a post-doc was doing a guest seminar at my institute and at the beginning of his presentation he was explaining why he chose birds for his evolutionary analysis - so he said "well first of all, because birds are the best and most interesting animals and it's fun to study them" and a few professors in the room gave him a very serious nod

I have no idea what is and isn’t considered common knowledge, so I have a tendency to start stories like “So you know how [hyper-specific niche life event that a handful of people in the world are aware of]” or “Are you familiar with the concept of moving pictures? Sometimes referred to as ‘films’ or ‘movies’?”

my deeply problematic ecology opinion is that sometimes we should put species in new places on purpose beyond just 'reintroducing to range of [within past 100 years].' ecosphere's haunted. put cheetahs back in the north american midwest. cultivate joshua trees and their moths further north on purpose to match climate patterns. other stuff that i don't know about because i mostly know north american ecology. the world is crowded by the bad decisions of the past. make some questionable contemporary ones.

A thing I love to do is telling prepper dudes that one of my disaster readiness skills is making stuffed animals. They never get it. Like, my dude, when things get very bad and we're all sharing overcrowded shelters, you're gonna want the power to comfort children. Trust me.
