Putting together my portfolio website part one

Slouched over my desk feeling a lot like Micah in this drawing right now. I have SO (and I cannot stress this enough) MUCH to do. It's my final university module and I currently have about a week left to complete a growing list of tasks that I will graciously spare you from.
Let's get straight into the web building.
I'm using Readymag for this, which I am finding needs a little research to get going but once I had the shortcuts down it got nice and simple. I wanted a very playful looking landing page, similar to a few artists' I looked at before.

Anna Shepeta's site especially is beautiful and I took a lot of inspiration from it!
Sketching out my home page ideas, I wanted to either go with a very cosy interactive studio or map design. I ended up choosing to illustrate the studio because I feel as though letting potential clients get to know me more deeply in this way, seeing 'behind the curtain', is a nice way to sell myself straight off the bat.
I created a proper illustration to act as the main page:

Of course, since I needed to have each object be clickable, I had to separate the background from the foreground elements, and even create some shapes to add the 'glow' effect upon hovering the mouse.

Speaking of the mouse, I also made a custom cursor. This was heavily inspired by the Wii remote cursor, since I always find gamelike elements suit me and my style well.
I ran into some trouble when trying to link elements, and activate animations on hover when I had added a few separate images that overlapped, and so had to look into the troubleshooting forums. One user had suggested an easy fix though, which solved everything- adding transparent images on top.

After fixing that, I could easily link each clickable object to its subsequent page, and link the blog section to this one. That's pretty meta!
I will be returning when I figure out how to put together a nice portfolio section.
