Appalachian Folklore, Wives Tales, and Superstitions
Brought to you mostly by my grandparents, but also by my family at large. These are all things I heard growing up in the northern region of Appalachia and wanted to share with y'all. The lore and sayings may vary based on location, family tradition, and other factors, but this is just what Iâm sharing from my experiences!
⢠Give the first pinch of a freshly baked loaf of bread to the Good Men to keep them happy. ⢠Deaths and births always come in threes. ⢠Spin around in a circle three times before you walk in the front door to confuse any spirits that are following you. ⢠Donât throw your hair out! If a bird builds a nest with it, youâll have migraines. ⢠âRed sky at night, sailorâs delight. Red sky at morning, sailorâs warning.â ⢠If the leaves on trees are flipped over with their backsides showing, rainâs coming. ⢠If you hear a dog howl at night, death is coming. ⢠If youâre giving someone a wallet or purse as a present, put money in it to ensure theyâll never financially struggle. ⢠Spirits canât cross running water. ⢠Cats and dogs wonât enter a room where spirits are present. ⢠Carry an acorn in your pocket for good luck, a penny for prosperity, and a nail for protection. ⢠If youâre having nightmares, put a Bible under your pillow. Theyâll go away. ⢠Take a spoonful of honey to keep your words sweet. ⢠Keeping a pot of coffee on ensures a happy home. ⢠Itâs bad luck to walk over a grave. ⢠A horseshoe hung above a door ensures good luck. ⢠A horseshoe in the bedroom staves away nightmares. ⢠If your right hand itches, youâll soon be receiving money. If the left itches, youâll be paying it. ⢠Wishing on a star works. âStar light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.â ⢠When you have a random shiver, someone just walked over your grave. ⢠If smoke from a fire rises, expect clear skies. If it rolls along the ground, expect storms. ⢠Rosemary near the door provides protection. Lavender provides peace. ⢠âA ring around the sun or moon, rain or snow is coming soon.â ⢠Wind chimes and bells keep spirits away. ⢠Seeing a cardinal means unexpected company. ⢠For that matter, so does dropping silverware. ⢠Rubbing a bit of potato on a wart helps it to go away. ⢠If the soles of your feet itch, you will soon walk on strange grounds. ⢠Black eyed peas, greens, and/or pork and sauerkraut should be eaten on New Yearâs Day to welcome good luck and good fortune. ⢠Driving a nail into a bedframe or crib will drive away curses. ⢠If your ears are burning, someoneâs talking about you. ⢠If you dream of fish, you are or will soon be pregnant. ⢠Listen to the wisdom of children, they see and know more than we think. ⢠To dream of death means birth, to dream of birth means death. ⢠To cure a headache, crush some mint leaves in your hands, cup them over your mouth and nose, and breathe in a few times. It should help. ⢠Placing a fern or ivy on the front porch protects against curses. ⢠In a vegetable garden, never plant the same plants in the same spot two years in a row. Rotate where they are, and youâll save your soil. (Note: this is a real thing called crop rotation, and is actually kind of important) ⢠A black bird (Raven or crow, doesnât matter) on the roof or a windowsill is an omen for death. To avoid it, you have to scare it away without using your voice before it caws. ⢠Say a prayer when you pass a coal mine for the lost souls still in the mine. ⢠Thank the land and the Lord with every successful hunt or harvest you have, for nothing is guaranteed.
These are a few of the folklores, wivesâ tales, superstitions, and sayings that Iâve heard growing up (and still living in) in Appalachia! I encourage other Appalachian witches, cunning folk, and general inhabitants of the Appalachian region (and just the mountain range at large) to share whatever bits youâve heard over the years! I just wanted to share a bit with y'all to give you an insight into some Appalachian lore, my own practice, and maybe give you some things to research and incorporate into your own practice! đżâ¨

tips for bonding with the sky
Moon go outside at night, even if itâs just on your balcony. be aware of moon phases and use them in your spell work or monthly routine. on the full moon, take advantage of the extra light to go on a hike or walk at nighttime. or take the time to do some extra divination. charge or cleanse your magickal tools in the moonlight. make the moon a member of your witchy family by talking to her, or praying to her. make an altar for the moon or a moon deity. make art of or about the moon. carry around moonstone or other lunar symbolism.
Sun do sun meditations as often as possible. spend time in the sunlight and be active, try hiking or swimming. start a garden, particularly sun related plants such cacti or sunflowers. make sun tea or make and cook in a solar oven. wear warm colors such as yellow, orange, and red. make an altar to the sun or a sun deity, outside altars or window altars would be great for this. use stones such as amber, obsidian, or sandstone. eat or work with fruit, especially citrus. compost. use happy music as a source of light. hang up a sun catcher in your window.
Stars familiarize yourself with constellations and astronomical events, such as meteor showers. get a telescope or binoculars for a better look. try to travel to somewhere with less light pollution or go to a planetarium. Learn about stellar mythology - the myths behind âOrionâ or âCassiopeiaâ for example. become comfortable with nocturnal animals (just donât get near any wild ones). start logging your dreams and interpreting them. learn to simple sleep spells.
Clouds learn to predict the weather from the clouds. put up wind chimes, wind socks or pinwheels outside. spend time near fresh water, such as creeks or ponds, on sunny days. make cloud related diyâs. take photos of the sky, draw or paint them. learn about folklore or mythology of clouds, wind, or rain.
Storm collect rainwater for spellwork. do rain grounding by running around on rainy days and getting wet all over. make an altar for storms or a storm deity. pay attention to storm omens. make art about storms, water colors can be associated with rain. use the days when you are stuck inside to practice kitchen witchcraft or other indoor crafts. treat stormy days as a chance to take care of yourself and your home.

A list of Witchy Video Games
Listen, when you donât have the resources, space, or time to practice your craft like you want to, try these nature-based video games!
â¨Animal Crossing ~ For garden witchcraft, interior design, and receiving encouraging messages from cute lil animals :) Very relaxing and wholesome!
â¨Stardew Valley ~ Wow, this game does it all. ADORABLE pixel graphics that accompany you while you create your own farm, build relationships with the villagers, explore, mine, cook, fish, and live off the land! PERFECT for green, kitchen, and eclectic witchcraft!
â¨Minecraft ~ this game has beautiful music that accompanies you as you build your experience from the ground up. Tons of pretty mods make this game super relaxing. Survive off the land, or be the creator of your own world - this game rules!
â¨Zelda: Breath of the Wild ~ the cooking in this game makes it good for witchcraft, but in general this game just plays, looks, and sounds like a studio ghibli movie. An awesome self-love game, even if you havenât played the other zeldas! you donât need to!!! itâs overall a good time!! :)

Writing ship-able couples
Here are some tips for writing relationships your readers can get behind:
1. Give them reasons to click
The two characters must have things in common - a hobby, a philosophy, a background. There has to be some element that connects them.
Your readers will root for relationships in which the characters fit together better than they would with others.
Also, make their traits compatible. Have them share some characteristics or have their strengths and weaknesses be complementary. Is the one hotheaded? Maybe the other keeps their cool well in situations of conflict.
There are endless possibilities. Just make sure thereâs a reason these two people like/love each other.
2. Have them be vulnerable in front of each other
Personally, this is the best way to get me to love a couple.
Have them share secrets, open up about their feelings and tell each other things they havenât told anyone. Have them cry in front of each other and comfort each other.
This can be taken to a whole new level by having them understand the otherâs emotions even without speaking and already offer comfort. Keep in mind that this will probably only be possible with long-established couples.
And having them open up is also a great way for them to discover all the things they have in common/love about each other.
3. Build up the tension
I cannot emphasise this enough: DO NOT MAKE YOUR COUPLES GET TOGETHER TOO QUICKLY.
One of the best elements of a romantic subplot (or even main plot) is the tension. Your readers want to see the pining! They want the build-up.
And no, Iâm not saying that you should introduce endless, petty obstacles. That can become tedious and appear forced.
Just give your characters time to sort through their feelings. Make them fall in love slowly. Have them be unsure. Insert SOME obstacles/conflicts.
Have them almost kiss a few times. Not all the time. Too many almost-kisses can become frustrating. But you should throw a few in there.
And, if you feel comfortable with it, add some sexual tension. Have them notice each otherâs bodies and imagine what theyâd like to do to each other (that sounds more explicit than I intended :) )
4. Write a healthy relationship
This could just be me and my rejection of unhealthy romances, but I will not root for abusive relationships.
Have your characters be kind to each other, support each other and truly care for each other.
If your characters are constantly putting each other down, physically/emotionally abusing each other or going against the otherâs wishes, theyâre not in a healthy relationship.
A great way to write a healthy relationship whilst still maintaining the tension, is to have the conflict in the relationship be external. Instead of having the conflict be due to internal struggles between the two characters, have obstacles enter from outside.
Your readers should want them to be together and for that, they should be good for each other.
5. Have their friends/family see their chemistry
I find it beyond adorable when two characters are still figuring out their feelings for each other, but the fact that theyâre perfect for each other is crystal clear to everyone around them.
Have their friends tease them about the relationship. Have family members ask after the them. Have their loved ones conspire to get them to admit their feelings.
If your other characters are rooting for them, your readers will probably do so as well.
Plus, this means that the chemistry between the two characters is so strong that itâs obvious, which is always good for an exciting romance.
Thatâs all Iâve got for now. If you have any further questions about writing OTPs or any other aspect of writing, feel free to message me or pop me an ask.

Bring Real Magic to your RPGS
**Before you try any of these PLEASE make sure everyone in your party is okay with you bringing your practice inot the game**
đ˛ Devote a ceritan die to your dieties. When your character has to make a role having to do with an aspect of your diety, use that die.
đ˛ Write sigils on your character sheet! Maybe you use sigils to help yourself get more comfortable with getting into characters, or sigils to have interesting adventures or great dialog.
đ˛ Keep stones like Adventurine, Citrine, Malachite or bloodstone in your dice bag for good luck. Charge up a ring, necklace, or keychaine with Carnelian and Red Jasper and wear it when playing to help you get into character.
đ˛ When inspiring your friends or casting a spell, try an actual little rhyming chant to try and get the intention of your acting across and flowing into the game itself. This will also help you get into character.
đ˛ Look up names with significant meaning behind them! Names! Have! Power!
But most of all, have fun!!!

If you need something good right now:
Iâll trade you one bad memory for a summer day full of mint.
Theres a wide rock by the river near my house. Lay on it. Itâs warm, the sun shines. Smell fresh water and earth and stone.
The trees overheard sway in the breeze, and the shadows of their leaves dapple the ground, the rock, and you.
A wild mint plant grows right by your hand, all green and fuzz and toothed leaves. Place one on your tongue. It tastes like coolness and freshness and you close your eyes.
Savor the sun. Donât worry for now. Just listen to the water rush by.
Give me your bad memory. Iâll hold it for a while. You can have it back whenever you need it, but for now, take mine.
Take a summer day full of mint and happy, delve into it. Rest a while. Youâre safe.
