Film Review: ‘Malang’
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
Mohit Suri’s Malang is highly remenecient of his previous films ‘Ek Villan’ and ‘Ashiqui 2’. It has the same intent of conveying loss, pain, revenge and other intense emotions.
It has the same background of a slightly flawed love story that is interrupted just when it was about to be saved. It’s most major twist is actually a twist only because it wasn’t a twist in ‘Ek Villian’. Having said all of this, it is also true that the film was engaging in certain of it’s parts.
The story of ‘Malang’ is set in Goa, and revolves around the lives of two cops, a probable murderer, and his lover. All the major characters, according to the trailer are killers. The film then, is a series of murders and stories leading up to motives of these murders.
We are given an always-on-edge Agase (Anil Kapoor), a straight faced no-nonsense Michael (Kunal Khemu), a brooding, highly bulked-up Advait (Arjun Kapoor) and an adrenaline addicted, body flaunting Sara (Disha Patni).
The film tries to draw thrill and mystery by creating a world of rave parties and all the ‘bad’ things that middle-aged people associate with them. Talks of “no rok tok”, living from “one high to another”, bunjie-jumping, diving, etc all try to support this hollow world.
The contrast that the director was aiming at with screens of two chiselled bodied individuals in beautiful locations against the grimness of the murder and the immoral cops is lost because the former world rings hollow.
The first few minutes of the film introduce us to “Aaj ki raat koi aane ko hai”. The song is interspersed in pieces throughout the film and could have been very interesting in the hands of a more skilled director.
The weak storyline, held together by a series of co-incidences, is covered up by visuals of the beautiful beaches of Goa, the loud and ‘mysterious ‘ world of drugs and sex.
The predictable fight-sequences are interrupted by flashbacks of love-stories or stories of loss and this keeps the audience from falling asleep in their seats.
Aseem Arora, Aniruddha Guha and Mohit Suri have tried to make their thriller complex with concepts of masculinity, ‘abandoned childhood’, ‘broken marriages’, etc but without a ‘hint’ of subtlety.
The characters are given unexpected and unnecessary arcs and then these arcs are over explained. The entire film stays on the surface with a strong intent to convince the audience otherwise.
A lot of ideas used to build the film have no context when they occur in the film or are carelessly disregarded once they have conveyed a certain mood.
One of the characters uses the word ‘Hippie’ to describe the kind of culture the film deals with but our two leads who are apparently representations of this culture actually behave more like very rich kids out for a vacation.
The idea of ‘parenthood’ is also brought into the picture, but it isn’t used to any significance like in ‘Ye Jawaani, Hai Deewani’, instead it is a false means to invoke sympathy for our characters.
While Advait is the son of a separated couple as a plot device, Sara's issues with her parents and the reason for her leaving her family doesn't quiet come across to the audience.
Michael's back story is too sudden without any foreshadowing and is immediately followed by a detailed spoken explanation.
It appears everyone in ‘Malang' is a ‘Freud' in his/her own right.
Like a lot of his contemporaries, Arjun Kapoor has never risen up to any acting talent. His characters are either bulked up and fun or heavily bulked up and angry.
There is seldom any other difference between various film characters. Disha Patani plays the same bright-eyed still faced doll. She too has remained predictably underwhelming in her performances. Anil Kapoor is somewhat believable.
He does come across as an uncontrolable perpetually haunted man! He has a wonderfully predictable quality to his erratic mannerism. Kunal Khemu's character has been very suddenly developed and he tries to do with it what he can.
The story could have been set in any big city with a cosmopolitan population and it wouldnt have made a difference to the film. Filmifiles.com is a website which offers news, views and even the inside stories from the glamour world be it Bollywood or Hollywood, for those who love the world of movies, stars and the art of cinema.
The Bollywood music industry has depended on films to keep it breathing and as a result music only ever becomes supplementary to the entire film. The music in ‘Malang' too is just a subordinate element in the entire film.
The audiences can expect a one-time watch!

Movie Review: ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
Jawaani Janeman is the story of one 40 year old Jasvinder Singh or Jazz, living in London, the wealth of whose parents have allowed him to remain an immature “play-boy” without care or responsibility. Jazz played by Saif Ali Khan is a real-estate broker who goes to office for the sake of formality and to the club as an everynight-ritual.
He sleeps around often and mostly forget about his sexual escapades. This is also why when a 21 year old girl, who he is looking on to with sexual interest tells him that he could be her father, he is flummoxed.
The girl, Tiya, played by Aaliya Furniturewala gets Jazz to take a DNA test which come about positive and in the process also finds out she is pregnant.
Jazz becomes a father and grandfather is a matter of three days and having never taken any responsibility, he panics. He also throws his pregnant daughter out of his house to keep his ‘aazadi' intact.
He has a heart felt conversation with his friend Riya, who makes him realise that everyone needs a family. In a moment of ‘vulnerability' he goes out to Tiya and ends up accepting his responsibility of her.
The first half of the film is slow, highly predictable, and boring. Saif Ali Khan does for the entire first half of Jawani Janeman what he did for the first few minutes of his introduction in Cocktail.
He plays about, shirks responsibility, flourishes his money and takes the easy way out every time. His daughter, unswayed by this, is adamant in her desire to have a father-daughter relationship.
The second half is more interesting with a few minutes of Ananya or Tabu, the redemption arc, the eccentric boyfriend, the new emotional developments. The film moves at a set medium pace. The pace doesn't change in moments of elation and it doesn't dip when there is separation. Nothing seems to be at stake.
The film talks a lot about ‘age' in a refreshing take. Actors are their actual age for once and this age hasn't been brushed under the carpet. It is written in Jazz's bling T-shirts and beer belly, it is also written in Alaya's khol-rimmed shining eyes.
It was satisfying to watch Jazz call Tiya ‘beta' while realizing that Saif in fact has a daughter around the age of Tiya. It was good to see that for once, a film did not try to lull us into believing a man of 40 is actually a college student with ‘mature' looks.
For a film that deals with a man who has been running from his family for long and is finally redeemed by breaking this idea, the discussion and development of the idea is missing.
It seems odd that a man who detested the idea of family and responsibility at once agrees that everyone needs a family. He is convinced without ever being in denial and hence, without ever giving the audience the change to debunk its own ideas on the same.
Also the film is highly predictable because it tries very hard to maintain it's steady pace.
It is the old rogue boy meets patient girl.
Girl inspires boy to ‘emotionally' mature.
Boy tries and fails due to old habit leading to he girl leaving the boy.
Sad separation song plays and then they unite for a happily ever after!
The cast has done a great job and has great chemistry. Saif Ali Khan has the right amount of creepy desperation and irrational denial. One believes that Jazz exists and that he is Saif.
Tabu is a wonderfully talented actress and her poker face immediately lulls you into the facade that is the character of Ananya. Even though she has little screen time, she is the character the audiences wish to see.
Alaya didn't feel new on screen. She had the comfort and presence of an experienced actor. Appropriately cast her age, and not appropriated into the clinched bubbly cheerleader, she is fun to watch. Tiya, is also at moments more mature than her eccentric parents. Kubbra Seth is fun to watch but Kumud Mishra is scant.
Jawani Janeman is a well acted and directed film based on an old story with a new twist!

Amitabh Bachchan Ready With ‘Jhund’
Tumblr media
By FF Network
When Amitabh Bachchan released ‘Buddha Hoga Tera Baap’ in 2011, he wasn’t starring in a move, he was making a statement.
Years later, after giving back to back hits like Piku, Pink, Badla and 102 Not Out, Amitabh Bachchan has proved himself to be a legend of the world of cinema.
At the age when most actors prefer retiring, he has stuck with his art. And he has only gotten better with time, and has aged like wine.
Neither his looks nor his acting skills have been marred with age, rather they have grown fuller and more beautiful. At his age, Amitabh Bachchan has given more hits in the past couple of years than his son, and that is noteworthy!
Bachchan is now coming back to the big screens with his next movie- Jhund. The poster for which got released today and looks rather intriguing.
The movie is set to release soon. The release date would be announced tomorrow. And the movie is directed by Nagraj Manjula. Filmi Files is the best place to look for movie reviews online.
We cannot wait to see Bachchan back in his element, and be baffled by his on-screen magnanimity!

Chappak: Film Review
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
‛Chappak' is a movie like no other being made in Hindi cinema. It is so effortlessly real that one sits down to the opening credits and doesn't realise when the film has ended. It is like a conversation and its existence is inarguable.
Meghna Gulzar's ‛Chappak' is inspired by the life and work of Laxmi and the ‛Stop Acid Attack' campaign. Gulzar opens her film in the middle of the 2012 outrage with protesters demanding death for the accused. Amidst the ‛currently' all too relatable shots of water canon and lathi charge comes a man struggling to get the camera's attention on the picture of an acid attack victim. Foreshadowing the sequence of events that are to unfold over the course of the film.
We, finally meet Malati, who is struggling to get a job like any other person her age could have been, but in all the rejection she faces is an allusion to the acid attack that is an inseparable part of her life. She then meets Anmol and starts working at ‛Chayya', an NGO that works to support victims of acid attacks. The film then breaks linearity to reconstruct the events of Malati's life immediately after the acid attack.
The first police statement, the slow melting of the skin, the surgeries, the realisation that she didn't look the same anymore to the world and hence, she couldn't be the same anymore, all slide onto the screen effortlessly. There isn't one moment in the film which seems out of place. The film flows in one rhythm and the emotions of triumph, helplessness or pain are all as essential to the script as they are to the life of a person. The story then jumps 7 years ahead to introduce us to real women with real stories of horrid acid attacks. We see moments of defeat, moments of malice, and moments of love, all of which have been portrayed with utmost delicacy by Deepika Padukone.
We see two very different ways of activism. The activism of Anmol and the activism of Malati, and the absence of drama and conflict between the two. The story takes us back to the exact moment of the attack, time and again, perhaps to also mimic the moments' existence in the lives of those who live through it.
The one songs that reiterates throughout the film is the title track ‛Chappak Se Pehchan Le Gaya' and it is beautiful. It brings to life everything the movie tries to underline and its tune sticks to us long after the horror it speaks of has settled within us.
The script writing is so excellent that its seams and folds are invisible. Atika Chauhan and Meghna Gulzar have done a masterful job of it. Meghna, whose trademark non-masculine storey telling that was so beautifully evident in ‛Raazi' can be seen in ‛Chappak' too. The audience watches the movie and knows the maker and creator is not a man. The audience also knows, the vision of the film comes from a person with immense finesse and control over her craft. The film makes no effort to glorify the struggle of the survivors, nor does it make Malati or Anmol heroic.
The acting in the film is highly appreciable. The audience realises that Deepika's performance in the film is a result of extreme hard work and talent. The little mouse-like laughter, the deliberately lowered decibels of her voice, the innocence of a 19 year old girl from a lower middle class family are all on point.
She is an undeniably talented actor. Several critics have in the past commended Deepika on her ability to act with her eyes, but it was Vikrant Massey, who was ‛oh-so-delicate' is his performance. To perform a controlling and sulking boss amidst the women whose fight the entire movie is an allude to, and still be genuinely endearing is a talent most don't possess. In a film that examines masculinity so closely, Vikrant Massey will be dearly loved. His is a talent, the commercial industry might have refused to acknowledge, but he has never succumbed to mediocre acting as a result of it.
But, the film does more!
The film refuses to build hype. The film refuses to make the sequence of events a detective case. The film refuses to get consumed in the debate of beauty that so heavily lies at the core of ‛acid attacks' for many. It tells the story of Malati's (actually every survivor and activist's) struggle and triumph and in the end gives you the statistics of the increasing acid attacks in the country, the recent of which took place not more than a month ago.
It tells you of the parallel world that lies beside the one you live in. Moreover, it makes us not only look at but also listen to women whose faces we would have avoiding looking at had they passed us by. Bigg Boss 13: Key takeaways from India’s biggest reality show
Tumblr media
BY Ayushi Agarwal
Bigg Boss has become a hot topic on social media platforms. The show has been running for 13 years now, but this season has garnered the most talking points and broken many records. Let’s look at some factors which have made Bigg Boss 13 such a huge success that the makers have extended it for another 5 weeks.
Tumblr media
1. The Host: Salman Khan’s popularity is enough to create a buzz, he is hosting the show with utmost grace and is quite funny while talking to the contestants. Interestingly, this is Salman’s 10th year as the Bigg Boss host. He started hosting from season 4 and never looked back. Salman Khan has managed to connect with the housemates on a personal level and his Weekend Ka War episodes are worth watching.
2. A finale before the Grand finale: A mid season finale was an addition to this season, half of the housemates were evicted and the same number of new contestants entered the Bigg Boss house.
Tumblr media
3. Wildcard contestants: This season holds the record of highest number of wildcard contestants. A total of 13 wildcards entered the house.
4. Siddharth-Rashmi controversy: The viewers are very much engaged with the duo’s controversy, they’re speculating everything because it has become quite dirty. Their last argument ended in Rashmi throwing tea on Siddharth and Siddharth responding with the same actions. It has also divided Bigg Boss fans.
Tumblr media
5. Violence Approved?: It seems like this season of Bigg Boss has given free hands to the contestants. Initially, Siddharth Shukla started this trend and pushed Asim thrice but he was not eliminated. Asim also pushed him, Himanshi pushed Sana and they were all left with warnings. In earlier seasons, KRK, Priyank Sharma were evicted because of violence.
6. Friends turned Foes: The 1st month of Bigg Boss 13 gave the viewers a beautiful bromance between Siddharth and Asim but eventually they became their enemies from being best of friends. The two are always seen poking and instigating each other, also engaging in disgusting verbal abuses.
Tumblr media
7. Record Breaking TRPs: Bigg Boss 13 has stood out and has become the most populous season. The season was supposed to end on 1st week of January but looking at its popularity, makers decided to give it an extension of 5 weeks. It will now end on 15th February.
8. Twitter Trends: Bigg Boss audience is not lagging behind in talking about their favourite contestants. Asim, a model and a very young man has already created a lot of buzz with millions of tweets trending for him. And so has been the case of Siddharth Shukla, he is trending almost every day. These two are the most popular housemates till now.
Bigg Boss 13 is giving every possible form of entertainment to the viewers. Friends turned enemies, relationships getting sour, budding romances, groups plotting, this season has all the ingredients and it is blending perfectly. It is a drama packed watch.
The show has managed to create some controversies outside as well but its fans just cannot get enough of the housemates and the host, Salman Khan. Film Review: ‘Good Newzz’
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
Good Newwz is bad newz for Hindi Cinema. The Raj Mehta directed story is set in Bombay and revolves around the story of two couples, both with the last name Batra. The first couple of Varun and Deepti Batra played by Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan seem like they are at war throughout the film.
Their main quarrel is about producing a child, Deepti wants one and Varun couldn't be more irritated. After an unnecessary 'Laal Ghargra', the two decide to go to a fertility specialist. A certain semen collection takes place.
Talks of ovaries and embryos happen and finally the much awaited couple of Honey and Monika Batra arrive is the stereotyped Punjabi style. They are loud and full of bling as is evident from the trailers and work really hard to make the already senseless plot, entirely unbearable.
The friction between Varun and Deepti is sharp to the point where one wants to scream at them to get a divorce. Writers Jyoti Kapoor and Raj Mehta have done a very sloppy job and this lack of effort shows clearly on screen. Rishabh Sharma's jokes are like nails on a blackboard.
One of the characters cracks a joke and we are forcefully informed if this by simplistic background music. There is a scene where Monika farts as a result of her pregnancy bowels and the fact that she farted is made into a joke. No one is the audience laughs. Then the joke is cracked gain, and still nobody laughs.
Then a few seconds later the joke is brought to attention again with no body except Akshay Kumar laughing. After a point the audience is irritated because bad writing is being covered up with loud acting, ‛unoriginal' sound track and excited laughter at senseless jokes.
Monika played by Kiera Advani barely speaks up during the course of the film, and whenever Honey (Diljit Dosanjh) speaks, it is to reassert the cliche of a rich Punjabi boy.
They both are supposed to be stupid and Varun calls them "jaahil" and "joker" on more than a few occasions. The evidence apparently is a difference in class and culture. Varun's character assumes the role of a typical entitled man, pronouncing judgement on everyone around him, including his wife.
He is angry, upset, inappropriate, decent and desperately trying to be funny. He comes across as a ‛douche' of a husband who couldn't be more ‛insensitive' and even after the film specifically calls his insensitivity to question twice, he isn't a  redeemed character in the end. Deepti is nagging and stubborn.
The sheer force of her irritation towards the world around her is the only understandable feature of the film. The creative possibilities of an incident like the event of a sperm mix-up are many and most intriguing but the film can't move beyond the narrow perspective provided to it by its makers. The film talks of "apna khoon toh apna hi hota hai" in a society where several children of their fellow celebrities are a result of adoption and surrogacy.
The film even mentions the right of the mother as being superior to that of the right of the father without even discussing the reason for the Punjabi Batras travelling miles from Punjab to Mumbai to ensure that their genes are safe. They two expectingmothers are greatly attached to the 'hearts beating inside them' but their husbands have divided priorities. The reason for these divided priorities is unaddressed.
The reason for Varun's insensitivity and detachment towards the child in his wife's womb is left to the winds. The attraction Varun feels for "Dr Mrs Joshi" is left unaddressedafter the initial intimation. Dr Mr(?) Joshi likes to pray before procedures for no rational reason.
The actors have done no extraordinary work. Akshay Kumar is not funny, Kareena Kapoor is playing Kareena Kapoor, Kiera Advani is playing 'there-but-insignificant' and Diljit Dosanjh is disappointingly playing Bollywood's stereotyped idea of a rich Punjabi man. Adil Hussain is replaceable and Tisca Chopra seems to have been replaced by another actor.
The songs of the film are like the songs of every Bollywood film today. The background score is disturbing and takes away from the story instead of adding to it.
I can't think of any reason to spend your weekend watching this film.

Bollywood dance films setting high dancing standards
Tumblr media
By FF NETWORK
Indian film industry is mostly about Masala, drama, love triangle, romance. Although, there are very seldom times when a dance based film is made in the industry. Mithun Chakravarti, the disco king has been in few dance themed films. However, Bollywood is coming up with dance films more often now. The upcoming dance film is Street Dancer 3D.
Street Dancer 3D is the third part of ABCD & ABCD2 directed by choreographer turned director Remo D’Souza, and it stars Varun Dhawan & Shraddha Kapoor as leads. Nora Fatehi, Prabhu Devs, Caroline Wilde, Raghav Juyal. The trailer of the film released on YouTube and the film’s story is based on a dance battle between teams of different countries.
It can be clearly seen that Varun Dhawan is leading the Indian side while Shraddha Kapoor is on the Pakistini team. Like all the India vs Pakistan situation, this dance battle will also get intense. Both of the sides will perform their hearts out, eventually to come together for the final battle. Nora Fatehi’s moves are aw striking.
The film is releasing on 24 January. And will probably attract a lot of audiences because of its storyline.

Some other dance themed films which received a lot of buzz are:

Tumblr media
Aaja Nachle(2007): This is a film with an US returned choreographer trying to save her dance theater in her hometown. The dance drama in the end was its main attraction.

Moview Review: ‘Dabangg3’
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
After a series of flops and disasters, salman khan rose back to superstardom from 2010's blockbuster Dabangg. After that in 2012 he proved that he has a huge blind fanbase when a crap named Dabangg 2 earned more than 150 crores. And now in 2019 he is back once again to prove that indian audience still doesn't care about anything when Salman khan is present on screen.
So this weekend we watched Dabangg 3, please read our complete review to know how it is. Like its previous installments Dabangg 3 too opens with a group of thugs looting people and Salman khan coming to get them all alone. Ten minutes into the movie and we get to see a lot of slow-mo action sequences and some unnecessary, excessive cheap humor.
And then again in a long unnecessary scene we are introduced to his family that has his wife Rajjo(Sonakshi Sinha), his brother makkhi(Arbaaz Khan) and his father (this time played by Vinod's brother Pramod Khanna) and his son bittu.
Makkhi is now also a police inspector and along with his brother he rescues a group of girl from being "smuggled". And this smuggling chain leads Chulbul pandey to Bali singh played by kiccha sudeep.
After this we get to see one of the most vague flashback story of bollywood. Where dhakad pandey i.e Salman khan in his 20s, is in love with khushi played by Sai Manjrekar. They are about to get married but somehow bali gets a "glimpse" of khushi and decides to marry her.
When Bali comes to know about dhakad and khushi's relationship he kills her along with her family. And to revenge khushi's death dhakad pandey joins police force. And thus Chulbul pandey the robinhood cop is born. With Bali's entry the script becomes unilateral and the war begins with betrayal, action, dialogue baazi etc. But to see how it ends you will have to watch the movie.
Talking about the screenplay, the film has many loopholes. The story written by Salman khan himself is a redemption of 80s revenge drama and is too filmy at many points.
After the horrible Action-Jackson this is the dullest movie from Prabhu deva. With his name as director one can expect some good humor like Wanted, rowdy rathore or singh is bling. But this time maybe someone else had the command while he was just wearing the director's cap. The biggest letdown for this movie is its music, irrelevant, unnecessary song at every 20 minutes irritates you to the core. Except Munna badnam hua you won't even remember a single of them.
Dabangg's innovative ackground music was the soul of the movie, this time Sajid-Wajid tried to do some experiments with it and they fail badly. Background score is too forced and loud. However in one of the fighting sequence the addition of word "Badass" on salman's entry is just superb, maybe one of the card got into the right place.
Despite all this criticism you can't blame Salman khan this time, because he is the only good thing about the film. He tries comedy, struggles in emotional scenes but nails every action sequence. Sai manjerekar was good in her part, as a debutant she passed the test with distinction.
Kiccha sudeep, most of us know him as the antagonist of south's blockbuster Eega. But it's painful to see him struggling on the screen with hindi dialogues, his character is poorly developed and that's the main reason he doesn't look what the director is trying to show.Filmi Files is the best place to look for movie reviews online.
Sonakshi sinha is going downwards with every installment of the franchise. Every time she speaks you know that it is something unimportant. Arbaaz khan is here because he is the producer of the movie, his character was supposed to be the comic relief in movie but like makkhi arbaaz khan fails at his job too. All said and done, Dabangg 3 is strictly for salman khan fans. If you're looking for good entertainment then you'll have to wait for some more days until something better comes.
