The Good ‘No’
Today is a day where I have experienced rejection. I know many of us have gone through it--some more than others. All I can think about is the Deshauna Barber who won Miss USA. “I want someone to give me a good no.” And at the moment I’m hoping that hearing this ‘good no’ will make me persevere and do something about so the person who gave me the message would feel sorry for saying ‘no’.
Michelle Obama’s high school guidance counselor once gave her a ‘good no’ which pushed her to limits that she would only dream of reaching. The counselor told her that she was shooting too high when she came across the decision of going to Princeton. Holy hell was that counselor way off. The woman went off to her dream school, Princeton, and even Harvard. She didn’t let that ‘no’ rumble her stomach like a bad burger, but she allowed it to implore her and persevere.
Perseverance. According to the dictionary it is the persistence that one has in doing something despite the difficulty or delay in achieving success. The guidance counselor was the first lady’s delay. The world’s mindset of what beauty looked like was a difficulty and delay for Deshauna to shove her persona in their faces. These two strong women had to go through obstacles and have definitely experienced a good number of ‘no’s’. Why should I be any different?
It’s time to shove it in their faces and show them what they’re missing.

Dear eighth grade Faith,
Hey Faith. You’ve finally made it too the top of the food chain. You think you know what you want to do (which I know involves volleyball). Take rejection as an opportunity to grow in strength. It might take a while for you to get to where you’re going, but just know when you get knocked down that it feels so freaking good when you get up.
So you ran for student council president and won. Which wasn’t really a surprise to anyone since you ran against ykw. It will be a struggle but keep going.
I know for a fact that you were thinking about boys this year. I just can’t think of who it was. Who knew you were going to get a boyfriend almost a whole year after graduation. Just remember that it wasn’t either of you guys’ fault and stay strong.
You and Lonnie did what you promised to Dr. Fraizer which was sing at graduation. If you guys were going to do one thing before you left that school, it was to sing your heart out to God. Even if we didn’t sound like the Clark Sisters.
High school is going to be a wild ride. Hang tf on.

Universe, hear my prayer.
For years I’ve thought that there was only one way to look at life. And that way was through a successful lens. I didn’t grow up with parents who pushed me to extreme limits just so I could succeed. They didn’t push like all of those celebrities you see who are earning millions on behalf of their harsh parents.
I assumed that my mom didn’t do it because her mother pushed her to extreme limits to the point where she couldn’t live out her dream and is now stuck doing a job that is not benefiting her in any way. And her sister is doing nothing to help with the situation. I assumed that my dad didn’t push because he was a very soft spoken man. I know they want the best for my siblings and I but I can’t help but wonder if they had a firmer hand on our necks or if they never gave up their dreams would we be in the position we were in now.
That’s what’s so great about fantasy land. In an alternate universe, our alter selves would be doing things that we would only see in our dreams. And this is how it would go...
My mom, Captain Harper, would be seeing where she’d be flying next. To be appropriate for the situation we are in now, she’d probably be in a Zoom call with her co-workers drinking martinis and showing their pets in the camera in flight attendant uniforms or gossiping about one of the flight attendants. However, my mom was too nice and humble to do the second thing. But even if she did, she would be happy. And living her dream.
My dad, famous producer Ed Harper, would be putting together tracks for famous singers/rappers all over the world. His studio on the first floor would be awesome. Perfected soundproof walls and a larger space. The room would be split where the artist could record their songs on one side of the glass and on the other my dad would titter with slides and buttons to make the artist sound better. My siblings and I would be messing around in the studio and spitting tracks. He’d be able to travel the world, go to the Grammy’s to support his artist, and maybe even loosen up and drink alcohol. But not too much because he would be too concerned with his vegetarianism and heath. But he would be happy. And living his dream.
My sister, Jasmine Harper, would be studying her lines for a musical she’d gotten into while finishing her famous podcast. She’d be in New York finishing her senior year of college but sadly in her apartment because of the outbreak. She’d be at home with her cat and the man/woman she’d been ‘hanging out with’ would be delivering her yet another carton of Talenti ice cream risking going to visit her because she had begged them to bring it over. Her apartment would smell of mint from her various teas and cat poop, but she’d be happy. And living her dream.
My brother, Josh Harper, would be doing better than me in school and we’d basically be competing for our parents to look and see who’s report card was better. He’d been Drum Captain since his sophomore year because he was just that good and he had been playing football since sixth grade because Coach Ron Moore thought a big guy like him had to be in a sport. And mom didn’t let her nerves get the best of her and allowed him to play and she was happy for him. Josh had also been playing basketball on the side but he knew he loved playing football more. And the colleges saw that. Without having to submit the most greatest essay that he’d written and the best that I’d ever read because colleges saw his potential from his sports and musical career. He’s gotten offers from Duke, Howard, and even Harvard because of his interest in science and math. He didn’t know what to choose, however, my parents were grateful that they didn’t have to pay a dime for college. In quarantine, he managed to create this weird beat that dad really enjoyed to which dad introduced to one of the artist he recorded in the past. But he’d be happy. And living his dream.
And me. That’d be a story of its own.
              To be continued....

Hi! My name is Faith Harper and I am a Girl Scout in Chicago, IL, troop 21006. I am selling Girl Scouts cookies and I need your help to achieve my goal of 4000 packages of cookies. If I sell that many, the prize is an IPad Air. This helps my mom and I a lot because I would need it for high school and she wouldn’t have to buy it. Help me achieve my goal and help a fellow Girl Scout! #girlscoutcookies #girlscouts #goal
