Ghost Busters Post Production Editing
#4: Upload the 16:9 Video to YouTube for Auto-Transcription
OpenDrives is the first to admit that expensive all-flash drive technology is not always the best solution for higher resolution, large capacity workflows. There are ways to ensure that a film’s sound is diligently handled, while working within a budget. This often comes from a transparent discussion at the onset of the project about a director’s expectations versus the reality of the budget/schedule.
What is pre and post production?
“That's a wrap!” When a movie director makes the call, cameras stop rolling, and a film is ready to move into its final phase: postproduction. This the final step in taking a story from script to screen, and the stage when a film comes to life.
Just uploading informational blog posts to your website and social media pages regularly is not enough. To boost your content reach and engagement, you must employ a solid video marketing strategy. OR use a project template that has standard bins already set up. These tutorials are most effective when used in conjunction with the editing software. Ideally, you should watch a tutorial then use the editing software to practice the techniques.
Collaborative editing: how should I work with the editor's draft and publish functions?
Editing suites such as Adobe Premiere now offer native features allowing for titles and 2D graphics to be correctly placed onto spherical video content. Stereoscopic content will require that titles or overlay graphics appear twice in the top and bottom (or left and right) channels of your video. In addition to creating a sequence project manager as you would for traditional video editing, with 360 you also have to keep the orientation of each scene in mind. Rough stitches don’t need to be perfect — you can take time to clean up shots later in the project, after you’ve determined which ones will make your final edit. At the time, the $199/month fee was a lot of money to my growing business, but looking back, that decision helped me to grow the business by taking the time to do the marketing that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the time to do.
Operations: Methods of Production (Overview)
Different production companies may have different definitions for what a “rough cut” really is. If it’s too rough around the edges, the viewer will have a hard time reading through the construction and won’t be able to make valuable comments. We’ve also found that if you’re working with clients, the rougher it is, the more they feel the need to add their own creative input. First, most clients and viewers aren’t trained to see through large holes in a film and it makes the quality of your work seem like much less than it is. Adding music as early as possible helps unify the look and feel of the piece as it is edited.
As soon as a draft is ready for review, the timeline is rendered and compressed, the file is uploaded, and the reviewers are notified automatically. Each reviewer (director, client, producer, etc) reviews the work-in-progress directly from a web browser or smartphone and sends timestamped comments back to the reviewer. Those comments can be downloaded into the NLE as markers so that the editor can respond with new changes. More and more productions of all sizes (from blockbuster films and TV shows to wedding videos) are using services like Frame.io to centralize all their creators, collaborators, and audience.
In addition to using a structure map similarly to how you would use a wall of index cards to track your story, you can also use it as a way to track your editorial progress through your first cut using colored labels.
Joined by our primary VFX supervisor Ben Kadie, we developed a plan to address the impact of VFX on 100-plus shots in our film.
Any number of workspaces can be created and can be assigned to individuals or entire teams.
But you will have the ability to leave time-stamped feedback, which makes it much easier for video professionals to interpret and implement requested changes.
As a production manager, you are now able to share a specific episode, scene or item for VFX, sound or subtitling. With a bitrate low enough to play out video over commercial internet product or mobile data, the visual quality of the images is still good enough for the director or the editor to prepare the edit. Solutions that are often limited in capacity or compromise visual quality or security.
Once you get over that 25-weddings-a-year mark, it makes a lot of sense for you to seriously look at outsourcing your jobs to a company that can guarantee you fast turnaround and consistent results. But until you reach that point, you have a good foundation above for getting to where you need to be from a time and efficiency standpoint. There are hundreds of YouTube videos out there reviewing computer parts, but suffice to say, you can build a decent PC for less than $2,000 that will take full advantage of Adobe’s suite of editing products. Regardless of whether your mixing workflow utilizes outboard gear, you need to understand more than just the principles behind compression and equalization. Foley is intended to cover human (and sometimes non human) interactions with objects. It is created by a Foley Artist watching the picture and performing relevant actions with various objects. These elements cover unnatural/otherworldly sounds, musical sound design or audio that must be manipulated and heavily layered to get the desired result. The Post Production Sound Team will take a step back at this stage, allowing the Location Sound Team to take care of the sound recording on set.

The major difference is that, when an editorial team is working together in the same office, they work off of a single set of shared files. The assistants need to be able to see what the editor has been working on, and vice versa. In a traditional workflow, if schedules are tight, the editor may have two separate in-person meetings, one with the director and another with the producer, who may give conflicting feedback. With asynchronous feedback, different reviewers can leave their comments project manager at different times, which is often even more important than distributed feedback. Many teams use Frame.io for review and feedback even though the editors and reviewers are in the same building.

Description of Film Post-Production Jobs
This is why a clear workflow can help teams keep projects on track. There is no room for excuses such as “I didn’t know it was my responsibility” or “That’s not my job” – things I’ve heard many times when working with clients. With a defined workflow, everyone who helps plan, create, and publish the content knows the process and how their individual tasks fit into it. While this is mostly just a glib line, it does reflect a wider belief in the industry that longer movies cost more to make than short ones. This stands to reason because for each minute of screentime you need to have the script written, sets built, costumes made, cast/crew hired, enough film stock / hard drives, editing time, etc.

Since they are the final stage of production, they are under huge pressure to make deadlines on time. Therefore, this can be a very stressful job and many may have to work nights or weekends close to deadlines. If you work as a post producer, you may spend significant amounts of time working on the computer in a dark room.
Lastly, the way that you transfer files from one location to another can take the form of traditional FTP, web-based transfer services, P2P (peer-to-peer) applications, or dedicated accelerated transfer utilities. If your film is to be shown at a film festival with 5.1 surround sound as well as online, you may want to request a separate mix for each. In addition, while film festivals may offer 5.1 surround, they rarely require it.

Many editors will argue that you should edit a piece without music first, and only add the music in at the very end. This advice usually comes from editors who have backgrounds in narrative filmmaking. However, in science and natural history programming, unlike fiction filmmaking, most scenes are built by the mood – a combination of the music and the visuals.
When working on your CV check it through (or ask someone else to) to see it reads well and is correctly formatted. Correct spelling and grammar are crucial; you have to stand out from the hundreds of other people applying for the role so silly errors will mean your CV automatically gets disregarded. Post-production companies are always looking for keen new entrants to take on the role of runner. If you look at the larger companies, the turnover of staff can be very high, not because people drop out but because progression can be quick for the right candidate. However, you should know if your dream job is working in production then working in post production isn’t for you.

But if the audio isn’t up to snuff, the whole project can be negatively affected. Therefore, it’s very important to pass the video file along to an audio professional after you’ve approved the final cut.
Good understanding of color and sound processes, roundtripping for color and soundmix. With these best practices and this workflow to start from, you should be well-equipped to perform in the present and adapt to whatever future may come. The final step in this video production workflow is to drag your captions file into Premiere Pro and position it over the video.

Audio is then worked on within the DAW, and then imported back into the NLE. The audio and video files are then married/exported into a mezzanine file, as noted above. So, we must encode our audio in a way that not only retains the audio fidelity of your project, but also so it can be decoded and played back by the viewer. A good rule of thumb is to create a mezzanine file in the highest quality you can without exceeding the quality of the highest resolution of video in your timeline. You can’t add image fidelity to media where it wasn’t originally present.

The VFX editor will then create a proxy with the same codec that’s being used for the rest of editorial and drop it back into the sequence to make sure that it works as planned. Many studios offer in-house reviews, but online reviewing methods are increasingly being used. It allows the filmmaker to drop in notes at specific points in the timeline, streamlining communication with the mixing house. VR video players have special decoders that tailor the audio experience depending on where the viewer is looking.
Development can take months or even years to get the project green-lit by a studio or funded independently and move into pre-production. Green-lighting a film means the studio has approved the idea and will finance the project and move into production. Once a project finds finance, it will move into the pre-production phase with an emphasis on shooting dates and time frame for the project to be finished.

or online, followed by a commercial or subsequent video, and found that the volume between the two are completely different. This is a major problem, not only for the enjoyment of the media you’re consuming, but because hearing damage can potentially occur at high volumes. Because of this, it’s common practice to migrate the audio work to an audio centric NLE, also called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
Post Production is a more controlled environment than production and far more predictable with a well defined workflow. The long hours of production can be stressful dealing with the tight schedules and the unknown variables and chaotic with the large number of people and the unfamiliar locations. Few people are involved, the hours are regular, schedules can be planned with precision, the amount of material to work with is finite.

And some steps may be moved around depending on your time, budget, or other needs. This stage in filmmaking takes time, and may be exhausting, but if you understand these basics, it’s manageable. Even though the Post-Production process may be coming to a close, you still need to worry aboutdistribution. Which brings us to the next most important point of them all — the editing process, more specifically, picture editing (we’ll get to sound editing soon).

This is why slimming down your NLE’s timeline is important, nobody wants to relink 300 media files by hand. The best method is to give the artist the working drive, or an identical drive so that there is no discrepancy in the file structures. In either case make sure to discuss what frame-rate, raster-dimensions, and delivery codecs you will be working with to reduce complications. High-quality codecs such as ProRes422, or ProRes4444 and dpx image sequences optimize media quality through the process. You’ve gotten picture lock, colored your footage, and brought it back into your NLE.

It all depends on the sonic needs of your project (for wide theatrical releases however, a surround format is usually universally required). As mentioned earlier, if your project is playing in an environment that may have unique and strict loudness guidelines, make sure you are aware of them and communicate this with your post audio team. It is important to understand what environment your project will be playing in and what specs that environment may require. If ignored, a project may fail quality control in preparation for broadcast and be unable to air until addressed. Individual networks may also have unique spec requirements that post audio should be made aware of.

From one platform, video creators can share content and receive organized feedback from collaborators, all in one location. Then, the editor will begin working by watching straight through each take and making notes, often by placing markers directly on the timeline or by moving their favorite takes to a separate track.
Non-broadcast professional video outlets, such as Netflix and Hulu, have defined their own standards for media delivery. As they are not beholden to traditional broadcast infrastructure and legacy set-top boxes, they can request higher fidelity media. This media is often very large, as VOD outlets will create compressed streaming versions for consumption by viewers on a wide variety of devices. If there isn’t money in the budget for a loop group, and the director is made aware of this, they won’t show up on the mix days expecting to hear detailed crowd work and customized reactions during specific scenes. When it comes to film sound mixing, the craft is largely looked at as an artform.

It is important to remember that picture is oftentimes more malleable than music. Music has a multitude of factors that make even a small edit noticable if not done correctly. Tempo, rhythm, instrument decay, and sustain are just a few factors that can throw off the pacing and groove of the music and the project as a whole. The music edit is the process of smoothing out how each song or music cue will fade in, fade out, and transition. If music is specially composed for the project however, this step may simply be a check-up.

Even if the colorist doesn’t use those LUTs directly in the grading process, those LUTs provide a valuable reference for what the DP was thinking, and so it’s important that all of the LUTs are passed through the pipeline. Even though all digital cameras are capable of recording sound and video together in the same file, it’s still very common for the film’s sound to be recorded separately. At the end of the day (and sometimes also in the middle of the day), the DIT preps the dailies and sends them off to the producers to view, and to the editors to begin creating assembly edits. Just export a H.264 version of your video, and include that with what you deliver to your VFX artist. It can be easy to find tutorials on how to do specific effects, but figuring out how to smoothly integrate those effects into your film poses it’s own challenges.
Top 5 Questions About Working in Post-Production
The films negative (or the digital files) have primary colour correction and colour matching applied to the rushes or first cut of the film. A colourist is also responsible for ensuring the film is broadcast legal as there are strict requirements from broadcasters about luminance levels (brightness) and chroma (colour). In the Cable VOD model, premium channels buy the rights to stream your film to their subscribers.
Non-broadcast professional video outlets, such as Netflix and Hulu, have defined their own standards for media delivery. As they are not beholden to traditional broadcast infrastructure and legacy set-top boxes, they can request higher fidelity media. Export Comments to Project Management Tools
As with any project, having a workflow can help you manage resources effectively, invest your time efficiently, and keep different teams and individual contributors on task—even if you’re working remotely. Managing video production requires input from many different teams, creatives, and contributors—and that can get messy fast.
Make sure to involve yourself in the technical process as much as possible, troubleshooting, ingesting and EDL creation should give you some hands-on time with the equipment. Spend time in the MCR (Master Control Room) to become familiar with the codecs and workflows of the various formats currently available.
