(From the Taylor survey of greek alchemy)
See this is interesting. One of the main things that alexandrian alchemists did was produce alloys that dyed the metals a yellow color, making them "golden." But! That yellow color generally comes from Zinc oxide, and greek alchemists didn't really know about Zinc.
Their main source of Zinc was Cadmia, which can have a ton of zinc or not very much depending on how it was formed. So, when greek alchemists tried to "make gold" out of cadmia and copper, it wouldn't always work.
But their rationale wasn't "maybe one of my substrates was impure" it was "maybe I didn't pray hard enough, or I did something wrong."
