Turning to see Faye, she sighed and re-lit her joint and shrugged. “Now, don’t be gettin’ me wrong or anything. I love all of them but the screams definitely don’t help the nerves. Plus, I don’t believe in modern medicine. They just need to make it legal like in Colorado.” She chuckled as she took the folders and shuffled through the names. “Yeah, that’s all of them. Sort of a late day at the clinic, ain’t it?”
“ Different methods work for different people, you can’t expect to treat everyone the same way. It’s my favorite thing about my work, it’s always changing. I could never spend a day with screaming children, I love them but from afar.” there’s upbeat laughter that comes with her words. Settling down, family, all of that was a distant thought right now. She was still trying to figure her way through, there’d be plenty of time for that later. “ And don’t worry, secret is safe with me, my lips are sealed. We’re a kind of fix-it-all place, unless we have to refer people out to the hospital. Summer time means more patients, so longer hours.”

“It’s enough to make me miss New York” she muttered. Not that she could go back there, not now. There was too many memories there for her. “People forget how important fluids are. Seem to spend my life drinking water, but better then anything else really” and she supposed now that was just going to result in her needing to pee even more. Oh she didn’t want this, but she didn’t know what else to do at this stage. “Used to come here on holidays. But only lived here about a month or so”.
“ I’ve never been to New York, but it’s kind of easy to miss the big city life. All the stuff going on, never a dull moment. Small city charm grows on you too, I promise.” realizing she’s drawing on and on, she doesn’t wanna keep the other from her run any longer. “Do you mind if I tag along? It’s always easier to pace yourself when you’re with someone.” Faye’s learning to socialize more, an easy thing when most people in Raeford make small take on outings or are know one another. She was worried upon moving here that she would be an outsider, but the small city had shown her things were quite different than expected.

Since arriving in town, Drew had tried to lay low, and tried to get a feel for the place. She had always loved books growing up, a sort of guilty pleasure for her, so spending hours in the bookstore was an exciting adventure. Drew had meandered down all the aisles starting from the front, her eyes scanning over all the books, plucking those that interested her to find out more. She had been so focused on the titles that she didn’t notice the other girl, “Sorry!” she laughed, before also pulling her hand back, “Yeah, they are pretty good. I like trying to guess what will happen next, makes me feel like Sherlock Holmes a bit I think.”
“ I always love the race of trying to figure it out before the author reveals it, or when it turns out to be someone you never expected. I actually just finished one where it was the detective on the case that had been helping her, giant twist I didn’t see coming.” Faye realizes before she can help it, she’s rambling on and on about something the other might not care about. “Sorry, I’m so used to chatty patients, kind of forget everyone doesn’t want to be held up book shopping! But you should go ahead and take it, I can always snag it after you’ve finished.”

Noah hadn’t really left the house in days, other than to go to work or to pick up some supplies from the local convenience store. He had been avoiding people as much as he could, hating consistently having to reiterate the story of his wife, although he was well aware that the town already knew. Apparently, they just wanted to hear it in his words. Today, however, he had found himself in the local bookstore, having dropped off all of Devon’s books as a donation to the store. He had then found himself wandering around the store, reminiscing on all the times he’d spent in here trying to pick out books that his wife would have liked - and he only noticed that there was another person there when they both reached for the same book at the same time. “It was my late wife’s favourite…” He replied, the words slipping out before he could think to stop them, “Uh, sorry… It’s a really great book, though.”
“You should go ahead and take it, there’s always amazon for me.” Faye doesn’t want to intrude any more on the heavy subject, though it’s an insist he takes the copy. “I’ve got a ton of different things I could be reading, so it’s yours!” tucked under her arm was already three different novels, and they would be plenty until she had time to visit again. “ Hey --- ! I’ve seen you around the clinic before, are you a doctor there?” She was pretty familiar with most of the staff here, spending almost all her time there, but his face wasn’t one she saw very often. She doesn’t mean to catch him off guard or make him hold any longer of a conversation than wanted. “I’m a nurse there.”

Jessica always looked at books very lovingly. They had been there for her during the years — they were one of the sources of most songs she had written on her little notebook, they were there when she was happy, sad, angry, or when everything was so complicated she didn’t understand a thing that was happening. They were there. One of her best friends growing up was the former librarian, who always gave her the most exciting titles that had freshly been donated to the library, until she finally had money to start a little bit of a library to herself, which so far consisted of a shelf in her apartment that was being slowly added on. It justified her presence in the bookstore and it definitely justified her hand preparing to snag the book she had been wanting the most, it was on the most read list of the New York’s time. Every once in a while she liked to discover small jewels among old books, but well-reviewed books were a must. Someone else was after the same book, which made her pull back as well and smile at the red headed. “Those are amazing, I could not agree more. You can have it–” she pointed to the book, especially as she was already piling about five other books in her arms. “Just you’ll have to kind of bond with me, because I’ll need to know if it’s any good, or not.”
“We can start a book club, review notes.” the excitement from the bright and bubbly woman causes an instant smile to appear on Faye’s lips. “I don’t mind letting you go first! If you can offer any other recommendations. I don’t have as much time to read as I like.” She had poured everything into her career of choice, and it was just now Faye was finding her own path outside of work, rediscovering who she was and things she loved. “I was stocking up on e-books, but let’s face it, they don’t compare to having the physical thing in hand.” novels had been an escape to another world before she was adopted, a place where the fiction was better than reality. “Some of the used books are fun too, finding notes and what-nots from their old owners, it just gives it character!”

As the redhead grabbed the exact same book he had been eyeing, he shot her a quick smile as she turned her head towards him, letting her know that it was okay. James slowly raised his brows as she started to speak, she seemed to want to make some small talk. He softly hummed in agreement, “It’s one of my favorite genres, too.” He agreed with a nod. James didn’t read much, it wasn’t really on the top of his list of priorities. Though when he had some time off, or whenever he needed to do some research for a case, he would usually turn to books. “What made you choose that one?” James asked, as his eyes landed on the book they’d both taken interest in.
“ are you sure? I have tons of others on my list I could be reading, I don’t have a lot of time to burn through them, so it might take me ages.” slender hand pulls subject of their conversation from the shelf, offering it up to him one last time. His question is answered with a shrug of her shoulders at first, followed by what seemed a silly answer. “ All the romance novels are the same, boy and girl fall in love, tragedy strikes. I like a good book with twists and turns, something that keeps you on the edge of your seat.” Faye had her fair share of favorites in every genre, but this was one she always seemed to return to. “What about you?”

Freedom had never felt so sweet. Six long weeks in a hospital room were enough to drive anyone insane, and Kenzie was sure that she had gotten out just before the worst had overtaken her. She’d been discharged that morning, driven home and given an electric wheelchair to use until her wrist had healed enough to allow her to use her crutches, given the state of her leg. Thankfully, Raeford was a small place, and it was pretty easy to navigate around with the chair. Her heart ached a little at the thought of the twins remaining in the hospital for a few more weeks, but she knew it was in their best interests. On her first outing, however, she’d found herself in the local ice cream shop, sitting with an extra large banana split, with extra ice cream - an absolute indulgence, considering the hospital food she’d been living on for the past two weeks. So many familiar faces had passed her, offering glances of sympathy, which were difficult to reciprocate, but eventually she called out to one of them, “Hey– why don’t you come join me? I think I may have ordered way too much ice cream for one person, and I’ll absolutely share with ya if you share a story from the last three years with me.”
Faye had been reviewing the menu over and over, unable to settle on any flavor. A stop in for quick sweet had been her intention, grabbing something on the way home to studio apartment. Familiar voice catches her attention, and she’s quick to turn on her heels and hues fall on Kenzie. “ You’re looking amazing! How are you feeling?” She doesn’t mean to quickly turn on nurse mode, but it’s hard when patient is seen outside of work. Seat is taken across from her, laugh given at mountain of ice cream before them. “I honestly can’t blame you, the food there is terrible.” Her request for a story leaves her pausing for thought for just a moment, “ I can’t offer you three years, I can give you something from the last three months! But in my defense, it might bore you to death.”

missbirdine:
The last little backpack had left for the day, and the daycare sat silent for the evening. Birdie always stayed for a little while after the day ended to be sure everything was together for the next day and that the turtle wouldn’t die suddenly in the night. The window had been left cracked one night and she came in to find a very angry raccoon trying to carry him away, so she made sure that never happened again. After the markers had their lids returned and the broken crayons picked up out of the floor, she went out to the playground behind the building with her small bag she kept in the car and got her lighter and small joint out of the pocket. “Oh-oh shit.” she choked mid-drag as she heard some foot steps on the sidewalk behind her and she hurriedly put out flame and tried to fan away the smell with no use.
“ working with kids all day, I don’t blame you.” it wasn’t that Faye minded kids, but just the appointments she had with them at the clinic for thirty minutes could be hair-pulling stressful. “I was just dropping off updated medical records for you, I think I have everyone covered.” slender hand reaches out to offer the folder to the other woman. it was a last minute errand she been tasked with, though Faye would never be the type to say no to anything. It wasn’t like the daycare was out of the way, everything in this town eventually circled back around. “ I think it’s stupid it’s illegal, way too many health benefits from it. I’ve read all kinds of crazy studies, they’re interesting!”

In reality, maybe running now wasn’t really the best idea. It was second nature to her though, a way to clear her head first thing in the morning. Or had been, now she didn’t seem to be able to escape any of the thoughts running through her head. Things were meant to be easier then this. But her brother wouldn’t talk to her, she wouldn’t talk to the rest of her family, and instead of admitting anything to anyone, she just ran. “Damn, this hot this early?” she muttered, stopping to try and catch her breath”.
“Gotta love the south and it’s humidity, right?” summer was never a favorite of hers, even though there was always something to do, temperatures always rose away too high. “ I can’t tell you how many people I see in the clinic for dehydration this time of year, fun times.” Faye’s known to be chatty, and the other is a face she hasn’t seen around town before. Jogging was something new she had picked up, trying to squeeze in at least a small run before work hours “are you new here? I don’t think I’ve seen you around!”

bookstore is a frequented spot by the ginger, shelves surrounding with the next adventure to whisk her off. In truth, fiction was her favorite but it didn’t stop her from grabbing something more informational, trying to stay on top of the ever-changing pace of the medical field. hues glance down to worn watch on her wrist, making sure she has just enough time to grab something before dashing off to the clinic. On slow days, a book was her best friend, but those days were far and few in between. Being the only source of medical care in the town, all cases had to eventually come through the clinic at first. But it wasn’t like Faye seemed to mind, the long hours were rewarding in their own right. Slender digits reach to grab an intriguing title, before pulling back taking notice of the other who also seemed interested in same novel. “ Murder Mysteries are a favorite of mine, I love all the suspense.” warm smile given as she makes small talk.
