I feel like with the resurgence of the Y2K era, Romeo and Juliet could really benefit from this. Shakespeare in general, to be honest. How do you think we got the absolute gem She’s the Man?

This setting is perfect for playing up exaggerated stereotypes. Think Mean Girls meets Baz Luhrmann.

Juliet’s out-of-placeness becomes visually and socially obvious, as does Romeo’s. Think about it: As a young woman from a prestigious family, she isn’t allowed to leave her house (unchaperoned, at the very least). From what we can gather from the original story, she’s probably never really had friends. Maybe Juliet isn’t the object of every guy’s desire. She’s ‘weird’ (and not in the manic pixie dream girl way), sheltered, and socially awkward. Her family is still influential, but that just means strict rules, private school, and no social life. She’s lived a life of quiet invisibility. I think this is what makes the tragedy of her fate even sadder.

Romeo is dramatic and emotionally volatile. He’s not unpopular, but he doesn’t feel like he really belongs anywhere either. He wants a real connection, but he’s unsure how to make one.

What could make this even better, and more depressing when you’re not focusing on the absurdity of the story, is how much their parents SUCK. They don’t have the excuse of not knowing what depression is because this is a modern-ish story. I saw someone say once that Romeo and Juliet isn’t just about two dumb teenagers falling in love and then dying, but how detrimental it is to not listen or pay attention to your kids until it’s too late. I feel like an adaptation like this might emphasis this a little more.

I have a soft spot for tropes like these, and with how melodramatic Romeo and Juliet is, I think it’d be a lot of fun if done well.
