in football there are 2 main rules

1) Never take the lead first against Croatia.

2) Never go to extra time against Croatia.

okay, but honestly everyone trying to make a joke about england not winning a medal is kind of missing the point?

this young, inexperienced team are not even at their peak and this is the most promise england has seen in a team in my lifetime and i’m 23. not even that but my little brother that used to idolise teams like brazil, spain and germany and wear messi, iniesta and ozil t-shirts  for the first time in his life has players to look up to from his own country. for his birthday he’s asked for kane, henderson, lingard and dele strips. so like football actually did come home. this team united us, inspired a generation and has provided us with footballing idols from our own soil. we actually have hope again. these boys deserve all the praise in the world and i will never forget any of their names or this world cup.

the one thing that bothers me most and that i refuse to stand for because i had to go through it, because 14 years later i continue to go through it, is pundits reducing croatia’s world cup success to a cinderella story, a fairytale, a miracle.

one year ago i took a history of football course and when we discussed greece’s 2004 euros win, i had to sit there and listen to a room full of people as they justified this type of behavior because ‘we didn’t play beautiful football’ and ‘our wins were barely wins’ and any other dismissive comment under the sun.

i have already seen plenty of articles talking about how france are the favorites and postulating what kind of miracle croatia need to overcome them. i have already seen people try to turn this into a fairytale that doesn’t exist.

there are no miracles here, only sweat, blood, and tears. only broken records for longest run distances, for most matches played by one player. only players absolutely refusing to give up and be subbed out even when their legs are failing them. only teamwork and solidarity and teammates pushing and helping each other until the final whistle.

give croatia the credit it more than deserves for making it to this final. stop reducing them to the perpetual small underdog that can only dream of a miracle to overcome france. the playing field is even and croatia has just as much of a chance to win as france does.
