clothing in yellowjackets

okay so i wanted to go on a little tangent about some of the symbolism i feel like went into the use of clothing in yellowjackets, mainly the use of sharing clothes

clothing is one of the main ways we express ourselves right? it’s an easy way to communicate across the kind of person we are, what we like, even down to things like our values etc.

personally i think this is used in an extremely clever way in yellowjackets when we look at the use of sharing their clothes, obviously durining winter it would make sense for clothes sharing and such, but i think it’s also super interesting to look at it in the way that sharing clothes is way all of them are trying to reinvent themselves post crash, wearing the clothes of their friends as symbolism for taking a part of their personality, attributes, values that they want to possess, trying to rebuild and reshape themselves into someone new and taking bits a pieces from things they admire from the others (this can also be looked at with the themes of cannibalism in the show as well)

also jackie, laura lee (and javi, though we haven’t seen to much of the aftermath of his death yet) have extra layers with this as well

lottie and shauna are both clinging onto their clothing, their belongings, trying to take parts of their identities to apply to themselves, because that’s also the closest thing they have to bringing them home

there aren’t bodies to bring back and burry, the only things left are their belongings, only scraps left of what was once them and by taking on their personalities, their values, possessions, that’s a way to remember them, to prove they were here and they existed

beyond what a newspaper article will recount about them, more then what their parents believed them to be, or what their classmates will mutter about them when they don’t return home

the others witnesses the closest to the true unfiltered versions of them that there was, they knew their flaws, their insecurities, things that they would only talk to eachother about, and they take that with them to carry on their legacy, to hold it with them and honour them

For one of the first times in his life, Chimney was not only chosen, but he was chosen lavishly. And then she woke up early enough to get her and their toddler ready, and practice Jee’s part in the proposal. She then made a breakfast spread and definitely practiced showing off her ring while drinking her coffee, making sure the angle was perfect for Chimney to see.

Chimney wasn’t just chosen. He was told “I choose you, and here are all the tiny little details to show you how excited I am to choose you” by a woman whose entire life has been one choice after another stolen from her. Grieving her brother. Telling her living brother the truth. Her first marriage. And now Maddie finally gets to choose, and she makes a show of it. Because this choice is the easiest one she’s ever made.
