the second round of hero work studies for u.a had arrived over the winter break & hawks hadn't managed to spend a single moment at his agency, or in turn with tokoyami. he feels bad about it –– but japan's future was at stake.

it'd been weeks even prior to the study since hawks had been here last, but he needed to make a pit stop to compile some information the p.l.f wanted –– so he enters through an open window & sighs in exhaustion, running a hand back through windswept hair & taking a second to slump back against the windowsill. the pro was confident he was going to get a bald spot in his feathers if he didn't make a breakthrough soon.

irritatingly, it was only then that he noticed he wasn't the only one in the room. maybe they were on a lunch break or sorting through reports... what time was it? nevertheless hawks bounces back instantaneously, as if he hadn't been internally stressed out of his mind.

❝ yo, tokoyami! long time no see! work studies goin' well? the others aren't being too soft on you, are they? ❞

endeavour's first question was already enough to have hawks snorting in amusement, a sly grin pulling at the hero's lips –– he's so glad he had ended up finding an opening to weasel himself into enji's company, the no.1 hero was a riot.

keen eyes slide over what he can see of the conversation; he doesn't have to, there's no context needed to tell endeavour what he wants to know after seeing shouto's reply, but hawks was nosy.

he laughs & gives the other a reassuring smile, but his amusement is still very palpable. ❝ it's an acronym, stands for ' too long; didn't read. ' sounds like you might have to be a little more concise with what'cha wanna say. need some help? ❞

"Hawks." The top hero approached the younger man, eyes locked on the phone in his hand, eyebrows furrowed as he seemed to be completely puzzled at something.

"Do you understand...the lingo?"

He turned the phone toward him, showing his text messages with Shouto, a lengthy message coming from the flame hero, whereas the student replied with a simple: "TL;DR"

the ' villain ' announces his return, gliding in through a window & landing cleanly in front of the other, wandering closer with a casualness like they had been friends for years instead of unwilling companions who had to pretend they trusted each other.

hawks lazily outstretches an arm, handing dabi a blank folder with a couple of papers secured inside. ❝ got you the info you wanted & details on the heroes involved, just low level pros working under other agencies. piece of cake right? ❞

he hates this, but a job is a job & what the commission says goes. whatever it takes to reach the freedom he dreams of. he hopes they can decode his message in time to get a couple support heroes on standby before dabi's done making him his errand boy.

he wasn't supposed to be out here & keigo knew that very well, he thought he probably knew it more than any other lesson he'd learned from his parents... well, that & that he was a very, very big inconvenience, one that should keep his head down & stay quiet when he can.

so that was precisely why he was out here now –– he was hungry & they were out of food back home... he risks being hit or overloading his mother with burdens if he asks when she's going to the supermarket next... so the little boy took it upon himself to grab something from a tree outside, just quickly, he won't be gone long.

keigo's wings ache as he stretches them out, sore & stiff from hardly being used, & a feather works precisely yet shakily to fetch an apple from a tree. the stem finally breaks & keigo allows himself a little smile, but it's on the way back down that his feather wobbles a little too much & sends the apple toppling off, stumbling along the grass until it hits a mans shoe. keigo's wings puff up in a slight panic, he's quick to rush over.

hawks laughs at that. he knows he shouldn't, but he laughs anyway.

he laughs because he understands in a way he's not sure he's really felt before, not when it surrounded family. there's a difference between understanding in theory how families are supposed to work & parents are meant to treat their children, & understanding from experience what it's like to be a mistake, a complete burden to his families lives.

hawks –– or maybe keigo; hawks the hero, the weapon doesn't have a family –– is very certain that if his father wasn't paranoid that he'd tell the police of his criminal activity he would've been kicked out onto the streets, & he doesn't think his mother was well enough to stop it from happening.

...what was he doing here, talking with dabi like this? it was risky, foolish. he was upsettingly close to talking about things he never has & never could. who would'a thought he'd find something close to validation with a villain? that's just his luck, the world is cruel.

he mentally disconnects.

with a moment only spared to shrug & sigh in defeat, hawks hops up onto mirko's back & holds on, trying to find a comfortable position against her bigger frame & folding his wings in a way that hopefully wont make her too top heavy. luckily, his bones were hollow, so odd weight shouldn't be an issue.

dabi's question makes him think & keigo finds it funny, because he's always thought of happiness as freedom. societal freedom, but also in a way physical. he's been caged up for as long as he's been alive ---- living under someone else's paranoia & anger for the first critical years of his life, then under firm expectations & a lifelong contract immediately after.

he never thought he could find freedom ---- happiness in another person.

at least ... not until recently .

his home has never felt this full , & it wasn't full in a cramped, crowded, & dirty sense like it was when he was younger... it was full with food, blankets left neatly in places they had been used around the house in recent days, the sound of the dishwasher running & bare feet on wooden flooring.

lived in ... for the first time in his life, he was living.
