[TRIVIA] The Brow Beat: The Story Behind “Suiren” (Lyrics Written by Sato Ryuji)

Ryuji wrote the song “Suiren” (“Water Lily”) based on the memory of the death of his friend in high school who committed suicide.

At one point during The Brow Beat’s Fukuoka performance, the backing track for the song without vocals was played during the live, and the fans sang the chorus of the song.

Hearing this, Ryuji, apparently, became emotionally overwhelmed and slightly teary-eyed. Without using his mic, he told the fans,

“Thank you.”

During The Brow Beat’s talk-live event in Akihabara, Tokyo, he talked a bit more about the song and the memories that it contained.

“It’s about my friend who died. I, the day before he died, together with him, the two of us, came to Akihabara to have fun. That’s why, the fact that I’ve come here again today, I do feel it.”

And, when he was asked when was the most recent time that he had come to Akihabara prior to the talk-live event and what did he do,

Ryuji: I accidentally said the answer just now. When I was in high school, with my friend.

MC: What did you do?

Ryuji: Eh, what was it [that we did]… We took purikura [1]! And then… Games. We played “Taiko no Tatsujin” [2] and [some] fighting games.

Which means that, prior to going back there for The Brow Beat, the last time he ever set foot in Akihabara was that day on the eve of his friend’s suicide.
