You see, I like mentally spinning a wheel to pick two characters to lock in a jar to see what happens. The victims of this exercise this time were Vergil and Nina Lowell.

And it's... a surprisingly fun duo??? There might actually be something of substance here. Think with me; these are two absentee parents (for different reasons, but different reasoning doesn't change the impact it had on Nero or Patty), given her family history I can see Nina knowing a lot about the occult, and that's definitely something Vergil would enjoy. They can easily bond over failing their children and obscure spells.

Vergil has no friends—at all. This would actually be good for him. And Nina's life seemed like a lonely one during the anime. Present day she probably has a better life in that sense, but those lingering feelings aren't something you can 100% shake off, and that's a lived experience of hers, even if it's in the past. They can find common ground, and Nina seems like a more subdued woman, a rarity in Dante's acquaintances that Vergil would appreciate.

But also, Nina can trigger Vergil's family complex because she physically reminds him of Eva, but Nina also exhibits some of Dante's traits; the drinking, the self-isolation, the "people need to stay away from me or they'll get hurt" attitude. The way she's introduced in the anime feels very Dante-coded, and there's comfort in familiarity for Vergil here.

I think Nina's similarities to Dante would also make interactions between those two very interesting and worth exploring, but this post isn't about them.

A platonic exploration of them can be fun, but if we wanna do a more traditionally shippy read of it, that is also fun. And I'm not one to leave a stone unturned when it comes to trying out character dynamics. I don't think they'd be a proper couple, something truly romantic. They wouldn't fall in love. But I do think their friendship could involve some occasional benefits after a few glasses of wine and occult research.

It feels like something they'd partake in to relieve the tension, to cope. Vergil's done a lot of questionable things, he's missed out on a lot. Settling into a human way of life isn't easy, there's no manual for that. And some of it Nina would understand. She got her daughter back, she built a good relationship with her. But all the years of Patty's life that she missed, those still haunt her. It's left up in the air, but we can gather that people she cared for died around her because of Alan's Tear. Being unwilling to lose any more was why she left Patty behind. It was the right thing to do, but it doesn't mean it didn't hurt then. And it still does now.

The sex between them feels more like a shared handshake, a symbolic understanding of each other than any attempt at romance and they both know this. It's something surprisingly easy. You'd think it would definitely turn messy, such an arrangement. But it doesn't. It just is.

Other fun things that can be spun out of this:

Patty is all for it, let her mom have fun and get some, she's not jealous or worried. She does threaten Vergil once in the beginning about never breaking her mom's heart, a formality. She won't need to ever make good on that threat, but she means every word. Vergil is amused if a little annoyed.

Patty would unabashedly use "Your brother/ uncle is banging my mom." as a bargaining chip against Dante and Nero, or to simply get a rise out of them. It entertains her.

Patty is definitely joking about inbred royal family trees being tumbleweeds. Because like, Nero is her pseudo-cousin, while Dante is her pseudo-father. Nina and Vergil having a Thing™ also makes Vergil into her pseudo-father as well as uncle. Nero's face of abject horror as she jokes that they are siblings now makes Dante laugh for a week. He'll just randomly laugh in the middle of the day because he remembered Nero's face.

Like, she's having the time of her life here, meanwhile Nero is just staring into the distance because he went from no family, to this (he wouldn't change a thing).

I just really really love putting characters together and try and work out what would happen. This is made especially interesting with characters that have never met at all. The possibilities are truly endless.

I haven’t had much time to celebrate (I don’t even have potatoes in the house! I am determined to acquire them and produce latkes!) but it was fun to put some color into the comic I drew last year (part 1, part 2) inspired by these awesome prompts. Even if the art’s a bit shit it still makes me giggle

But isn't it the point of a whole genre of games to learn the pattern of the enemies over multiple fights before being able to bet them?

I haven't played them, nor am I particulary good at video games, but I had fun doing it, and from what I've seen I feel like this is the case for a lot of players

I had the same issue when i posted a negative review of Clair Obscur. I really loved the storytelling of the game but the actual gameplay felt unpolished and overly difficult for no reason besides gating me out of the story which was the good part. I'm a big fan of Bayonetta and Hades so I'm no alien to dodge mechcanics but this wasn't it.

I got clowned on soooo hard. There were 200 replies to my post saying all sorts of terrible things about me.

I had the same issue when i posted a negative review of Clair Obscur.
