This Semester...

This semester I am trying to finally accomplish getting my Associates. I used to go to the University of Central Florida but last semester I transferred home to FIU. I struggled with combining work and school schedules and as a result, my grades suffered. Because I know I am capable of better, I’ve done it before, it is my goal to do my best. 

Within in this class, I’m most enthusiastic about stretching my writing muscles again. I feel like I have lost some of my ability to write since leaving high school as it was something I used to win contests with in the past. I am hoping that my time management is more prioritized and that I can make it to class on time despite the Palmetto Expressway traffic.

My Writing

I’m very proud to say that my writing has won me a few competitions. I once won a writing contest hosted by a national hunting association and was featured on their website. More recently, when I was applying for colleges, I entered a scholarship contest and won a sizable amount of money that made my freshman year just a tad more tolerable...

 Although, I’ll be the first to admit that my writing is not as good as it once was. I find myself struggling with a few things: spelling, staying on task, and brainstorming. Some of my strengths include appealing to my audience with humor and writing creatively.

Education and Career Goals

I graduated from Christopher Columbus High School Class of 2014. From there I went to Orlando to attend The University of Central Florida as a part of the pre-Med program. Last year I decided to switch my major to Architecture and that decision led me to transfer to here FIU! My goal is graduate with a degree in Architecture and then to focus on sustainable structures and living with nature in an integrated way.

Who am I?? Details included...

Hi there! My name is Felix Sanchez and it’s nice to meet you. Out here on the internet... Where I can’t see you... Anyways, I guess I should tell you about myself? 

I was born on August 2 in this beautiful city of Miami. I’m a Leo, if you believe in that kinda thing. 

Growing up in Hialeah was like growing up on an episode of Que Pasa U.S.A. My family taught me life lessons like:

if they aren’t listening you aren’t shouting loud enough

cafecito is drunk at the very least twice a day

at Noche Buena, if you can get some of the ear then you’re doing it right

never trust a paper bag thrown in the middle of the street

I love the outdoors. On the weekends, you’ll probably find me out on the water on a kayak or paddleboard or hiking a trail. There’s just something about cool crisp air filling up my lungs that always gets to me. My family is very outdoorsy. We spend every summer at our house in the Florida Keys and every fall in the somewhere in the woods.

Growing up my dad introduced me to hunting and all of the intricacies of partaking in nature’s cycle. In 2007, I joined him on a trip of a lifetime. We flew to New Zealand where I saw the most beautiful vistas I never would have thought existed. It was like living a dream.

Artsy Fartsy and Stuff Like That

Grade school gave me a foundation in art. One that is still very important to me to this day. I like finding the hidden messages and meaning behind things and art has allowed me an outlet in that. 

Vincent Van Gogh is my favorite of the impressionist masters. I identify with his love of the natural world and the way normal life looks. My favorite of his pieces is the Blossoming Almond Tree series. 

My love for art doesn’t stop with just still life. I absolutely love movie, television, music (especially vinyl), and comic books. 

My favorite movie is Nausicca and the Valley of The Wind; the “start of Studio Ghibli”. With its beautiful hand drawn animation, equally beautiful score, and environmental message it always manages to make me notice something new and give me goosebumps.

In terms of music, I’m all over the place. As long as it can make me tilt my head, I’ll like it; yes, even country. I’m especially into vinyl. Curating a personal record collection has really opened up my ear to all the different sounds that are out there.
