"i think i'll stay, just in case you're thinking of doing something crazy." robin to whitney
"wow, rude." whitney's brow furrows, holding the other's gaze with a judging look in her eyes. she knows robin means well - she guesses, anyway. robin seems to fit right into the virtous superhero stereotype - but it does come off as her not trusting her. whitney's latest attempt at living up to her newly assigned title and stopping a shooter in the town square ended up with a few more casualties and property damage than she had originally anticipated... but she was trying to help, to her credit. even if, deep down, she knew she had no business being a hero.
"i'm not gonna run out and break stuff or hurt people, you know?" she tries to sound more dramatically offended than hurt, her wild gesturing intended as a smokescreen. "i'm still getting the hang of these powers -- it's easier for you. you have your suit to help you." she has an inkling that robin made the suit, or maybe it was her father, but either way, their situations couldn't quite compare. robin didn't wake up one day with abilities she didn't ask for or a whole town looking up to her and expecting her to be a hero. she'd only let them down in the end; maybe robin was just getting ahead of the game on that front, seeing her for the liability she really was.
whitney lets out a deep sigh and walks over to the kitchenette, already reaching for the cupboards in a familiar motion. "well, i'm getting a drink. i don't think i can listen to you lecture me while i'm sober." she takes out two glasses, presenting them to robin with a semi-inviting look. "if you're so hellbent on staying and babysitting, do you want one too? or does that go against superhero code or something?"

" .. you brought- back? " points at gus - to yelena from ahmya ( this isn't a meme but ur tags inspired me and i just imagine yelena brings gus every time ahmya's in the building from then on out. )
"yes," yelena replies nonchalantly, adjusting gus in her hold. he's stiff as a board, visibly uncomfortable, but not moving an inch this time - not hiding either, which leads yelena to believe her bribing earlier had been successful. gus had enough nuts and kiwi to last him the whole week.
"it can be a..." she gestures vaguely, searching for the word. "playdate. sometimes we're out on missions and gus has to stay behind, so... it would be nice if you guys became friends."

"i knew it. i'm dead." maddy to whitney
"okay, now you're just being dramatic." whitney holds up a hand as if to physically stop what she imagines is maddy's oncoming meltdown. from their short time together, whitney likes to think she's learned to read the other pretty well; she was wired so tight, it was a miracle she hadn't blown up completely already.
"give me that." she snatches maddy's phone from her hand to check out the news article that had her so distressed. it features a picture of them outside of maddy's home, just under a lying, attention-grabbing title. MAYOR OF HERRING HARBOR SPOTTED WITH SUPERHERO TITANIA, followed by an equally melodramatic caption about the possibility of a forbidden romance or maddy abusing her mayoral power, now that she had someone with super strength in her repertoire.
whoever took the picture and wrote the article failed to realize the two had been arguing at the time, with whitney having followed maddy in an attempt to get more answers about their shared condition.
"this is what's gotten you in a tizzy?" she rolls her eyes. "you're not used to news reports saying bad things about you, huh?" whitney, on the other hand, has had her name in the tabloids for as long as she can remember - not unwarranted, to their credit; she's certainly been involved in a scandal or two back in her days in the limelight. she supposes it's different for maddy, who values her image most of all. she seemed like wouldn't even be caught not saying please and thank you to someone. "okay, this is just speculation," whitney continues, forcing herself to sound more sympathetic this time. "people write shit about celebrities all the time. half of it is fake, just to get the public's attention. they'll forget all about this in a few days, when the next big thing blows up."
she sighs, handing maddy back her phone. "if it bothers you so much, you can just say we were talking about-- i don't know, reducing crime in town?" whitney shrugs. "generic mayor stuff. i'm sure you can come up with something."

“i'm sorry for misleading you.” (Natasha to Yelena)
@musingmemories | things my friends's muses have said meme | accepting
"not cool, natasha." she smacks her sister's arm once she's pushed herself off the ground, a deep pout frown on her features. "you could've just told me about the plan. i would've helped." did natasha really think she'd mess it up or slow her down? maybe she'd always see yelena as the little sister, running behind her, never quite catching up. that had been true at one point in their lives -- but yelena was all grown now, an assassin in her own right, even if she never chose that life for herself.
"you're a terrible team player," she throws natasha another jab, still butthurt over not being filled in. "i have no idea how you worked with the avengers for so long."
#musingmemories#( ic ask ; yelena belova )#i could've made this even angstier but i refuse#let the sisters bicker abt some mission they're working on together!!

@apaise ( continued )
being reunited with charming was a surprise on its own -- only for her old friend to be introduced under a new name too. no trace of elinor's surprise made its way to her features, years of practice when it came to keeping her emotions in check. she would have to ask charming all about it later, when there was no unwanted company around to eavesdrop.
she navigates the rest of pleasant conversation as expertly as ever. it's a bore and she's counting the minutes until she can meet charming, desperate for an honest conversation at last. elinor's been wearing this mask for so long, sometimes she's not entirely sure what's real or fabricated.
when elinor is finally rid of the royals chatting her up, she makes for the gardens, trusting charming will find her soon enough. she's shamelessly enjoying the offered drinks and food, letting some of her decorum slip in the servants' presence, when charming finally comes into view. she gets rid of the help as swiftly as elinor expected from her; it seemed she was still her old self deep down.
the immediate complaining is yet another indicator of it. the slightest of smiles appears on elinor's face, admittedly a little amused by the other's theatrics - she promptly hides it behind her glass, though, going for a convenient sip.
"sounds terrible," she deadpans, making no effort to try to sound compassionate. charming hadn't exactly extended the same sympathy to elinor, and she wasn't nearly as dramatic about it. "why are you pretending, exactly?" elinor quirks a brow as she watches charming eat, seemingly unbothered by her current predicament. "last i heard, you were first in the running to marry princess fiona... so what's all this shrek business now?"

new muse: whitney donovan (reluctant hero oc)
loosely set in the dc universe but applicable to any superhero/slice of life verse
born to an actress and a film director, she grew up rich and spoiled
had a fleeting and not very notable career as a b-grade actress. she ended up quietly quitting and living off her parents' money and brand deals
one night, she and her parents get caught in a thunderstorm and end up in a crash after their car is hit by lightning. the parents don't survive. whitney herself is on the verge of death, and only survives due to a side effect of the storm - which was actually caused by a particle accelerator (i know the cw pulled that out of their ass in the flash, but let's roll with it <3)
whitney wakes up with enhanced speed and strength, powers which she absolutely does not want
with her parents gone, she has no source of income anymore, and no skills fit for the real world, so she has to pick up odd jobs to stay afloat. primarily works at a corner store near her shitty apartment
has a bury-head-in-sand approach to her powers and wants nothing to do with them. eventually she saves a few people from being robbed at the store; they film everything and put her on blast on socials, making it impossible to keep her newfound anonymity and bringing pressure to become a superhero
at one point, she does try her hand at it but she's honestly not great and does more harm than good, but she has good intentions deep down
lowkey wishes she died in the crash bc she never asked for this second chance at life and doesn't think herself fit to be a hero
bi and afraid terrible with long-term relationships, prefers to date around instead
when she eventually does become a proper hero (still very reluctantly), the public dubs her titania. she tries very hard to discourage this and go back to her normal life, but to no avail

She remained in silence at Kate's stammering, watching her go from bewilderment to acceptance in a matter of seconds - what was the big deal? It was by all means a good plan; it would help them blend in and keep any unwanted attention off them. Though in hindsight... perhaps Yelena hadn't considered that it could make the other uncomfortable. Despite her experience working in the field, she was more used to strategic, silent kills -- not so much the whole undercover business.
Kate didn't allude to any discomfort, though, so Yelena trusted she'd speak up if needed. "That's smart." She nodded to her suggestion. It'd be best to get their stories straight in case anyone asked - even if improvising was also, admittedly, a little fun.
"I think that's a pretty cool love at first sight scenario." Yelena shrugged. "But I guess we have to change it." Most people would have questions about the arrow and the trying to kill each other business. A shame. "How do regular people meet a significant other...? Bars? Apps?" Her brows furrowed as she struggled to come up with anything; this really wasn't her area of expertise. Maybe she'd have to trust Kate's guidance on this one.
She could see the beads of sweat forming on Kate's forehead and fought back the urge to reach out to fix her hair. It was probably better to keep it as is, to sell their cover. "Yeah, I don't think this is getting us anywhere. Come on." Yelena clapped her shoulder as she began walking. "What about being together a couple of months? Still getting to know each other - probably smarter in case anyone asks question."
Did she have to say that out loud? Unfiltered, flowing directly from her mind to out the mouth like a freaking watering can?! Stress wasn't the need to proceed with extra caution when they were about to sneak into a stuffy, crowded club and staking out a target Yelena was keeping an eye out for with Kate the Calvary in tow as volunteered backup, it was the seconds that ticked by waiting for Yelena to answer. The observation hadn't been important in the slightest - if it actually had been one... all Kate picked up on was the slight roving of eyes over Yelena's frame (who could blame them?), and then Kate's, which left her wondering if the people had thought they were a couple and then voiced it into the void.
❛ Maybe we should. ❜
The music had cut off the end of should, right? Shouldn't. Should not. ❝ ...sorry, you said— sh... should? Be a couple…? ❞ Kate's ears were ringing, and it wasn't from the throbbing bass that practically rattled her bones with the beat outside the club already. But Yelena elaborated, Kate trying to keep her jaw from dropping and mind out of the gutter imagining both of them caught someplace they shouldn't be in a compromising position, bright blues darting between spring colored orbs to search for signs of lying or joking when Yelena actually claimed one of Kate's ideas — technically not her idea — was a good one.
...she could've left out dumb right after using good though...
❝ For the thing. This. Uhhh yeah. Yeah, it's a good cover. Maybe... we should set some backstory? Just in case people ask. Like... how long we've been together? Obviously how we met needs to change too, I can't say I was about to kill you with an arrow to the head when you were trying to kill me and it was love at first sight. And... maybe some... personal details only I, as your girlfriend, would know about? For fun. ❞ She was already sweating — the warmth of the club felt wafting through the door guarded by bouncers, line ridiculously long, totally not because she was imagining a relationship with Yelena. ❝ Wanna find a way to sneak in through the back? ❞

There was nothing in Ms. Casey's expression that hinted at her knowing anything about the plan. Mark had likely been focused on getting her out at the time, unable to spare a moment to explain what was going on. Understandable, but also worrying that the responsibility now fell upon Dani; she'd hardly consider herself the best person for the job.
"Right..." She pressed her lips into a thin line as she scrambled to figure out what to do. She'd rather have Mark explain everything to her, but there was still no word from him -- and it wasn't as though Ms. Casey knew him anyway. Unfortunately, Dani was her best bet right now. "I'm not sure where Mark-- Mark S. is. It's... a long story." She sighed. "Here." Dani gently took the spatula from her hand and turned off the stove. It was a shame to waste the food Gemma had been preparing, but she shouldn't keep Ms. Casey waiting.
She led the other woman to the table, motioning for her to sit down, before taking a seat across from her. "So... There's really no easy way to say this. Mark S. got you out because your outie was trapped at Lumon -- I don't know the specifics very well... But I don't think she chose to be there." Saying they all thought Gemma was dead felt a little too cruel to say right off the bat; she'd have to work her way up to that one. "You're here so Lumon doesn't find you. Staying with Mark would be too dangerous."
" I see. " Ms. Casey knew several things about Danielle S.'s outie thanks to her position, so she wasn't entirely oblivious about her. But this was the first time she was going to converse with her, which was a whole other problem. Was she kind as Danielle S.? Soft-spoken? Gentle?
Curiosity remained in Ms. Casey's eyes as she was being filled in. So her outie knew her...but why here of all places? Why were they on the run from Lumon? " I didn't think it was possible as well... " she responded quietly. She noticed that Dani was picking at her skin, which she concluded was a sign of distress. Should she...hug her? It was one of the few things she remembered from her training, although she wondered if outies were different.
Before she could do anything, however, she was then hit with a pressing question. The last thing she remembered? " The last thing I remember is Mark S. asking me to leave the building... " She paused, then looked around. " Where is Mark S.? & why...am I away from Lumon? "

she gives a light nod to his explanation, finding connection in his words. yelena had spent so long trying to numb out everything, she never imagined she'd be here now -- an avenger of all things. no longer alone. she's still adjusting to living with so many people, being part of a team... and despite how much they bicker at times, she finds she much prefers their company over loneliness.
"i know the feeling." she doesn't offer any details, not wanting to revisit her shame rooms, but hopes he'll feel the softness behind her words - the way she's trying to reach out and give him something to hold onto. god knows that's all yelena's wanted for so long.
it's like bob can read her mind then, when his hand settles down on her wrist. he's warm, so different from the cold sweats yelena felt as she held him, trying to pull him back from the void.
she's awkward with affection still, but finds herself wanting to bask in it for a moment longer, to give something back. her wrist turns slightly, palm now upwards as her fingers ghost over his. "it's part of you." part of all of them, in a way. "you know if things start getting bad again... i'm here." she's said it many times since bob lost his memory, but it always feels like it bears repeating -- lest he go down that path again. she'd never be able to forgive herself. "you're not alone anymore."
despite yelena's tone indicating that she was being serious, bob misinterprets her observation as a joke, severely underestimating just how out of control alexei's supportive parent behavior could get. attention is then diverted to his book, of which he describes with such excitement that it isn't until afterwards that embarrassment burns at his neck for his over-enthusiasm. but like always, yelena is quick to comfort; bob appreciative for her approving sentiments.
❝ well, it's given me a lot to think about. ❞ still a touch flustered, he lets out an awkward laugh, but nevertheless nods in agreement. ❝ that part of me... i've tried so hard to counteract it with drugs and... and everything, and... well, you know where that got me. ❞
a smile is on his lips, but a sadness lingers in his eyes. even though he remembers none of it, relying on the accounts of his teammates of the event, the void's attack on new york wouldn't have happened if he hadn't signed on to the sentry program, if he hadn't been such an addict chasing after his high. the guilt weighs on his shoulders.
his gaze lowers to the book, his hands gripping the textured cover as if to ground himself before his expression softens back to normal. ❝ i've fought against me for so long... i think i need to learn how to embrace it now instead. like what you did for me. ❞ the contentment in his smile finally reaches his eyes again, a hand relinquishing its hold the the book in order to rest atop yelena's wrist.
