Detail from Episodio de la 2da División Buenos Aires en la Batalla de Tuyutí (1889), painted by Argentine artist Cándido López, who was born 171 years ago today. The Battle of Tuyutí resulted in over 6,000 casualties and remains the largest battle ever fought on South American soil. It took place in Paraguay during the year 1866, and was part of the War of the Triple Alliance.
