— Questions for Warriors of Light, Scions, and Echo Bearers:

I’ve always had a soft spot for WoLs and WoL-adjacent characters, and I love to see how different people interpret the role of WoL and fine-tune it to fit their characters. So, I’d like to offer my fellow writers some specific questions that I’ve asked myself about my own WoL in the form of an ask game!

HERO: Does your character consider themselves a Warrior of Light? How do they feel if/when other people address them as such? ORIGIN: If your character is formally a Scion of the Seventh Dawn, how did they join the organization? If they aren’t a Scion, do they know of the Scions? QUEST: Does your character’s story diverge from the plot of the MSQ at any point? Does their story change just slightly, or is it considerably different? ALLIANCE: Does your character have any important relationships with major NPCs? Friendships, romances, rivalries? TRIAL: Are there any duty instances that had a particular impact on your character (primal fights, dungeons, raids, etc.)? TRAVEL: Does your character have a favorite city-state? A favorite overworld zone? What about least favorite zones? BASE: Does your character live at the Waking Sands, the Rising Stones, and/or Fortemps Manor at any point? LOYALTY: Is your character notably committed to any of the major organizations in the story other than the Scions? The Grand Companies, Garlond Ironworks, the many guilds of Eorzea, etc.? CLASS: Is your character canonically any specific class(es) or job(s) from the game (e.g. white mage or dark knight)? If so, do you count that job’s questline as canon for your character? ECHO: If your character has the Echo, does it grant them any particular strengths beyond the usual benefits (e.g., Minfilia’s strong connection to Hydaelyn, Krile’s ability to follow a soul’s trail)? What about particular drawbacks or weaknesses? SHIFT: Have the events of the MSQ changed your character in any major ways? What about more subtle changes?

Whoop not to throw my 2 cents in but like

Any diaspora person of color can see that there are racist elements in Stormblood (from a perspective outside the meta) and even if SE was going to implement a playable Garlean race it just wouldn’t be realistic without a ton of effort on their part to alter the story for garlean PCs compared to othe PCs (which, as we know, is not something they like to do) so I really don’t see the point in arguing for one.

And look - playing a Garlean defector could be fun. Having a game explore how a character unlearns racist and imperialistic ideologies for the sake of the greater good would be interesting. That being said, if you’re going to RP as a Garlean, and especially if you’re RPing as a Garlean who hasn’t defected, don’t expect players of color to do the emotional labor of dealing with you and your character. Incase you forgot, like you, we play videogames to have fun away from the stress of life, and unlike you, that includes the major and microaggressive racism we have to deal with on the daily. Especially when you consider that people of color are actually to this day still called ‘savages’ by racists. If you’re going to play a Garlean character, it’s your responsibility to make the effort to do so in a way that doesn’t cause harm to players of color you may interact with. And if that includes these players of color not wanting to be anywhere near your character, you’re just going to have to accept it.

“But it’s not real!!” Sure, Doma, Ala Mhigo, and The Garlean Empire aren’t real, but the cultures they took inspiration from are real, and racism and imperialism their stories involve are real, and things people of color are still having to deal with whether you see it or not. Have some sympathy for your fellow players and respect our traumas, instead of expecting us to do emotional labor just so you can have fun playing pretend.

things that are okay: roleplaying as garleans and being interested in the lore and the conflict that can arise from what garlemald stands for. there is a reason there is 876487236468945987 billion world war 2 movies. 

things that are NOT okay: diminishing what the story is trying to convey, and ignoring the very obvious parallel of garlemald/fascism in effort to diminish the ramifications of the very clearly Bad Ideals of people like Varis. Stories are a way to explore real life- and often are way to explore real events in a fictional matter where ‘nobody is really getting hurt’ But that doesn’t diminish the fact that other rpers are real people that may find such things difficult to deal with due to the fact they actively deal with this shit in real life. that doesn’t give people the excuse to shit on garlean roleplayers but that does not mean people should stick their fingers in their ears and ignore other PEOPLE exploring the story and what it means to them. 

you can like Garlemald. You can like playing Garlean characters. that doesn’t make you a nazi or otherwise (unless you are using that as a way to shit on people oocly, and or using it icly to shit on people in an effort/excuse to be racist icly to get off oocly. that’s not cool. but i think we all should know that by now? that those people are not good and if you do that you’re not a good person.) but it also doesn’t make the story any less than what it is trying to convey just because you don’t want it too. 

stories are meant to be discussed, and dissected. like all art. it may just be a video game, but i know i at least, as a roleplayer- enjoy playing games because of the story. and stories to me are a form of art. there can be debate on the ramifications of what this story is meant to convey without silencing real people who may have real issues. just because someone has issue with how Garlemald is portrayed in game, doesn’t mean they have a slight against you. personally. if you’re respectful about how you play your character (see: you’re not using it as a power fantasy trip.) then you’re good! the issue is not with you personally! it’s okay! just communicate oocly and if someone brings up an issue, then listen to them. pls. can we just. listen to each other more?
