I have feelings on this

Because I heavily headcanon than Phyllis is mixed race.

Granted, a character doesn't have to be POC just because their VA is, but I want Phyllis to be because I love her as a character and it kinda fills in some of the gaps that her backstory has. Out of all 3 of the Prime Assets, we know about Phyllis's personal life the least.

And as someone who is mixed themself, I like to project onto characters. I also like to overanalyze every single little thing about this woman because I've been obsessed with her since her release, so let's get into it!

In her origin comic, Clyde Perry investigates Phyllis's background. All he says about her mother is that she's "out of the picture". Not dead, but gone. Like no one knew who she was, or they didn't care who she was.

I have the personal theory that Phyllis's mother was a woman of color while Dr. A. Futterman (the real one) was a white man. And interracial relationships, ESPECIALLY involving white people, were illegal until 1967.

Now, how they got together is up in the air. But I have a feeling Futterman wasn't the type for romance (I have SO MUCH to say on theories regarding how A. Futterman was as a person but thats for another ramble. Maybe). I headcanon he knocked up his dental assistant (consenting or not) and she gave birth to Phyllis only to dump her onto his doorstep and leave, telling him that the baby was his problem now.

Perry also mentions that Phyllis had a very lonely childhood. Now, any child, regardless of any race, can be ostracized by their peers, but it would make sense that a mixed child in the 1920s (assuming Phyllis is somewhere in her late 40s-early 50s) who is motherless would be shunned a little more purposefully (Her voiceline about children never looking for her kills me 😭)

Now, regarding what happened after her arrest in regards to her skin. Historically, people of color have been subjected to human testing, especially incarcerated people of color. The most notable was the testing of Retinol throughout 1951 to 1974.

And where were these tests taking place?

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Phyllis's hometown.

Red Barrels hasn't shied away from the topic of racism in regards to what people of color had to go through during the mid century, so I have a strong suspicion that Phyllis's own experience is meant to reference those trials in history.

And it would bring a disturbing yet psychologically intriguing answer as to why Phyllis's face mask is snow white. Perhaps Murkoff put it on her in order to erase her identity, or maybe she put it on herself, distraught that she was seen as lesser due to the fact she wasn't white enough.

We don't know for sure, but that's what I personally have rattling around in my head. Phyllis Futterman is a book I could keep on reading and never get bored, and I really hope she's able to get more voicelines that reveal more about her, please Red Barrels I'll do anything!

Wait genuine question, is mother gooseberry/phyllis meant to be black?

She’s voiced by a black woman, and appears to have textured hair. It’s really tough to tell because we only have one picture of her prior to experimentation, and it’s not great.
