A technology initially used to fight traffic fines is now helping refugees with legal claims.
When Joshua Browder developed DoNotPay he called it “the world’s first robot lawyer”. It’s a chatbot - a computer program that carries out conversations through texts or vocal commands - and it uses Facebook Messenger to gather information about a case before spitting out advice and legal documents.
It was originally designed to help people wiggle out of parking or speeding tickets. But now Browder - a 20-year-old British man currently studying at Stanford University - has adapted his bot to help asylum seekers.
In the US and Canada, it’s helping refugees complete immigration applications, and in the UK, it can aid asylum seekers in obtaining financial support from the government.

Had an interesting chat with John Hicken, director of tech startup Solomon, this morning at a the equity crowdfunding event organised by TechNorth in Wakefield. I had noticed this new data sharing dashboard/platform a few months ago but they now have a champion in the form of LeedsBID. John showed me their innovative bin sensor that is being tested in Leeds at the moment. The huge potential of making sense of the data that we now have access to and will get access to in the future needs innovations like Solomon to help process it and present it in a digestible form.
WakefieldBID is currently seeking sign up from businesses in the Wakefield city centre and this could really help to cement the value of the BID in a tangible way.

Working with stock footage is a test of ‘authenticity’. Clients have a nose for the staged set up even when they are not confident to comment on any other aspect of an edit.
The video with Daisy Lowe is great! Bin bags!

Visual immersion isn’t enough? Our dream state doesn’t require you to be physically stimulated to be immersive. Perhaps we should be exploring alpha states of mind to achieve more immersive experiences?

Collaborating with Alex
I’ve been introduced to a bright young man through the Talent City project I’m working on who has recently qualified in a Film Studies degree. I’m hoping to make good use of his talents in every part of the production but mostly on set as another pair of hands and eyes. He has already made ihs contribution apparent by alerting me to the idea that this film has a wider audience than just its target of key funders and supporters. When he asked me where it is going to be shown he made me realise that “online” wasn’t really a good or thorough enough answer. I look forward to giving him some much desired experience and getting a real contribution to the film in return. Here’s to collaboration!

Making work for young people with ASD
Today I met with Kerry, one of several job coaches with the Talent City project, helping young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders to get real world work experience.
It’s a horrifying fact that only 6% of people with ASD find work and there is a generation whose lives are being blighted by not finding the expression and connection in society that they would like to have. The Talent City scheme is run by Lighthouse Futures Trust in Leeds to change this and give everybody the opportunity to benefit from the contribution to the world of work that these young people can give.
