I will die on the hill that Jago is the tired lady at the farmer's market, a large coffee in one hand and the leashes for her two Chihuahuas in the other. The first Chihuahua is ridiculously tiny and shakes uncontrollably due to high anxiety. The shaking - and anxiety - never leave. It just waxes and wanes like the moon. The other Chihuahua is a perfect canine citizen until he smells someone suss; then he seems to grow three sizes, reveals rows of teeth the likes of which no animal of that size should possess, and lets out a hair raising, shrieking battle cry that has been known to scare literal soldiers. The dogs are pretty quiet, until they get to scheming together...
Then everybody is doomed.

Bren and Jago's first night together is absolutely wild. It starts with Jago's partner having a mini meltdown over the fact the world may literally be ending but these two can't get their shit together. So half jokingly, half out of frustration he manuevers the situation so they have to talk it out, have to make a move.
In an epic, earthshaking thunderstorm.
And then Cherryh writes a tasteful, touching scene of intimacy followed by these two crazy goobers running naked out into the driving rain and then cuddling in their sleeping bag.
The next morning Banichi follows them around, teasing them mercilessly. Bren is turning various shades of red while Jago jokingly mulls over whether killing Banichi would be patricide or justified homicide.
The whole thing is fluffy, angsty comedy gold.

Such a great trilogy. Human marine-equivalent soldier chooses (by necessity) to throw his lot in with the once-enemy mri after betrayal from the mri's former employers, who are humans' allies. Immersed in the culture and language with no word for mercy as humans mean it, Duncan becomes something else. His fate and that of the last of the mri are linked inexorably.

Regul from the Faded Sun Trilogy. Hard to believe these assholes could be capable of much of anything.
Credit to Aspiedragon on Imgur (not sure if it's OC or not). I love the Faded Sun trilogy so much, if it was more recent I think more people would be into it

Cherryh stories are one of two things. Either
There is no reason to believe that the cultures, customs, and practices that have lasted so little time here will be replicated beyond Earth by either humans or aliens. All the same humankind is capable of understanding, cooperation, and mutual interest with all forms of life. We will change, we will grow together with our extra terrestrial friends, and we will be good, even as we become aliens to the rest of humankind.
OR
Two bitches with undiagnosed autism meet someone like themselves for the first time and devote the rest of their life to protecting each other

Honesty," Machigi drawled in his thickest Marid accent, "is a truly frightening power. He has it. Do you dare, Giti-sa? Do you dare deal with a man who will not lie to you? He will tell the truth to you, and he will tell it to me, and to Lord Bregani and to the aiji-dowager. So get your story straight and be very honest in that list-making. You would not want to leave something out that could come back to haunt you.

Defiance completely changed my understanding of Unit Seniors and Bren's ashid as a whole. What do you mean Bren was in constant fear that Cenedi would either lose his mind or die if Illisidi died!? That it's implied that this is standard for Unit Seniors?
Because here's the thing. In the first book, when Bren's ashid were forced to hand him over to Cenedi... was Banichi the Unit Senior yet? Was he Bren's sworn protector yet? His ride or legit die? Because if so, Jago stood to lose both Bren and her father that night. She has a completely different mindset toward that then humans, of course. But it would still be a traumatic event in her life either way, and puts her betrayal speech to Bren in a whole new light. One slip, one wrong move, and she could have lost whole chunks of her world.
And if Bren dies before his ashid, will they be digging a grave for two? It's mind boggling to consider, really.

I often headcanon Haikuti as Banichi's ex. It makes the whole situation just that much more twisted, and adds another layer of the series' amazing grim humor. Two of our main cast, already attached at the hip, could bond further over having psycho exes.
The entire situation is just so beautifully messed up. Banichi is hyperventilating into a paper bag because he just had to shoot his ex and his entire worldview exploded into a thousand splinters of broken glass; his instincts demanded he throw himself between his Principle and the threat, but when the time came he just... didn't. He's loaded to the gills on painkillers, side throbbing in tandem to his heart beat, genuinely fearing he has quite literally lost his mind.
Meanwhile Bren's having one of his classic, swooning Victorian maiden meltdowns over one of his ashid getting hurt. But this time... it's bad. Worse then Jago's shoulder was when they went to confront Machigi. Stitches really aren't good enough. But they don't have time to rest. Don't even really have time to think. Just feel and breath raggedly and hope to whatever is out there that their little association makes it out alive in an acceptable number of pieces.
And then they almost don't.
And Bren's curled up on the dias steps, watching dried blood flake off his hands as someone he loves as deeply as any human could love is clinging to life by a fraying thread.
Absolute poetry.
