the 2010s culture of weirdly entertaining queerbaity shows is alive in ukraine of all places. if you ever yearn for merlin-esque vibes, let me introduce you to this show called “cossacks. the fairy tale that never was”, also known as “cossacks. an absolutely phoney story”, “cossacks. a totally fake tale” and “cossacks. an absolutely fake story” (they never decided on a title translation and just kept coming up with more). it’s a clearly underbudgeted ukrainian historical show that came out in 2020, and it has everything. rivals to “are they lovers? worse” male leads with homoerotic tension, who either try to kill one another or call each other petnames. a girl who lives in her medieval ukrainian version of the truman show and gets caught up in a shitty love triangle. a 4’10 wizard who can turn into a shark (he just doesn’t want to). tragic siblings. poisoning as a love language. the main ship is called wolfborshch. one of the scriptwriters seems to have vanished from the earth, i can’t find any info on him anywhere.
this show is frustratingly entertaining. it has a VERY badly dubbed trailer on youtube, and there are all the episodes in original too. the subbed version is on netflix (might need ukrainian vpn, not sure tho) and some other platforms i didn’t know existed before. i’m not saying you should watch it, it is a mediocre show, but i am saying it would be very funny if it suddenly gained a fandom. me, the gal who’s been making thirst traps of nazar and ivan on tiktok and like three other people would be incredibly pleased

"The children have just begun to live. We feel sorry for our country, they (russins) are killing us and no one is doing anything."
Locals have been bringing flowers and toys to the site in Kryvyi Rih since morning where children were killed in a russian attack on April 4. Nine children were killed in a russian Iskander missile strike. Six remain in hospitals, most of them in serious condition.

The last peaceful summer for the EU?
Experts believe Russia's attack on Lithuania is possible as early as this fall. This could be our last peaceful summer, — BILD.
Russia announced large-scale exercises in Belarus. The Baltic countries are concerned that during these exercises, Russian Armed Forces may cross the border.
It adds up to the earlier announcement of Poland + Baltics pulling out of the Treaties for non-use of anti-personel mines and starting to build defensive fortification lines on their borders with Russia and Belarus.

STOP SUPPORTING rUSSIAN CULTURE, there's nothing exciting about it, they killed and tortured millions of people throughout their history, to present themselves as that "great" nation, of course the'll seem like that, when there's no one else left.
CULTURE IS POLITICS

Three years ago was Mariupol Theatre.
We still do not know for sure how many people died there. Mainly children and their parents. Something around 600 people? 1000? I dunno. A lot.
Some russian pilot saw word "CHILDREN" written outside and decided it was a perfect place to bomb. Just like they did with maternity hospital. And other places that mainly housed civilians who were unable or unwilling to leave their city (because it was their home, you know)
...
Honestly, I cannot think of something smart to say. I feel kinda numb. I remember that day. I was in Czech. A few days after I saw a memorial outside.
Here it is

I dunno. I just. I cannot forgive. It's not like anybody is asking for forgivness though. Almost every night in Ukraine is a night of terror. And occupied territories do not know peace at all, it seems.

Anyway not including Ukraine in talks of ending the war and saying Ukraine just needs to give up territory is making you Chamberlain to Hitler. Like. That's... that's what you're doing. It's really not hyperbole right now. If you legitimately believe Putin will be happy being able to keep some land, we've got one huge example in history where that just ain't the case. Think for two seconds about why the invasion. Because 1) hatred of Ukrainians and 2) want as much land as possible (legitimately how do you think russia got so big?).
There is no such thing as a benevolent dictator. We do not bow to the dictator.

Taken in Donetsk in 1932-33, this photograph shows a “kulak” woman and her small child being evicted from their home in winter, dispossessed of everything but a small wagonload of their belongings pulled by hand behind them. Photo by Marko Zhelizniak.
This is the people tankies would want you to believe had the Marie Antoinette level of luxury. I wonder how many carts like those would be required to transport everything an average western tankie owns.

Dear US Americans, your statesman and national security advisor, Keith Kellogg, just compared dealing with Ukrainians - a nation under attack, defending against a much larger enemy - to abusing an animal. Just letting you know.

"Many suggest donating to the UA army, which is extremely valuable and we appreciate it.
A very important addition though, which, unlike donating, is something we, non-Americans cannot do: hold your govt accountable. Protest. Resist to MAGA usurping power and betraying US partners"

and you know what, i get it, i get that a european or canadian or australian official can not just go on stage and say "hey comfortable western burgher, we may need you to go stand close to a war soon," not least because right wing asshats will jump at the opportunity to say "ah see, they want you to go to war, why don't you vote for us instead and stay comfy with your clocks and cabbages" which won't do anyone good either, and i get that the western burgher is unwilling and unready just as most ukrainians were up until the first bomb dropped, but i simply don't have any sympathy left for them, because they're sowing the wind right now, and ukraine will be reaping the whirlwind before they do. we already are, in fact

Tumblr seems fond of the Ukrainian "living is hard, dying would be a pity", so here's another part of Ukrainian vernacular that you guys might also like. This one is new and developed in 2022.
I would like to introduce it to you in the following context: it was August 2022, I returned to Ukraine for the first time since evacuating in March and was going through baby's first in a while air raid (in Odesa). I texted my best friend, who never left Kyiv, saying that I'm scared to go to sleep in case I wake up having died of a missile or whatever. She put on her very best Yoda face and bestowed upon me the following:
"1. Їбане так їбане." (Yibane tak yibane).
Now, this is extremely hard to explain, but I will try, to the best of my ability.
So, the basic meaning of it is: "If it strikes, it strikes". However, the verb for "strike" here is derived from the profane root word which basically means "to fuck". So a closer stylistic choice would be, "If it fucks you up, it fucks you up", or "If your ass gets struck, your ass gets struck". This is usually spoken before the person decides to ignore the air raid, set aside the feeling of impending doom and go to sleep.
That wasn't the end:
"2. І взагалі навряд чи їбане. (But in general it probably won't.)
3. Але якщо їбане - так їбане. (But if it strikes, then it strikes)."
That night I slept like a baby and didn't, in fact, wake up dead.
So if you are currently dealing with the impending doom around horrors you have no control over, take the wisdom of Ukrainians who have been grappling with horrors beyond comprehension for over three years now (some longer):
Їбане так їбане.
І взагалі навряд чи їбане.
Go to sleep.

I think I'll just start simply reposting tweets from time to time to show what I'd like to say, instead of writing everything on my own. [2]
