paris & gyaru culture

if you've been in the gyaru community for a while, you have likely noticed references to france - specifically paris - in hime styles such as roma, himegal & himekaji.

but, why is france in the fashion?

it isn't just reflected in himegal (although hime is the most obvious), it's an influence in other brands not tied to gyaru such as amavel and apuweiser-riche, known for being sophisticated.

during japan's modernisation, the government looked to france for inspiration in the late 1800's. versailles was a forefront of this idea, which also baked itself into the well known phenomenon "paris syndrome". the idea of luxury, princesses and high fashion became tied to the culture. subsequently, we can attach ringlet hairstyles and rose motifs to this movement.

these same ideas became staples into hime. brands such as liz lisa & jesus diamante became popular with their many pieces reflecting motifs of versailles and rococo, french phrases & architecture. while hime is possible on a budget, it's known for being expensive and luxe, influencing the hairstyles that identified gyaru to one another.

however, this is not to accredit hime's existence to france. the french aspects are only one part of a subculture that exists only thanks to japan's gals. rococo's artistic and decorative fashion helped shape what hime is known for today, but many other trends did too!

pink, glitter and pearls aren't inherently french and emerged naturally. some pieces are more obvious than not with the romantic ideas of france:

gyaru diary entry #1

i've found myself gearing up for a small trip away from home, in a place no one knows me, the fashion capital. i've never been so excited aside from my trip to japan last year, so i want to make the most of it and show off my closet.

i've watched the gyaru scene for a few years, and i've slowly curated my wardrobe to have exclusive liz lisa & dear my love pieces. there are a few other jp brands featured in it, alongside handmade accessories. i also just purchased some old liz lisa gloves! and now, i get to show it off, and i really want to do my makeup right for it.

it's subtle, but it's a start. pale pink lips and a dusty blush, an exaggerated focus on dolly eyes — a caramel brown fluff of the hair to top it off. i'm hoping i'll be able to do my waterline right, as i don't have much experience in that.

in other news, i found someone selling exclusive liz lisa sub-brand clothing: tralala, a 2000's brand that went under. it's cute, but is it seriously worth over 100? the quality is average and it'd be worth it if it wasn't so inflated. i hope i can work it all out soon.

learning another language is always beautiful, no matter how long it takes. like, what do you mean you are crying because you had to read a sentence twice to get it, when at the beginning you had to do it five times? kicking yourself because you had to listen to an audio at .75x to understand it fully, when two months ago you could barely understand one or two words, even at your second try? getting mad because you had to research how to spell a word, when a few days back you didn't even know how to pronounce it? hell, that's amazing. keep going. you'll get there.
