Arms curl about his legs as he pulls them up close to his chest, instinctively shrinking in the space so he might be as unnoticeable as he wishes to be when he walks the streets of their homeland. Then perhaps they might leave him alone, stop casting him as their monster and failing to see the boy who carries the burden too heavy for his own shoulders. His fingers tighten in fabric, a cocktail of shame, anger and despair swirling in his gut and he presses his forehead to his knees in an attempt to force himself to breath.

Fourth Mizukage... Yagura... why did you curse me to this existence?

He will never know the answer. There are few Karatachis left, and those that are will not speak of the shame of their clan, determined to simply exist, scared of the way he seems to be bringing the attention back to them once more. Kagura wishes he could just be loved.

And yet, there are moments of reprieve, like this, when the weight of the darkness and the cruelty of fate are not as hard to bear. Yuki Asanoha with her gentle care and determination to buffer the world from him are glimmers of hope against a sea of despair, the buoy he clings to before he drowns. He will never truly be able to thank her.

His voice cracks and he muffles a presses lips together firmly, refusing to allow the sob to escape. He cannot break, waver yes, despair yes, but break never. There is a gentleness in his words despite the quiet chastisement he gives, born of the concern he feels when he looks upon Daiten. He wonders if he had stepped in more forcefully if he would be able to change her fate before Root had done this to her. He'll never know. It doesn't stop the glint of sadness he feels.

"I just wish you'd be more careful with your life sometimes, that's all. There are people here who care about you..." Naruto, Shikamaru to name a few, Kakashi too though he'll never admit as much... "I care about you." In a different life I might have had the courage to raise you as my own.

"You are more than just a tool for the village, more than your jutsu or skills. Yes, risking death comes with the life, but it should not be a requirement for every job you encounter. Not with a skillset like yours..." A mark of pride there, now, for he has seen her grow from the youth he used to test and now a fully fledged shinobi entirely. "Call it nostalgia..." Though the words returned are flippant it's hard to ignore the exhausted edge to them, the way he can barely keep his eye open and how his body collapses more than falls onto the sofa when he stumbles to a halt. Back to back missions for days, each requiring the sharingan, extensive amount of chakra and his only sustenance being food pills for the majority of time. He hasn't worked like this since he was in the ANBU. It's all but a miracle he's too stubborn to let it get the best of him.

He groans and pushes himself up until he is in what could be an upright position, hand over his exposed eye and releases a sigh. Just five minutes, he'll allow himself, five to sit and be and then he must get moving. Check his gear, change out supplies, summon Pakun to report to the Hokage with his findings and plan his next route. And of course acknowledge Tenzo who is likely not escaping the fact that the only reason he's used his ANBU name is his brain is so fogged from work that he feels like he is back there. Not a conversation he's looking forward to.

The dry comment is offered with a brief lift of gaze from his book, turned upon Daiten for a moment before he resumes looking at the text. It takes him a minute to glean that no real harm was done though perhaps leaving her a little shaken and so he does not make any hurried motions to move.

"Perhaps your next training might be on tempering those instincts, hm? Not all shinobi are as gifted as Naruto at being able to laugh off such an occasion."

There's a contemplative air to the words as Kakashi brings his book to a close, eye focused upon his student. He does not offer words of comfort, remaining quiet as he considers the weight that the other is carrying and studies his form for sign of physical injury, that the burden he carries is more than the way the world weighs upon him. He cannot offer consolation for that. The path is decided, there is little he can do to change it only alleviate what he can to ease it a while.

"When was the last time you took a break, Naruto?" A pause and he slips the book away, hands finding his pockets as he nods his head. "That ramen place you like should still be open." There's no question, only the statement before he begins to turn in the direction of Ichiraku's, letting the implication lie.

There's certainly a sigh in his voice as Shikamaru speaks, the long suffering kind that marks exasperation, though not one that lies bone deep, cradled by an understated fond glint to his eyes. You'd think he'd be used to it, they've worked together long enough. Arms cross over his chest as he settles into a lean against the wall, eyes closing as he feels the oncoming headache and he huffs.

"You want to explain it again? Slowly this time, so we can try and work out the solution." There's no question as to whether or not he's going to help. Of course he will. Naruto's important to him, and one day going to be important to the village in a far greater capacity than most can imagine. He's going to support him all the way there, even if that journey comes with its fair share of migranes along the way.

Her words wash over him, committed to the portion of his mind that will forget them instantly, sitting as though he is listening though there's not an ounce of retention to them. He's heard it all before from so many who have insisted he take better care of himself, who have worried for the way he drives his body forward irregardless of the damage it takes. The gentle scolding brings lips to a curve beneath his mask, the expression not quite a smile, too much melancholy in his look to ever claim joy.

"I had a good teacher, there's no need for concern."

He doesn not voice who, cannot bring voice to Rin, and instead focuses on the page, reading the text to hold himself in the moment until the work is done. He knows it's standoffish but it's long seated, something that he can barely give voice to let alone manage. He sighs and then tips his head away from his book to look to her.

"Any major village news while I've been occupied..."

The question goes ignored initially, exposed eye trained upon the page of his book, scanning the contents quietly. It’s not that he intends to ignore her, but rather it seems like only a chance to increase the worries about him with honest answers, and Kakashi has little use for the concerns of others when it comes to his work.

He’s hardly likely to change because of them after all.

“You talk as though I am on death’s door… It’s just a scratch.” If she is overstating his injuries, he is only counteracting with underselling them, book snapping shut with a sigh soon after. He hums as he avoids drawing away and glances in her direction from the corner of his eye. 

“Why bother the medical centre for stitches? I’d do them myself if it was an easier to reach place…” He huffs a sigh after, letting his lid fall over his eye and tipping his head back. It jostles him slightly, but he stills again after a sharp twinge of pain is caused by the movement. “My sewing skills can always use the practice,” he hums, tone a little more light-hearted at his addendum.

{ ♪ } – “It’s really not a scratch…”

She mumbled quietly, but didn’t comment further. It may not have been as serious as she’d made it sound, but it certainly wasn’t as mundane as he was claiming. Even as she worked, she stole little glances at what she could see of his face. It wasn’t ever easy to tell what sort of expressions he was making, with how he hardly had any of his face visible, but she was learning.

“You should bother us about it, even though it isn’t bothersome, because doing it yourself can honestly make things worse. It could get infected if you don’t sterilize things properly, or a wrong stitch could affect how it heals…”

Sighing softly, she shook her head.

“I’m just concerned about you. Like I worry about all the shinobi of Konoha.”

It's clear he's enjoying watching her struggle, baring no empathy for the long sleeves, a deep chuckle escaping him as fabric flops over her hands like a fish out of water.

His disposition changes when he witnesses the ability at use, eyes narrowing as he watched the sleeves destroyed, his mind thrown back to a man of different duty, a different time. She's speaking though it takes a moment before he notices, distracted by a thread of his past returned once more. Fate truly is interesting in the cards it plays.

"You certainly are, kid..." he returns, teeth glinting viciously as his lips curl in a smile. "But that's when things get interesting."

Remorseless words drip with amusement at her plight as sharpened teeth glint in a vicious grin that only enhances the feeling. While it might be more prudent to set about being practical, Kisame much prefers indulging in the humour of seeing her drowned within the cloak, unable to be taken seriously when fabric pools eagerly at every opportunity.

“Perhaps you might want to shear away the excess. It is unlikely you will ever need it.” You’re never going to grow into it, he implies with another look that betrays his mirth at her predicament. “Unless of course you intend to constantly fold it back to your elbows every time your arm shifts… That sounds pretty tiresome.”

“   i’m   not   out   of   my   depth.   ”   daitens   gaze   raises   to   challenge   the   bold   accusation   and   the   humor   he   found   in   her   plight   /   the   moment   that   she   moves   to   act   like   she’d   given   up   is   the   moment   that   the   cloth   falls   over   her   hands   again.

disappointed   and   annoyed,   she   sighs.   “   yeah,   i   agree   …   ”   her   lips   tighten,   and   she   reaches   for   the   excess   cloth   —-   not   to   fold   it   back   again   but   to   use   her   ability   for   one   of   the   first   times   around   another   akatsuki   member   to   destroy   it,   leaving   the   sleeves   only   to   go   to   her   elbows.

“   it   would’ve   helped   if   you   guys   weren’t   giants,   y'know,   but   sure.   i’m   the   one   out   of   my   depth.   ”
