Just Another Analysis of Steven’s Trauma, and How That Led to Behavior Changes:
Do you guys ever think about Steven sticking up for Peridot and wanting to give her a chance to change when nobody else did? He did the same for Lapis and Bismuth, even after they tried to kill him. He did the same for Eyeball, and for the first time it backfired, leading to him nearly being stranded in space forever. He befriended and worked with the Diamonds to restore peace and create a new order, after they imprisoned him and put him through horrible things (especially White).
In the main series, he was always relentlessly, recklessly compassionate. He was willing to bear his entire heart to every enemy.
To a degree, this is admirable. Steven accomplished things no gem ever could because of this.
However, going back and re-watching the series, it’s obvious that Steven repressing his issues and denying his own feelings has been a habit he’s developed over a long period of time. It was a coping skill he utilized more and more as the problems, responsibilities, and traumas he’s faced became too complicated to solve with a few musical numbers.
I’ve been on team “this boy needs therapy” for a long time now, but especially after the episode “Bluebird.” Future Steven never let down his guard with Bluebird. There was no attempting to sing with her or to teach her the wonders of the earth like he did with Peri. He was constantly on edge, always trying to talk himself down into thinking she wasn’t about to murder everyone. He gave her a chance to change in order to stick to the principles he still held, but his heart was never really open to trusting her. And imagine how damaging it must have been to this child clearly dealing with symptoms of trauma when it turned out his mistrust of her was justified.
Let’s break down some of the many PTSD symptoms Steven has exhibited:
1. Nightmares/flashbacks: None showed yet in SUF, but he had more than his fair share in the main series. Think about the dream with him throwing up Rose’s hair.
2. Avoidance of reminders of the trauma: He avoids any reminders of Rose, especially by hiding her painting- which has apparently been bothering him at least since “Storm in the Room” back in season 4. This has progressed to him losing control of his powers when new things about Pink are even mentioned. Just as recently as the movie, he was able to at least talk to Spinel about what Pink did, but with Volley (a completely friendly gem who wasn’t trying to kill his entire planet), he couldn’t even hear a word of it without exploding. The time skip between the movie and SUF is a few months at the most, implying that Steven is decompensating at an alarming rate. In psychology terms, decompensation is defined as a worsening of symptoms, an inability to cope with stress and change, and difficulty with normal life situations.
3. Irritability, agitation, heightened arousal, hypervigilance: Just the entire episode of “Bluebird.” Also, in “Little Homeschool” Steven goes up to help Jasper and loses his crap when she squashes a bug. That escalated pretty quickly considering Steven’s prior baseline for being patient with others. We’ve never seen Steven get that mad at her even when she was actively trying to kill him.
4. Emotional detachment: Steven used to be so skilled at getting others to be honest with their feelings, but the reason he’s “lost touch” with that is because he no longer knows how to be honest with his own. Even his most earnest attempts to help now often seem superficial, inconsiderate, manic, and rushed. This was demonstrated especially in the episode “Guidance,” in which Steven was made aware of this problem, but just because he’s aware of it does not know he’s able to change his behavior immediately. He demonstrated the same detachment later in “Volleyball.” He has moments where he allows himself to be emotionally vulnerable, like when he admitted to the Rose Quartzes that he’s “not fine,” but later in “A Very Special Episode” he stresses that he fine although he’s clearly not (if we can include that episode as canon, that is). Recovery from ingrained behaviors like being emotionally closed off is not as linear or simple as stopping after you intellectually understand them, or learning your lesson once and for all in a single episode. Changing behaviors is more often a day to day struggle, and requires learning over and over again. Backsliding is normal, and doesn’t mean you’re not making overall progress.
5. Unwanted thoughts/feelings: Steven visibly shuts his eyes and blocks his ears to drive away unwanted thoughts. Even back in Garnet’s wedding, the chipper lyrics to the song are “There’s an awful lot of awful things we could be thinking of, but for just one day let’s only think about love.” Kind of has a dark tone in hindsight.
6. Mistrust or severe anxiety: Again, the entire episode of Bluebird, ok?
7. Self-destructive behavior: No indications of this at the time (aside from his lack of healthy personal boundaries), but if Steven’s corruption is as eminent as the fandom thinks it is, there will be soon.
8. Insomnia: Steven is often animated with bags under his eyes, and mentions to the Quartzes that he gets up pretty early.
9. Direct exposure to a traumatic event or set of events: Steven has had multiple attempts on his life. He has been abducted at least 4 times (by Jasper, Aquamarine, at the Zoo, and even one time by Ronaldo). He also witnessed his father get abducted and blamed himself. Him and his best friend were prisoners on a hostile alien planet for long enough that they were very hungry and dehydrated upon release. He has experienced identity issues due to almost everyone he knows thinking he was his mom at some point. He went from thinking his mom was a perfect, impossible ideal to live up to, to thinking she was a murderer, to learning she was a Diamond with a whole new set of messes to clean up he never anticipated.

“Let us heal and grow “You won’t be alone, we’re unstoppable.”
Do you like a kind half human, half gem hybrid that honestly needs some freakin’ therapy? Maybe his fusion with Pearl, forming Rainbow Quartz 2.0? Perhaps an artist in Blue Diamond’s Pearl? Or the icy duo that is Larimar and Snowflake Obsidian?
Then this might be the blog for you!

Me: * just out here with a multi fandom multi muse *
Anxiety: Um, don’t you think it’d be better for followers to be able to pick which muses they want to follow instead of being subjected to muses they don’t want to see when the muses they followed for inevitably go on hiatus or get dropped?
Me: ...good point. * makes a hub blog that’s...SUPPOSED to be multi fandom and sides for it *
Anxiety: Wait, how are they gonna know which blogs to follow? Also that’s too many blogs now and what if you really can’t commit to these new blogs and they all die a week later because people aren’t interested in the muses you truly want to write and then there’s the whole thing about you being fairly reclu-
Me: * pulling eyelids down and groaning all the while these thoughts are going on * I just wanted a fun time...

What I mean when I say I like a villain:
I like their story
I like their motivations
I like their skills/powers
I like their intelligence
I like their quotes
I find them interesting
I like their relationship with other character(s)
What I definitely don’t mean when I say I like a villain:
“They’re just misunderstood”
I’m defending every single one of their actions and I think they’re 100% innocent
I’m a dumbass who doesn’t know that they’re a villain
