I did have to fight for my life to post but here’s my contribution for February Friday week one - siblings. I added a second chapter to my fic until daybreak exploring what would happen if Aled and Carys had ran away together.

Aled looked at her shoes, the backpack still hanging off one shoulders.

“You’re leaving,” he said.

“Yeah.”

I've not read a book in years.

I've had guilt over books I've wanted to read, books recommended by friends, and bought as presents all sitting unread. And that feeling of guilt builds until it feels insurmountable.

I found Radio Silence Book Club really tough. I've had to work really hard to make myself read. But it's also been so exciting, reading along with other people and I feel a huge sense of achievement at having finished the book.

Radio Silence Reread

Since today is the last day of our Radio Silence Book Club, I wanted to thank everyone who took part, posted or even just supported this blog. I loved hearing everyones thoughts as we read Radio Silence together. Please keep sharing your thoughts under the 'Radio Silence book club' tag!

the more i think about the similarities between radio silence and i saw the tv glow the more i feel like a mad scientist like they are SO SO SIMILAR! spoilery analysis below the cut ->

the prominent characters of both radio silence and i saw the tv glow all struggle to distinguish their identities from the false perceptions other people have of them, then deal with this by either physically running away (maddy, carys) or by attempting to follow the paths laid for them, which only ever causes them to suffocate further (owen, frances, aled, daniel). additionally, all of them are in some way or another inextricably connected to a piece of fiction-within-fiction.

in i saw the tv glow, the pink opaque is initially framed as fiction but ends up being more "real" to maddy and owen than real life, which is thus used as a metaphor for queerness and gender. part of the way this is presented visually is through the use of light - natural daylight is used really sparingly, it's often night and the light is almost always artificial, seen through curtains, or most importantly, coming from a tv.

in radio silence, universe city is also a piece of fiction-inside-fiction that feels more real than real life, to the point where aled even says "the voice in my head is radio's voice," which when connected to the fact that he makes multiple references to preferring radio androgynous over anything else, can be reasonably interpreted that he isn't necessarily cis or at least has something gendery going on. the use of light of radio silence is similarly connected - dark, night, stars, and artificial light are essential to the aesthetic, and are obviously meant to be reminiscent of universe city itself.

so essentially, both narratives subvert the common idea that tv and the internet are completely separate from "real life." rather, they allow them to become portals between fiction and reality that the characters can use to explore their identities - a blurring of the lines that will likely be familiar to queer audiences.

this is further emphasized by the way the main characters are obsessed with their respective fictional stories and use them as an escape from the "real world," though they feel deeply self-conscious about this and only fully share their love of it with their closest friends. however, both friends end up being far more connected to the stories than expected - maddy is the one to figure out that she and owen are actually tara and isabel from the pink opaque, and aled turns out to be the creator of universe city - further blurring the lines between story and reality.

this part is so interesting… aled makes a whole new world (universe city) in his attempt to contact carys and the whole idea is that the two worlds cross and parallel each other and yet he feels the exact opposite about carol
