Which symmetry group to use (II)?
One of my students, Casey, had an excellent question: “Is there a way to know which pattern I’d want to use before actually starting the drawing?” In other words, which symmetry group to choose when you have something specific in mind. Continue reading Which symmetry group to use (II)?

Carnaval tessellation 2
Colourful topic yet wicked undertones. The Carnaval in Venice, plague masks and having read Dan Brown’s book Inferno, were the seeds that inspired this striking tessellation. Continue reading Untitled

To all the Hairdressers I've Met
I'm surprised at all the hair I've drawn over the years. A collection of hair heavy tessellations, for the hairdressers that have made me feel nice, after a long overdue cut. Signed, Sasquatch.
To all the Hairdressers I’ve Met. Thank you for making me feel nice. Although. I’m not a fan of stainless steel instruments flying around my head at fifty miles an hour (it seems), sharp or not. In this category, obviously, hairdressers, but also dentists. I have yet to do a dentist tessellation, but have many hair related tessellations. Here goes. Continue reading Untitled

Call and Response Tessellation Series
An ongoing visual Call and Response series between two Canadian Tessellation Artists. Jason Panda and Francine Champagne. Enjoy!
Two Canadian tessellation artists. There aren’t that many of us. One in Ontario, the other in BC. No, we have never met, other than through social media and texting. Through these platforms we have learned about many other tessellation artists around the globe. I think Escher would have been impressed with all these artists, influenced by his work. Even corresponding, learning and collaborating…

2023 International Women's Day Tessellation
Celebrating International Women's Day 2023, I present to you, in tessellation form of course, my hero "Marjorie Rice and Her Tessellating Pentagon Discoveries".
On the forefront this year for sure, #IWD2023, March 8th. Two fronts actually. Two shows in Victoria (Canada) and my dueling inspiration, a game of tag with Jason Panda on Instagram. The first instance, a show at the Victoria Arts Council, I wrote about in a previous post. A juried show with the IWD premise celebrated for the whole of March, workshops, talks, conversations, panel discussions and…

Take the NEW tessellation class and leave a review!
This class introduces and explains in depth, the fourth symmetry operation, the glide reflection. It was one of M.C. Escher's favourites, having accomplished 25 drawings using this symmetry method.
In the previous five classes we learned the first three symmetry methods used in creating nested shape tessellations and patterns. Mirror, rotation and translation. This class introduces and explains in depth, the fourth symmetry operation, the glide reflection. It was one of M.C. Escher’s favourites, having accomplished 25 drawings using this symmetry method. … use this link to get a month of…

Image Resolution Question
Image resolution is not an easy topic to understand. DPI and PPI, image quality and print quality explained.
I had a question about resolution in KaleidoPaint this morning (reprinted below). If KP exports at 72 DPI, how do you get a good quality print, let’s say 300 DPI? An excellent question, and one concept that is not easily understood. But once you get it, it will stick with you for your whole artist’s career. (more…)
