In my environment, I immediately thought of sneakers as an example of an item which exhibits a “Romantic” approach. Branding and labeling can mean more to people than the design. Sneakers with branding are what catch people’s eyes and act as more promotion for the brand. As mentioned in the 3/27 lecture video, a lot of it has to do with “not just who are, but who we want to be”. Sneakers act as a status symbol, and the branding relates to that.

This framed advertisement is influenced by the baroque style. In the image, which is a promotion for Godey’s Fashions for July 1871, there is a whimsical nature to the dresses. Also, another element of the baroque style is included, natural, and that influence. This gold frame’s color and textured detail are not as ornate as those in a Newport mansion but still are a nod to the style. I also chose this piece because it is an example of the “odd fascination” of this period that Dr. Aspleund discussed in the Monday 3/25 video lecture. I found this artwork at an antique store in my town, and it being there exemplifies its place in people’s interests.

How does your cultural identification rely on design? My cultural identification affects what a gravitate towards in my environment. I am an American teenager living in New England and a part of Generation Y. These social groups propel me to have certain interests and tastes.
What designed products do you use or wear that make you feel as if you belong to a specific group, nation, or subculture? In regard to designed products, my Ugg boots, iPhone, and high waisted jeans definitely make me feel as if I belong to a specific group. The group can be referred to as trendy or following what is popular.
What are the significant elements that allow this identification? Elements of my environment allow this identification. My peers, my family and the content in which I view have helped me to form this identification. Those factors also contribute to what designed products I enjoy.

• What might be gained, lost in the transition from one dimension to another?
This image utilizes space and volume. David LaChapelle who photographed this album cover creates elaborate to create his images. In transitioning to 3d the presentation would definitely be immersive and evoke even more of the carnival theme. This 2d image is layered and conveys depth, a 3-d model would heightened that.
• What would we need to be careful about in illustration, modeling, construction about that transition?
We would need to be careful about translating the correct proportions and not changing the overall theme of the design.
• What might be missing in a sketch of it and how might a media choice help?
A sketch of this would lack the color and depth. The mix of photography and graphic design is the image fosters its complexity through space and motion.

Assignment for Wednesday, 2/6
An object I would consider to be good design is the ottoman in my room. Inspiration for this piece definitely stems from the idea of storage solutions, and stowing possessions away. I would communicate what is especially important about the design to the person that had to make it by explaining limited storage options in bedrooms, and consumers need for places to put things. I would describe it as a styled box to store items, and also a seating option. In regard to the inherent constraints is that this piece is designed to be a seat and storage box. Imposed constraints are the grey color, the textured fabric, tufted detail, and wooden legs.

Assignment for Monday, 2/4
The newer models of the Apple iPhone only have a lightning port now, which causes users of wired headphones to use an adapter or go out and purchase wireless headphones. The problem is that you cannot charge your phone and listen to music at once. Another action that was common among users was charging your phone while playing music through an AUX cord in the car. People have moved to buying wireless chargers and headphones to mitigate this issue but buying more expensive devices should not have to be the solution.
I would inspire myself and others to tackle this problem at hand by emphasizing ease of use. iPhones have become an extension of its users so making it more complicated to use and with more accessories I feel only benefits aesthetics not its function. In reference to the readings and videos, I would determine a solution by conceptualizing my improved design. I would focus especially on functionality and usability. I would consider what would make the design look aesthetically minimal but offer function. Then after considering my audience I would start with “S” in the SCAMPER method. My idea would be to substitute the single lightening port for a headphone jack and port duo piece. This piece would be made of silicone and be more durable to easier for cords to be plugged in.
