Ornithologist Jerry McGahan is pictured with a 6 month old Andean Condor, the largest flying bird on earth. Photographed by the Helen and Franck Schreider. Another version of this photo made it to the cover of National Geographic.
The Inception Chair is a unique piece of furniture designed by Vivian Chiu, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. It was created as part of a short experimental project and constructed in just four weeks. The chair consists of ten individual chair frames made from ash wood, ranging from standard adult size to a humorously small size. Each frame has hand-cut grooves on the inside edges of the seat frame and pegs in the back, allowing them to fit into the groove of the frame one size bigger. This design enables the chair frames to be taken apart and reassembled, functioning as a single chair when pieced together. Apart from its functional aspect, when disassembled, it can also be viewed as a piece of sculpture. The name “Inception Chair” was chosen over “Matryoshka Chair” to reflect the concept of a chair within a chair, reminiscent of the nested Russian dolls. The name also draws a parallel to the movie “Inception,” where things are not always as they seem at first glance.
This bicycle, called the "RELATIVITY Special", if pedaled at 90 rpm, is designed to travel faster than the speed of light. This is proven by a description of the gear ratios on the sheets seen on the wall behind it. One revolution of the pedals sends the bike 6 times around the earth. (It is part of the art exhibition "Circle of Time" that Pat Chirapravati curated now on display at California State University, Sacramento).
