyan] declared in a January 1936 speech: “I am a great supporter of the production of ice cream. Certain comrades believe to this day that ice cream is merely a children’s treat, and is of no use to grown-ups.” At this point Mikhail Kalinin, who was in attendance, exclaimed, “But everyone loves ice cream!” Mikoyan replied, “They love it, but some shun it out of hypocrisy, because they believe it’s just for kids. The production of ice cream needs to be expanded as much as possible. I am lobbying for ice cream, because it is a very delicious and nourishing food.”

I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.
I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."

Since January, while I haven’t been able to handle listening to NPR, I have taken to listening to my local college radio station during my commute. I love it.
College DJs play all the weird, obscure, niche music. I have discovered more new-to-me music in the last two months than I have in years.
As I hit middle age, I feel like it’s important not to let myself just slide into nostalgia, only listening to the same familiar music over and over. Can’t let my brain ossify. Sometimes it’s good for me to listen to experimental electronic music on my commute home, you know? Gotta force myself to have new experiences, and this one is so easy and low-stakes.
Won’t doxx myself by saying what station it is. But if you have that kind of college radio station within FM range, where the students DJ and are allowed to curate their own sets, I can highly recommend it.
(Edit: I should clarify that my car is too old to have any kind of Bluetooth capability, or even an aux cord. So, FM radio it is.)
