Cozy Gaming?
You may be wondering what are cozy games? Cozy games have become increasingly more popular over the years, especially with female gamers. Cozy games are meant to be relaxing. They often have community and are self paced games. Some popular examples are Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Cooking Mama. This is one of my favorite genres because it is easy to play for a long time and I enjoy playing with others as well. I often find that these games are more popular with women and are also good for children. Cozy games are often farming simulators, cooking games, makeup/clothing games, etc. There is a cozy game out there for everyone. Find you a comfortable set up and enjoy playing for hours!

Game Review: Animal Crossing
Animal crossing is a beloved popular cozy games that has been around for a long time. There are 12 different versions of the game with the most popular being Animal Crossing New Leaf, Animal Crossing City Folk, and Animal Crossing New Horizons. New Horizons came out in 2020 and has been popular ever since. In this game you are a running an island full of villagers. You are trying to build your island up and its status in order for your villagers to have a nice place to live and in hopes of booking a musical artist named K.K. Slider. Some of the main things you can do is fish, chop down trees, swim, grow flowers, grow fruits and vegetables, decorate your house and the island, buy and sell items, visit other people’s islands, and build things. All of your villagers are animal villagers that have their own personalities and there are 488 possible villagers. But don’t fret if you have one you don’t like, because they can move out and another will move in or you can villager hunt for a new one and request them to come live on your island. Overall, I would rate this game a 9/10. I enjoy the fact that you can play with other people online. It is super entertaining and you never run out of things to do!

Are video games impacting the behavior of kids and teens?
A big debate I have seen on social media and even the news lately is whether video games are affecting people’s real life behaviors. Many people believe that video games result in poor social skills, lower grades, being overweight, and aggressive thoughts and behaviors. I think this can be avoided depending on the age you begin gaming, the amount of time spent, and parenting. These issues can be helped by parents monitoring their children by limiting their screen time, checking grades, encouraging being active, etc. They also aid in teaching their child right from wrong and reality versus fantasy. I think parents play a big role in teaching their child empathy, how to distinguish what is real versus fake, and how you should treat others. On the flip side, video games have also been shown to improve accuracy and problem solving. Do you think video games are negatively or positively affecting kids and teens? Or do you not agree with either? I’d love to know your thoughts!

Debate: The Book vs. The Movie
Many famous movies and tv shows that you know and love are based off of books. Some major examples are Twilight, Hunger Games, 13 Reasons Why, etc. Two very recent ones you may have watched are Leave the World Behind and The Color Purple. While many people love both the books and the tv adaptions, there is always a debate about which is better. Some people are very loyal to the book and dislike when any little detail is changed for the movie. Other people don’t mind the artistic changes. I tend to fall somewhere in the middle. If I read the books first then watch the movies, I tend to be more critical. However, if I watch the movie/tv show first then go to the books it just feels like more content to enjoy. How do you feel about movie/tv adaptions? Do you think they typically do the books justice?

Book Spotlight: Hidden Pictures
During the end of 2023 I made an effort to start reading more books and trying out new genres. I typically tend to stick with young adult, romance, and fantasy. So around Halloween time J had the idea to read a horror or true crime book to have some holiday spirit. I picked through some books but landed on a book called Hidden Pictures by Jason Rukulak Ironically, I didn’t end up getting into the book until way after Halloween was over, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. The book is about a young woman that starts babysitting a young boy for a wealthy family in the suburbs but weird spooky things start happening around the child. I don’t want to put out spoilers but the book is not at all what it seems. It had a major plot twist and is much less scary than i initially thought. There is no gore or anything that can be a major trigger. I truly enjoyed it and I believe if you are looking to read something in a new genre that you should give this one a try!

Have you heard of decision based games?
There are many different genre of games out there but have you ever heard of decision based games? They are games that have multiple different plots and the storyline is affected by choices that the player makes. This has been one of my favorite genres to get into lately. Every player can finish the game with a different outcome. I like that these games involve a little bit more thought than others. Every decision counts even some that seem insignificant. You also usually are able to walk around the world and explore. Missing something they intended you to find can also affect your storyline. Two good decision games I have played and would recommend are Life is Strange and Until Dawn. It’s also interesting to watch other people play the game and get a different outcome than you. You can do this by watching other players stream or on youtube. Happy gaming!

How to support small local authors.
Today, social media is one of the main ways to get information out to people. Many books blow up in popularity and the word is spread through different outlets such as X, TikTok, Facebook, etc. However, these trendy books and authors seem to drown out the smaller writers making it difficult for them to get the word out for their books. There are many different ways we can support small local authors. A good way to start is by following local authors you enjoy on their social media platforms. Another way you can help is by posting/reposting about their books and helping to spread the word. Telling your family and/or peers in person (word of mouth) about the author and their work is another helpful way to support. There are events for local authors that you can look out for and attend. You can review their books online. Lastly, many bookstores have sections for small local authors. Going out of your way to buy and try out these books is also a good way to show support. Some of the books are even signed and who knows if the author is going to blow up later!

A new version of Minecraft?!
Minecraft is a popular survival/building game that first hit the scene in 2009. The game was a major success and has inspired several spin offs since then. The newest of the Minecraft games is Minecraft Legends. I have always loved the original game so I thought I’d give this game a try. Instead of surviving in the regular never ending world players are used to, you are battling the piglets invading the world from the Nether. The main differences in this game is you focus on building your own troops, ordering those troops around, combat, and collecting items. I enjoyed this game for the most part. I typically am not a combat player, but if you are this version of Minecraft is for you. With it now dropping from $60 to around $40, it is definitely worth the price!

What is #BookTok?
Ever seen the words #BookTok before and wasn’t quite sure what that meant? TikTok has taken over the social media scene and is a place where you can be exposed to numerous different communities and sides of the internet. #BookTok is the corner of TikTok where all different types of book connoisseurs come together to share their book recommendations and review popular books. #BookTok has become such an influential place on the internet that there is even sections under the title in bookstores like Barnes and Nobles. One thing about me is I like trends and usually like to see what everyone is talking about, so I have read numerous #BookTok recommendations. Some books that I discovered on there and recommended giving a try are A Court of Thorns and Roses, Hidden Pictures, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Those are all vastly different books, and that’s what I love about the book community on TikTok. There is recommendations and reviews for every genre imaginable and you can find creators with similar taste to you. If you are ever in a reading rut and want to find a book, I highly suggest scrolling through this hashtag and seeing what you can find!

Prioritizing hobbies all 2024!
Ever since I was a child, I have had a passion for reading. English was always my favorite subject and I never minded having to read for homework. In high school, I often finished a book a week and loved to visit the library during my free period. However, between playing my sport, working, and spending time with my family/friends, the time I spent reading dwindled down drastically. At the end of 2023, I started to get back into the habit of reading again, but in 2024 I’d like to take it a step further. I want to prioritize reading this year by reading and reviewing at least 2 books a month. I also plan to get out of my reading comfort zone by trying out new genres. I’d love to discuss all things books whether that is what I am currently reading, something I have read in the past, chatting about popular trending books, etc. I also game a little here and there and plan on sharing about that as well. I am excited to share this experience with everyone!
