Vol II of The End and The Death does actually start on Ulthwe, with a Masque of the Dance Without End performing a dance that Eldrad at first confuses for the fall of the Eldar, but a dracon tells him it's a different one, not about THEIR fall, but the Imperium's, and when they ask the Solitaire what role they're playing, they say "The Dark King".

Turns out Eldrad KNEW about Horus' betrayal and tried to warn the Imperium, but unfortunately, the only person he managed to get in contact with was an already demon-possessed Fulgrim.

There is also an entire subplot about John Grammaticus, "Alpharius" and Ollanius Persson leading a little merry band of adventurers to the Imperial Palace to help stop Horus and/ or control chaos, somehow.. And they're sent by a group of various xenos, and specifically one Eldar Farseer, that have formed to Do Something about chaos.

Horus Heresy AU where the whole thing is told from the perspectives of Eldar, Ork, and other Xeno historians/skalds trying to figure out what the fuck happened.

Craftworld Farseers trying to divine what happened, Harlequin and Drukari interrogating captured Marines and the like, Orks bullying bound Demons for information, Necrons doing research (Trazyn....), Tau hacking old archives, that sort of thing.
