INVISIBLE HITS: Buzz-Building Tapes That Set the Stage for an Iconic Debut
Another Invisible Hits column is LIVE over on Pitchfork. Holy moly. This one builds off of the recent, long-overdue official release of Liz Phair’s Girly-Sound Tapes, digging into some of early recordings by the VU, Television, Pavement and Belle and Sebastian. It’s a good time, hopefully.
I’ll use this opportunity to give a shout-out to editor Mark Richardson who was kind enough to bring me onboard the good ship Pitchfork back in early 2014. Without getting all personal, that time was not suuuuuuper great for me, and the fact that he thought I was good enough to write for the site meant a lot. Mark is moving on to other projects soon, but he’s definitely built something special over the years. People love to talk shit about Pitchfork (sometimes with good reason) but I’m not sure there’s another publication that covers such a wide range of music and employs such a wide range of great writers. So there!

Yung Wu - Maxwell’s, Hoboken, New Jersey, August 9, 1989
Heyo, there’s a long-overdue reissue of Yung Wu’s classic Shore Leave coming your way soon. Good news for everyone! The LP is a necessary addition to your Feelies collection (as the pic above suggests, the band is The Good Earth-era lineup with Dave Weckerman up front, plus Speed the Plough’s John Baumgartner). There aren’t a whole lot of Yung Wu live tapes out there — the band hasn’t really played that many shows over the years. But you wouldn’t really know it from this very tight Maxwell’s gig from the summer of ‘89, which features Shore Leave in its entirety, plus a few tasty extras, including an excellent rendition of Tom Verlaine’s “Kingdom Come.” Better than Bowie! Oh and hey – I just saw that the McKenzie Tapes site has a Yung Wu show from 1987 up now. Wu-hoo!

The Ballad of Red Buckets
Via tapewrecks, a great, in-depth profile (with a few mp3s) of this early 80s Philadelphia band, who collaborated with various Feelies and whose poignant epitaph was written by Yo La Tengo on their Electr-O-Pura LP. The music (which is new to me) sounds great, makes me think if Nikki Sudden had fronted the Kendra Smith-era Dream Syndicate. You know what I’m saying. As good as the mp3s are, the descriptions of the later, unreleased material are even more interesting: “It was like Television playing with Richard Thompson,” says drummer Stan Demeski. So basically this blog’s dream band?
