AN ACCURATE ARGUMENT OF WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH FANTASTIC CHILDREN BY A NONBIASED NORMAL PERSON, I HAVEN’T BEEN SHOUTING ABOUT THIS SERIES FOR AN HOUR I DON’T EVEN LIKE THIS SHOW REALLY
I LOVE THIS SERIES. I love, love, love it with the adoration I usually save for the queen’s thief series or “candle in a bottle” by carole ives gilman and I’m not kidding that it was formative to my inclinations in media beyond belief. BUT NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD OF IT.
Fantastic Children is a 2004 nonchronological mystery drama that weaves together characters and plot threads across time to converge into a heartbreaking climax. Just to mention three of them: the mystery of the white haired unearthly Befort Children who appear at various points throughout history and then disappear leaving only dead bodies. A detective, Bob Cooks, and a reporter, Alice, investigate the mysterious GED Organization involved in the disappearance of American test pilots. Meanwhile across the globe, a 12 year old boy named Tohma is drawn to young orphan Helga on one of her repeated attempts to run away from her orphanage to look for a place she sees in her dreams.
I’ve got to admit – it’s extremely low budget series made in an older style. The opening is hilariously awkward. They use the same cello piece for countless different scenes and you might get tired of seeing the same motion shots over and over. Opinions over the character designs versus a more conventional style has actually caused a fight at my house. But all of this aside, the storytelling is why this one of my favourite anime series of all time. It is actually masterful. Fantastic Children is about what it means to be human, about accepting your past, betrayal and atonement, the limits of science, but mostly about love in all forms and the awful/beautiful things people will do for it. You will get attached to the tragedy of the Befort Children. You will probably cry. I’ve seen this show all the way through upwards of five times and individual episodes more than that and I still cry every time.
There are only 26 episodes which you can find online in both dub or sub in a variety of places. In my opinion, going in without ANY knowledge is the best way for new people to watch but the fanmade trailer I attached above is a good little preview if you need more convincing. IT’S A REALLY GOOD SHOW YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY SOME TIME.
