My physical heart feels so exposed, so shallowly planted. It feels like it is in my mouth. I can’t tell if I’m spitting it out or swallowing it. I can’t tell if I’m going to chomp it to bits just by trying to be here. — Jenny Slate

After an entire day of being soaked and getting soaked over and over again and hosed (although, to be fair, most of the time it was Edith doing the hosing), a bowl of chicken soup along with her warmest blanket and Netflix didn’t sound half bad. In fact, the brunette had become even more determined to gather a decent sum of money in order to get to her little paradise sooner. “Trust me, the soup is the best medicine– and this coming from a professional.“ Edith claimed in a light voice. “It’s something my Nana taught me. Soup and whiskey– her all time favorites.” At the mention of her mother, her gaze drifted away and she shrugged for lack of a better reaction. “Nah, my folks are proud of me.” Proud they certainly were– in their eyes she was on the right path– to become a surgeon as respected as they were. It had been Edith’s choice to distance herself from them, that way it was easier to hide the chaos within. That way, they didn’t know the accident which had taken place seven years prior was still eating her alive. “I almost want to send them a selfie right now, just to see how they’d react.”
Ida’s story was a complicated one, from the looks of it. In such a short period of time she’d moved three times, all three marking a big life change that surely wasn’t easy. Which for some reason made Edith appreciate Ida’s Kindness with a big K even more. “Are we… Sorry about the divorce or are we alright with it?” The divorce happening in the first place was a bad sign but nothing in life was black and life and there was no way of saying Ida didn’t have any regrets. Edith’d had about some of her past relationships.
The woman clenched her jaw, as it turned out she put too much hope in the Mayor’s office and the Grimmbrook law enforcement– People who actually could make a difference, had that sort of power. And Ida’s reaction told her she wasn’t the only one noticing how passive they had been. “I agree, it’s better to find someone from there. The Mayor, the police… They don’t know or– want to know the people and what they are going through, obviously.”
———
Tumblr media
"I'd be happy to snap a shot of you in the middle of hosing down cars," Ida remarked slyly, guffawing at the idea. She knew very little information about Edith aside from her occupation, and family stuff, as it had a tendency of being, seemed too complicated, too unworthy of delving into. She was glad the woman's parents were proud of her--they should be.
"And we are...ambivalent about the divorce," Ida continued, a half lie. She wasn't so sure that she missed Farishka as much as she missed having someone after going so long without, and though she held no ill-will toward the woman, she had gone out of her way to avoid crossing paths with her in town. "I had just moved here, and I was sort of...all over the place. And then I met someone and things went really fast." Ida shrugged, and then leveled her gaze on Edith, warning, "If you ever get married, make sure they're the one."
So what? She was still a bit of a romantic at the roots of her.
At mention of the inffectiveness of the town's higher ups, Ida shook her head, disgusted. "I just feel like if being on the ground level of this whole thing and doing something, even something small and stupid like this, is the best we can do, then it's the right thing, you know?"
And it was certainly successful. Ida surveyed the strand of cars that had accumulated, impressive if not slightly daunting, and grinned at Edith. "Why don't you finish hosing this one down and I'll get started on the next one, 'kay?"

Ariela shrugged, trying to make the gesture as nonchalant as she could. “Maybe we already have it and we’re just waiting for the right time for you to get on board so we can tell you.” She cast a glance over Ida’s way, a teasing glint in her eye as a smile returned to her lips. But as good as she was at wheedling out information from people sometimes, she drew the line at social security numbers. And trying to put two people together by force. With her social circles being what they were back home, she’d almost been in that situation herself and she’d despised the lack of freedom. She hardly wanted to be a hypocrite, so she didn’t press the issue any more than she already had.
“I don’t know. I find people energizing.” She shrugged again. Who needed coffee or energy drinks when you could feed off of the conversations of other people? Even coming off of a long shift after work, Ariela still felt ready to go with the need to do something. Maybe that’s how she ended finding a little bit of trouble more often than not. She scoffed a bit, shaking her head with a smile. “You sound like-”
Well, she wanted to say her mother. But when was the last time she’d ever talked to her mom about any such thing or the interesting people around town? When was the last time she’d spoken to her mother?
“You sound like Sebastian. I’d be careful if I were you.”
Tumblr media
——
Ida didn’t have the heart to tell Ariela how long she’d be waiting if that were the case, so she simply rolled her eyes in admonishment at the idea, chuckling a little. Maggie was a wonderful woman, of course, and Ida was sure there was a line of people who would jump at the opportunity to be with her, but part of Ida still resided in the past, still clung to things she had no business ever entertaining as possibilities. There was an entire life Ida needed to let go of.
She grinned at Ari’s exertion that people were a source of inspiration and not a drain, well aware that it’s what made Ariela so unique. To say that she was energized at the end of a long shift would be a vast overstatement, despite how much Ida genuinely enjoyed getting to know people. Ari was simply one of a kind, and she hoped that the woman realized it.
Tumblr media
“Well, Sebastian sounds super smart,” Ida retorted, scrunching her nose playfully. She was glad Ariela had so many people looking out for her; it alleviated some of her concern, if not entirely. Ida came to stand next to the finished car, letting Ari spray the suds clean from its exterior as she surveyed it and then, with a nod, she decided. “Okay. Take a break, you. You’ve been on your feet all morning.”

A gilded cage is still a prison, and the more time that Paul spends at the Yao residence, the more cooped up he feels. Bad enough that he has a bunkmate again for the first time since a halfway house post-San Quentin. Even worse that he’s in someone else’s home, on someone else’s timeline, depending on someone else’s generosity and mercy. Being confined to the Yao house is taking its toll, and the only outlet he can find is working out. He’ll do anything – lifting weights, pushups with Grams sitting on his back – hell, he even tried yoga at this point. But he turned back to his tried and true cardio, running through the neighborhood.
It just happens that what is presumably the Lawson residence is well within his normal jogging route. What had been an observation on one of his early runs, that the residence was a few blocks away, giving a short wave as he’d caught the eyes of the women living there, became a routine site during his exercise. It’s not that he’s trying to check up on Ida or her roommate (or roommates?), and it’s not that he’s trying to be a spy. He just makes a note when he passes the building as if it’s a landmark, a marker that his run is half over.
The morning is still clear, and Paul takes his chances with the mist so that he can feel the freedom of running through the streets of Grimmbrook. As he takes note of his halfway marker, he slows down to take a break and drink some water. As he catches his breath, Paul sees the figure of one Ida Lawson, and waves his hand in greeting. “Mornin’,” he says, feeling dumb for not having anything better to say. “How’s it going?” He takes another look at her home and squints. “You’ve got some loose shingles.”
Tumblr media
———
Ida had never found it in herself to be a late-riser, even on her days off, even when her schedule shifted to working almost every night; it simply wasn’t in her to waste a perfectly good morning. And while a good percentage of her early days were spent cleaning, or walking the dogs, or heading into work early to run inventory and stock the bar, on her rare day off she longed for activity, finding it difficult to sit still.
And that’s how the garden began.
It was a small undertaking at first, just a few vegetable seeds for her and Ella’s favorite dishes, nothing too out of hand. But as the plants grew, so did her and Ella’s desire to grow more, and now, she’s constructing their own little raised garden, drill in hand, potting soil at the ready. She’s hoping to surprise Ella with it when she wake up. That plan falls momentarily by the wayside when she glances up to notice a familiar face jogging down the street, and Ida extends her free arm in a wave while she finishes drilling the two boards together to form one half of the garden. Then she comes to stand, greeting the man. Her earthquake buddy. Paul.
“Hey!” She responds in kind, grateful to see him in one piece, considering the state of Grimmbrook at the moment. She grins and then, at his word, turns around to survey the aforementioned damage to the house. “Oh, yeah. The last storm kinda...took its’ toll.” She turned back to him and pulled her lips down in a slight grimace, an expression of yikes.
“How’ve you been?”

Maggie’s smile grew larger. Any time anyone remembered her birds she appreciated it, but when they actually got excited about them she got a bit fluttery. It made her feel much more like this place was actually her home. “Really? I’d definitely love to have more members! I can text you the details? I think I have your number.”
When Ida laughed, Maggie did as well. “Hey, I can’t make a sponge cake to save my life, so your lemon one definitely sounds like an achievement to me. I know the feeling though. It feels like nothing around here’s been going right recently.”
Tumblr media
———
"Oh God, yeah," Ida agreed eagerly, nodding as she did so. She trusted Maggie more than most people in this town to give her the skills she needed to feel as though she could defend herself, and the thought that she and Ella could do it together was downright exciting. "Text me, for sure. I'll try to talk the girls here into joining, too," she assured Maggie excitedly.
Tumblr media
At Maggie's encouragement, Ida scoffed, but made a mental note. "I'll bring in my next concoction for you to try," she promised, grinning. "That way it's not just me and Ella packing on calories. What’s your favorite dessert?”

“Maybe it me and my cousin brought all our bad luck here,” he responded in a joking manner. If they really arrived for the worst part of it all, then they were pretty unlucky, As if moving to a town like this wasn’t enough torturing itself, if it weren’t for Wesley, he wouldn’t have moved to Grimmbrook. Most of the things happening didn’t really impact him to be bothered about them, now the mist had hit home. Literally, and also his somewhat legal source of income. “The fog is ruining me, if I’m being honest. I got a place to stay, but my club was in Underland and that fucking fog doesn’t seem to be going away.” He shrugged as he looked at the brunette. “I know the pub is still functioning, but how about you? Did you get displaced or something?”

"Trust me, this town was cursed long before you guys got here," she said sardonically, tossing him a look. After all, it's what'd brought her here in the first place, the mysterious death of her own sister in the town's borders. The rest of this chaos? Maybe the town itself was just... cursed. "I'm so sorry about your club, though," Ida murmured, dejected at the very idea that his livelihood was suffering. "That has to be...I can't even imagine." She was lucky, all things considered, and she knew as much. "I actually haven't been affected, yet," she said with a wary glance upward. "I rent a house up in Neverland with my roommate, so we're safe for now."

“Eddie,” she smiled at the name, laughing a bit at the TBD and nodded. “They have to stick. I didn’t name Captain for a few days and then well, Captain fits.” The dog was large, majestic and the leader of the small pack. “My father got me Oscar Wilde for Christmas before he passed away.” She hated framing it like that but that’s what most people thought –– an unfortunate accident had taken Montgomery’s life. “He got me all three but Oscar is the baby,” though one wouldn’t be able to tell by Oscar’s size.
Lulu moved closer to Winnie after a beat and she scratched behind her ears as Ida spoke. “I guess some things don’t change – like how popular a pint is regardless of what’s going on. And no, I actually run around Swan Lake most mornings but I’ve had to find alternative routes with all this going on. And it’s not as conducive for running so I can bring them along. I’m an ambitious runner sure, but I’m not crazy enough to try with three dogs.”
———
Ida smiled a bit ruefully at Winnie’s mention of the details of the acquisition of Oscar Wilde, nodding in passive understanding; Montgomery Snow’s passing had made the news, and Ida’d thought it sad at the time, of course, but had ultimately, like the rest of town seemingly had, forgotten about it. It wasn’t until Winifred even brought it up that she remembered, and then, at once, felt guilty about it. She let her hand drop a bit to let the regal dogs sniff it, and smiled up at Winnie. “They’re beautiful. They could be show dogs.”
At mention of her route being altered due to all this, Ida grimaced just slightly; she was relieved Winnie was taking it seriously unlike some of those not directly affected. “I know. I tried to run with them, once, but it just turns into an awkward half-jog half-sprint,” Ida chuckled. “I’m lucky I didn’t lose them both in the attempt, honestly.”
Tumblr media
“Anyway,” Ida said, shaking her head at herself, as if to clear it of previous thoughts. She changed the subject. “Anything else new with you? I haven’t seen you since...well, Farishka, I guess,” Ida smiled, a bit awkwardly. People that ran in Farishka’s social circle had somewhat unceremoniously decided to avoid Ida once the divorce was made (very) public, so to have someone actually give her the time of day was surprising in and of itself.

Ariela snorted a little under her breath, watching the soap cloud rise and fall unceremoniously back to the ground. But she was thankful for the reprieve of whatever kind of compliment Ida was trying to give. She’d figured out what had gotten her so worked up about it, in the meantime. Too much like home. How many times had similar words and ideas been thrown at her growing up, as if that was the only thing she was? Easy to narrow down and bottle up. Of course, she knew the woman thought more of her than that but- too close to home.
Waiting for Ida to finish up she took her hand off the trigger of the hose, instead busying herself with other clumps of soap suds that were brought up with the slight breeze in the air, trailing her finger through them when they got close enough. “Sure she is,” she replied with a little nod, but her eyes glanced at Ida slyly even as she poked at another clump of bubbles. “You know, Daniel did accuse me of being a mind reader the other day so if you ever want me to do a little snooping, I’d be really good at it.”
Tumblr media
To her next question Ariela shook her head simply, restarting the hose as she got back to work. “Nope, not a soul. I feel like I might be a little too busy for relationships.” Between work, trying to get out of the line of fire of the next Underland crisis, music, her friends and Noel she had her hands full. But it was hardly a bad thing.
———
Chuffed by Ariela's accusation--and that her detective friend had attributed her as having such power--Ida shook her head, grinning as she did so. "Between you and Ella, I'm surprised the two of you haven't come back to me with full details on her upbringing and her social security number," Ida ribbed. Maggie had gained someone of a reputation at the bar for being one of the few regulars to get a genuine smile out of Ida even on her worst days, but that spoke more to Maggie's personality than it did Ida's feelings.
At Ariela's explanation, Ida nodded, understanding it completely herself. "By the time we're off of work most of the time I feel like even if we had the incentive to date we'd never have the energy," she lamented, rolling her eyes in annoyance at one Noah Cameron's insane shift demands of the three of them. Besides, Ariela was a smart, capable girl, even if Ida worried about her sometimes and her recent entanglement with Noel.

As endearing as Ida’s selflessness and her contribution to the god-forsaken town of Grimmbrook were, Edith kept a careful eye on her. Working at the hospital, she knew the type. People who kept giving and giving but along the way forgot to take care of themselves. So mid-smiling at the willing and hosing down the reluctant, Edith made sure to check up on the lovely brunette every once in a while. And she even pointed the hose at Ida for a moment or so, until she was given a promise in the form of the sacred scout’s salute. Her poker face broke into a grin and she lowered the hose. “You better, I’m already googling the best chicken soup recipes– I have a feeling we’re all catching a cold here today.” A pause as she flashed Ida her most brilliant smile. “It’ll be worth it, though! Our very own battle scars,”
Tumblr media
As a child of not one but two Harvard surgeons, the three-story Wonderland house Edith had grown up with was situated in the mountains but as someone curious by nature who spent most of her days wandering around Grimmbrook with her squad she was familiar with Underland as well. Those streets had been scary at first, but once you’d broken into one old abandoned factory too many and learned how to stay out of trouble, there was no room for fear. “I haven’t, although at my most rebellious I threatened my mother with renting an apartment down there and getting a job at Fairy Tails,” a beat as her smile vanished and she licked her lips. “Why did you move away?” Edith asked, knowing full well she’d get mad at the universe if she found out bad or traumatic had happened to Ida, so bad to make her find another home. Underland clearly wasn’t the safest place to visit at the moment so Edith searched her mind for some other options. Maybe she could ask around to find someone willing to accept help, acquaintance of an acquaintances, friend of a friend. “There is that fundsforunderland site where people can make donations. Although… I haven’t heard anything about it lately. Maybe we should look into it?” Edith glanced at Ida. “Has Mayor Kane said or… done anything?” She questioned with a displeased look on her face.
———
Ida gave the woman an impressed smile, appreciative of the effort she was putting into both the car wash but also the inevitable payback of exhaustion they'd all likely face as a result of it. "Chicken soup sounds good," she remarked, taking another sip of water as she planted a hand on her hip. There was a dinner idea, at least.
Nodding at Edith's story about Underland, Ida smiled, remembering her own rebellious phase and the idle threats made therein. "Your mom must be so disappointed in what you ended up doing," Ida murmured sarcastically, chasing her remark with a smirk. Then she looked down to her feet for a moment, a bit awkward as she rarely had to actually explain that portion of her life--most people, she assumed, knew. "I got married, actually. Moved up to Wonderland." Looking up at Edith, she gave a one-shouldered shrug. "Now I'm divorced and I ended up in Neverland." It was certainly the quickest way to run the gamut of Grimmbrook, if not the easiest.
Funds for Underland, of course. Ida nodded; she had seen the website advertised on the Grimm's website and...that was it. She had hoped the mayor would put a little more effort into pretending to care about her city at the very least, but no such luck, it would appear. "I haven't heard anything out of her office since the official statement. And I don't necessarily have the best belief in law enforcement being able to address the problem right now," she said, a hint of bitterness shaping the edges of her words.

Winifred smiled politely at Ida. Farishka’s ex-wife. Not exactly someone she associated much with beyond the social circles they’d frequented. Once her father had lost the Royal Flush to the Dugal Cartel, however, she saw less of them and had only heard of the divorce in passing.
She smiled at he dog, genuinely this time, and nodded at Ida, “what’s his name? Lulu, Captain and Oscar Wilde,” she introduced her own who were wagging their tails as they waited for her to tell them it was alright to play, which it wasn’t, not in the middle of the sidewalk anyway. “They’re better company anyway. At least I’ve found as much.” Living on her own, with just Hunter as an occasional (reluctant) roommate meant that Winnie’s most consistent company were her dogs, which she didn’t mind.
“I’m good, well, as good as can be with,” she gestured to the sky, as if indicating the mist that hadn’t crept into this part of town yet. “Business has slowed too but that’s to be expected when a third of the town’s displaced. How about yourself? I feel like the pub would be busier now, with people having less to do.”
Ida nodded in response to Winnie’s roll call of her dogs, the juxtaposition in names giving her a little smile as she nodded toward her own. “Eddie. The little guy is TBD. My roommate and i have just been calling him a variety of nicknames until she settles on something, I think,” she informed the woman, with a grin. “I got Eddie after Farishka and I got divorced and, honestly, he was the best thing that could have happened to me. So you won’t find me disagreeing,” she lamented. Winnie didn’t seem like a dog person, necessarily, but it was a fun surprise to learn she was all the same.
Ida followed her hand and nodded in vague agreement with the gesture, understanding it entirely. Only in Grimmbrook, she thought to herself idly, shaking her head a bit. “The bar is...swamped, to say the least.” She agreed with a nod. “I think it’s just a familiar place, you know? People want familiarity right now. Something normal.” She pulled her lips to one side, resigned, and then continued, “So, yeah. Pretty busy. This is a rarity, getting a free morning to myself. I figured I might as well take advantage. Do you take this route normally?”

Once the bucket was refilled Ariela made her way around Ida’s work, using the hose to wash away the remaining soap suds. She shook her head, a curl of wet purple hair sticking to her ear. “He just felt a little bit more sad about Underland’s state of affairs, that’s all. He even wrote down the number and-”
Oh.
Maybe with the sound of moving cars and the speed of the conversation, Ariela may have missed a couple of small details. It wasn’t any skin off her back but Ida’s accusation still managed to bring a blush to her cheeks. She didn’t know why, but it was there anyway. She fell quiet, moving the hose up and down along the side of the car before she felt alright to look Ida’s way again. “I’m sure half those guys had good intentions. Like they really wanted to help. Besides, I doubt any of them knew I was here anyway.” She never really told anyone of her plans, ever. Well, maybe except for Danielle. And Ella, sometimes.
“Now I’m not going to hear anymore of this ‘people flocking like a bunch of chickens’, okay?” And to punctuate her point she veered slightly off her mark, capturing Ida in the line of fire of the hose slightly. “Besides, I’m not the only one drawing a crowd. I’m pretty sure I saw Maggie drive on in earlier, right?”
Tumblr media
Ida tried—and failed—to dodge Ari’s offensive strike, instead getting her shorts soaked in the process, a peal of laughter erupting from her as she got her footing. “Fine!” She acquiesced with a shriek. “Fine! I will no longer point out your obvious charm,” Ida teased, flopping the end of the sponge in the woman’s direction for emphasis, hoping a blob of bubbles might land on her as it was Ida’s only weapon; instead, the cloud of bubbles floated idly for a few seconds before landing sadly on the ground in front of her. She then shook her head, kneeling back down to work on the door of a car, and pursed her lips as she shook her head. “No, no no. We’re not—that’s not a thing.” She insisted. “Maggie is a friend. A dear friend, granted, but that’s all.” If she put a little more oomph into her scrubbing, she hoped Ari didn’t notice. She had never considered having feelings for the woman, despite the slight flirtation that had developed between them; if anything, it seemed as though the woman was out of her league. “What about you?” She pried, attempting to shift the target. “Are you seeing anybody?”

“If I can get him to stop working while we eat, it usually is.” Maggie said with a bit of a laugh. Once she’d had to fish student papers out of Alex’s bag and hide them in his office before he’d actually talked to her about something other than some college student’s lack of essay structure. She was getting pretty good at heading it off by now though.
“There are people still stuck in Underland, too.” Her voice grew sad and not even the sight of a very pretty woman kneeling in front of her could take her mind off of it. They weren’t doing enough. No one was doing enough and she didn’t know where best to help. “Anything I can do, honestly. If I didn’t have to get to work again after lunch I’d join you.”
Maggie’s ears went a bit pink around the edges. “It’s nice to see you, too.”
Tumblr media
Ida smiled at Maggie's sheepish response, always disarmed by seeing such a beautiful, frankly objectively badass woman get a bit silly around her. She wasn't altogether unaware of the slight flirtation that had developed between the two (she had always prided herself on being quite socially adept, as a matter of fact), but always viewed it as harmless, the two of them engaging in the fun parlay as something playful to do, despite Ari's persistent insistence otherwise.
"I just figured whatever we can do to help, you know? There has to be more that we can do than just twiddle our thumbs and wait for people in power to act, since they don't seem likely to do anything anytime soon," Ida mumbled, with a bit of a petulant huff to accompany it.
"Anyway," she said, shaking her head. "How's work? How are you?"

edith--k:
The poor client stared at Edith in disbelief until she pointed the hose at them; they almost shrieked before taking a look around, presumably to find someone to tend to their car. “Yeah, you better run…” she mustered before shifting to her sweet voice. “And have a good day!” The car wash was a success, Ida’s beaming smile told her so. “I’m happy to intimidate whichever self-absorbed resident of Grimmbrook doubts your cause and needs a little push,” a wink. Edith’s decision to help wasn’t exactly selfless, the self doubt in her head had grown too loud so she’d tried to get away from it and focus on something else. “Twenty rounds, whoa, a generous offer that I will not refuse. Especially if the said pub is Midnight,” because she lived nearby. “Listen, you have to promise me something, alright? That you’ll stay hydrated and won’t forget to eat something today,” she glanced down at the water bottle before lowering the hose– the danger passed but she’d keep an eye on it, just in case. “I thought you knew someone and decided to help them,” but knowing the woman had organized an entire event out of the goodness of her heart to help strangers melted Edith’s heart. Add protect Ida Lawson at all cost to her to-do list. “Maybe you could… Drive down there one day?” Edith chewed on her lower lip, realizing it probably hadn’t been the best of ideas. “See if you find someone lurking and maybe they could direct you? I could go with you, if you want. –I can bring the hose, my weapon of choice, to defend us,” she jested.
Tumblr media
Ida giggled at Edith's assertion that she'd do whatever it took to help, including but not limited to soaking someone down if need be, and shook her head. They hadn't know each other long at all, really, but Ida already held a fondness for her, the unapologetic nature she possessed, the way she seemed to genuinely care for people, as evident in her willingness to help out with the car wash, with her concern for Ida's well being. At Edith's command, Ida held up two fingers in a scout's salute, nodding once in firm agreement. "Scout's honor, I will hydrate and refuel as necessary," Ida reassured her, grinning at her worry.
At Edith's suggestion, she narrowed her eyes a bit, biting the inside of her mouth in consideration. "I used to live down there, when I first moved into town." Before she'd met Farishka, before she'd moved into the biggest house she'd ever seen in her life. She'd never gotten the neighborhood's reputation, despite knowing it was home to some of the town's seedier happenings; she moved through Underland safely, got to her apartment soundly, minded her own business. She'd even befriended some of the people in her apartment building. "I don't know if any of my old neighbors are still there, but maybe we could find someone and see if they have any suggestions on what else we can do to help," she idly considered; a car was was a nice effort, but it wouldn't be enough, not by a long shot.
Glancing at Edith and then down to her aforementioned weapon of choice out of the corner of her eye, Ida smirked. "I think so long as we're careful, your hose might not be necessary," she said with a smirk.

isabeldumas:
“Yeah…we had a long conversation about it with a family friend mediating,” she chuckled running her hand through her hair just thinking about the absurdity of it all. Her dad was at peace with the situation and all Mauricio wanted was his daughter to respect that and move on with her life. She couldn’t help but wonder if this decision was out of spite towards her for fraternizing with the enemy as he would like to say. Isabel knew her father had given her the world and the last thing she wanted to do was spend these moments with him bickering and not just enjoying the blessings of still having him around.
“It’s complicated,” she sighed. When her father found out she was dating Casper, to say he was irate was an understatement. For so long he had seen the Du Ponts as the enemy, and reasonably so. However, Isabel didn’t share the same perspective which made him more angry than anything. Mauricio thought his daughter was simply being taking advantage of by Casper in retaliation for her father swinging at him. Isabel didn’t believe it to be true. Not now at least. “They don’t mention the other when I’m around. I just hate being in the middle and just wish they could at least be cordial with one another you know?” The last thing she wanted was to put the two of them into the room and having to pick a side. So for the last few months she never brought up the others name when in the presence of her boyfriend or her father. “I’m so royally fucked.”
Tumblr media
“Hey, no,” Ida argued softly, leaning foward to rest her arms against the bartop. “Don’t say that. We are not declaring anyone or anything royally fucked until we have exhausted all options, okay?” She raised her brows at Isabel for confirmation that she wasn’t giving up on anything, at least not yet. While Ida was no miracle worker, and she surely couldn’t promise that Isabel’s father would change his mind even under the most exigent of circumstances, but she could—and would—be there for the woman when she needed Ida.
“Your dad...your dad loves you. More than anything in the world. We all know that. Anyone who meets him knows that. He wouldn’t be making any decision unless he knew in his heart that it was the right one for him and for you. So maybe he just...needs a little more time to decide, or maybe he...really does want this. In either case, he’s still your dad. And I know that no matter what, you’ll still be a wonderful, wonderful daughter to him. No matter what happens.”
She sighed, then, casting a glance downward for a moment as she thought. “As for him and Casper, honestly, Bel...I think whatever makes you happy is the right thing. And if that’s Casper, then I think it’ll work out, you know? It might...it might not be easy, but I think you’ll figure it out.”

“Go easy there, my ego might start liking the way you stroke it,” Sophia playfully replied, wiggling her brows at the girl across from her. Truth is she was extremely proud of her grades in the last 6 months; it made the move feel worth it a hundred times over. It was great of course being with her cousins again but this was something she’d done all on her own and no one could take it away from her. It only encouraged her to keep going, to perhaps even graduate top of her year, something she’d never been quite so driven towards before. God help her when she was finished her degree and had to find something else to push her.
“Analysing law speeches from the 4th century Greeks. Looking at the economics and relationships governed by the Athenians at the time. Basically old school divorce court and taxes.” It was fascinating to tell the truth to see how people lived so long ago and yet how alike to the current times it could be. She’d just finished analyzing a bunch of speeches that had survived by Isocrates for her current paper, where she was analyzing his stance on education and uniting states beyond racial boundaries. It would be nice to look into something a little more trivial like what they would use as tax or alimony at the time.
“So, how much are you hoping to raise?” Sophia stretched out a little on the desk, resting her cheek in her open palm as she rests her elbow on the wooden table. “You could also do a food drive or something where physical items can be dropped off; cash isn’t the only thing needed right?” Again, Sophia wished she had spare to give but then she’d be the one struggling and in need of help. At least she could help Ida plan.
Ida batted her eyelashes innocently at Sophia's assertion that she might be stroking her ego, that being her entire objective; Sophia worked hard, harder than almost Ida knew, and she deserved to be lauded for it, in Ida's opinion. When Sophia informed her of her next subject, that point was beyond well-proven. Ida nodded, increasing in enthusiasm when Sophia broke it down for her in simple layman's terms (she was all too familiar with divorce court). She grinned, then, gazing over the top of her laptop with admiration, and told her, "I absolutely cannot wait to hear what you manage to spin from that. It sounds like a trove of good content."
Ida, putting the finishing touches on her list of details, admitted, "honestly I'll be relieved to get anything, so I'm not really sure how how to set my sights, but I'm gonna do some research." She hadn't done a car wash since she was in a cheerleading uniform, so she wasn't necessarily well versed in how much they made or even what to charge, but she knew she could do it, and any money made was something. Still, this would be somewhat of an undertaking. "What do you say we call it a day for now, at least? You can give your brain a rest and I can..." Ida glanced at the corner of her laptop screen, checking the time, before finishing with mock enthusiasm. “Get excited to go to work!”

Ariela smiled gratefully as she set the bucket on the ground and began to refill it.

“Hey, no life saving here. I’m just happy to help. Honestly it’s been nice getting outside for more than a few hours. Before today I was starting to feel like a dying house plant.” She shuddered lightly in jest though it was the truth. As much as she loved her workplace, which probably had everything to do with Ida and Ella’s company, nothing but the darker confines of The Midnight Pub for days on end had only managed to make the itch to do something, anything other than take drink orders and chit chat with the regulars that much stronger. If it had been any longer, she didn’t know what she would have done. Maybe she would have just jumped in a car herself and skipped town for a couple days. Who knew?
“Ooh, I think I might just hold you to that. You know what I’ve been missing? Home cooking. There was this guy in a beamer a little while ago that mentioned this Mexican place that apparently has the best sopa de lima. He wrote it down for me… somewhere.” She only hoped that the note hadn’t gotten soaked along with the rest of her things.
“Oh, you mean that guy that gave you a very generous tip?” Ida ribbed, throwing Ari a look to convey her teasing. She refocused on scrubbing, making sure she didn’t miss a spot, as she continued, “I’m pretty sure he was looking to make you some sopa de lima,” Ida parroted, having no actual idea what it was. But if Ariela said it was delicious, she had no doubt it likely was.
It was nice to get out and enjoy time together away from the bar, free from the smell of hops and french fries and out in the open air; the idea that she and Ariela should spend more time together when she wasn’t acting as her technical manager flitted through Ida’s mind as she worked, and she smiled at it fondly. “Seriously, you have had half these guys wrapped around your finger all day. I’m pretty sure they’re just coming for you, at this point.”

edith--k:
Edith was about to make a paper plane out of a flyer she randomly picked up at the University library when two key words on it captured her attention and prompted her to unfold it and give it a better look. Underland. Images of the affected area flashed before her eyes and she swallowed a lump in her throat. Car wash. A bit random but the woman could see how it was the fastest and the most effective way to raise money. A few days later, there she was with a bandana in her hair and even had a pair of sunglasses on too. It wasn’t exactly practical but it was easier to be charming when there weren’t any dark circles under her eyes to intimidate people around her.  Speaking of, so far Edith hadn’t had a chance to talk to Ida, the brilliant mind behind it all, as she was the busiest woman there. Three hours in, it hit Edith she’d never get Ida alone so she decided to step in with a bottle of water in hand. They were all soaked, naturally, but staying hydrated was something else. Ida was with a potential client, asking them if they were interested and Edith’s initial reaction was picking up a hose next to her. “If you say no, I’ll have to hose you down.”
Tumblr media
She kept a straight face for a moment longer for them before cracking a smile to let them know she was joking. Or was she? “Even though my cheeks hurt from all the smiling, I have to say you two did an excellent job.” The woman remarked, handing over the bottle, her grin lingering for another moment before she took a look around. “Is anyone from Underland here?”
Ida hadn’t anticipated any extra hands for the event—hell, she was prepared to make it happen alone if she had to—but the way the community had assembled to help Underland was nothing short of inspiring to her, particularly when it granted her the opportunity to meet entire strangers willing to assist. Edith had been a savior, stepping in when Ida needed a hand and never once complaining, though Ida knew firsthand that washing people’s cars wasn’t necessarily the definition of a thrilling time. She chuckled softly at the woman’s faux threat (though, if she were being honest, she had the impression that Edith wouldn’t be beyond spraying whomever might need it), and smiled at her gratefully as she got to work on the car before them.
“That means a lot,” Ida retorted, entirely genuine. The idea had seemed so quick she feared it might be a bit half-assed, so she was ectastic it was getting any business at all. “We would be nowhere without your help today, though. Thank you. Seriously. The next...twenty rounds at the pub are on me,” Ida reassured her, grinning up at her. At Edith’s question, she glanced around. “I haven’t seen anybody. At least no one I recognize. I guess that’s my next step after this, figuring out where to funnel the money into, you know? How do you...determine who needs it most? I can’t believe there’s no official foundation set up to help these people.”
