i’ve started seriously listening to nirvana and i am having Thoughts about weird al’s parody “smells like nirvana“
throughout nirvana’s nevermind album there’s this repeated idea of not understanding what the songs are about.
i.e. in bloom: “he’s the one who likes all our pretty songs // and he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun // but he don’t know what it means, don’t know what it means”
on a plain: “somewhere i have heard this before // in a dream my memory has stored // as a defense i’m neutered and spayed // what the hell am i trying to say? // it is now time to make it unclear // to write off lines that don’t make sense”
al said he was a huge fan of nirvana before even thinking of doing the parody. i bet he also obsessively listened to nevermind (just like i’m doing rn hehe) and picked up on this theme.
what makes “smells like nirvana“ different from al’s previous parodies is that it ridicules the artist itself rather than some other subject matter. and you could bring up “it’s still billy joel to me” but al to this day is still embarrassed about billy joel himself hearing that.
so why did al think it was okay to do a parody making fun of nirvana? on the surface level, you could just say that al assumed that they had a good sense of humour. but how would he know that really? and if by chance they didn’t, i’m sure as a huge fan he didn’t want to offend them just by suggesting the idea.
what if al thought “smells like nirvana” was okay to do because he recognized this repeated idea in nevermind about not understanding the songs?
love seeing the aftershocks of this year's eurovision because let's be real no one gives a shit about Loreen and her "Tattoo" (I literally just had to look the song name up) but TO THIS DAY I see people doing insane shit to that Käärijä guy's cervix on the trending tab. woobifying the shit out of that man kpop stan style. you can rig the jury vote but you can't rig tumblrinas' hearts.
