THE ALBATROSS — TAYLOR SWIFT
A popular symbol of the albatross is found in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” which tells the story of a sailor who shoots an innocent albatross which he believed to be an ill-omen, cursing himself and his crew.

forever will be so funny to me that buffy introduces their whole lore of vampires as literally soulless, unable to feel genuine human emotions, "a demon sets up shop in your body and it looks like you and it has your memories but it's not you", and then they introduce spike and drusilla and its like. well clearly all that wasn't fucking true.

As you might be aware I have big feelings about all besnouted creatures, but recently something has been grating on me. Sometimes, when people draw a snout animal, they draw the snout as a nose with the mouth as a separate entity underneath. This is a stylistic choice I greatly dislike because a snout or trunk is, by definition
A COMBINATION OF THE NOSE AND UPPER-LIP.
Tumblr media
You can see here that the snout is not a separate entity from the mouth in these mammals, but is a fleshy protuberance emanating from the upper jaw.
Tumblr media
You can see in this illustration how a more anatomically accurate snout position gives an anthropomorphic pig a degree of charm that an inaccurate snout position does not.
Snout positioning can make or break a character design for me.

feeling a little insane about buffy taking a ring off of spike in "harsh light of day" -- one which makes him impervious to sunlight -- in an episode that's largely about her post-angel relationship trauma. and then sending that ring south to angel, but the ring cant stay with him, danger and destruction follows, and it has to be destroyed ...
Tumblr media
and then spike putting a ring on buffy in "something blue," and it's serious and it's not, it's parody and it's not, it's the wacky hijinks spike and buffy are engaged and are as campy about it as possible episode and it's also the, okay well the spell only said you had to get engaged it didnt say you had to act like that. and it's also serious in how it foreshadows everyone's plots in season 6, the season when the constraints of story has fallen away and we're dealing in the genre of realism -- buffy is in a relationship with spike and has intense but repressed feelings for him, willow is abusing magic in a way that directly correlates to her breakup and she is also unaware of the extent of the pain she is causing to others, xander and anya's domesticity and relationship are being thwarted from all sides and attacked by demons that both are (their own doubts, anya's return to being a vengeance demon // the demons attacking them in 4x08 are physically real and causing danger) and aren't (xander's supposed future self feeding him false visions of his marriage // the demons attacking them aren't real in that they evaporate as soon as the spell is broken) real. and meanwhile giles is distanced from the main cast -- by his blindness in 4x09 and by his leaving for england in season 6.
like. something blue starts off as a joke episode and it never stops being a joke episode but etc etc always a joke always serious! a joke but there is so much truth and weight in it! also season 4 has only two major spuffy interactions bc letting them interact after something blue would have been too powerful for the timeline dfkljsflkfds so literally. the main episodes where the spike plot and the buffy plot intersect directly in ways that aren't also about the other scoobies are: buffy takes a ring off spike -> spike puts a ring on buffy!!!!! 4x03 - 4x09 narrative bookends in this twisty weird way and also both dealing with the legacy of angel -- buffy and spike in their campy vampire wedding planning vs. the terror and doom of angel's wedding dream about buffy in 3x20. the parody of buffy's next vampire lover. well, where would Angel like to register? and can we have the photographer Angel would've wanted? and the flowers Angel would have liked?
and i mean. if we're talking about vampire relationship jewelry the claddagh ring is right there to start this cycle off -- the claddagh as this serious and laden and capital-R romantic symbol that also never gets to be realized, because the day buffy receives that promise is also the day their relationship as it was dies. it's the serious promise of romance that is never realized because time only moves one way and everything changes from that point. versus the skull ring!!! the skull ring which is RIDICULOUS with its stupid ruby eyes and part of a joke episode and like ???? the claddagh ring which is presented seriously by both the characters and the narrative. but then which angel after losing his soul continues to wear in parody. and which becomes a symbol for how those romantic and Romantic ideals can never be realized for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
versus the skull ring!! which is narratively presented as a joke but which the characters are dead serious about. buffy is glowing from the skull ring, she doesn't even remark on it being a skull or being ugly or being ridiculous, and it's all of those things, it's just giles did you see my ring? and the campiness of that, that for all the something blue as an episode is a joke, for spike and buffy it's something they're playing profoundly straight (lmao), and which is later made serious by how it echoes the later narrative. even the rings themselves are playing on this same chiasmus!!!! the claddagh with a heart, a symbol of beating life, and comes to represent the undead corpse of buffy and angel's relationship for the rest of the season. versus the skull, which is unknowing the precursor to the romantic relationship that will live through the rest of the series...
and then?????? chosen??????????????????????
Tumblr media
literally chosen calling back to this same trade-off just dfklajdlkfjasdf;??????? buffy takes the ring from spike and gives it to angel. spike gives a ring to buffy and it's about , among other things, campiness and futurity past the point of the angel trauma and drama and mythos. and then in chosen angel arrives with another piece of jewelry, intending to wear it himself, and buffy sends him away, gives the jewelry to spike, in this almost full reversal of "harsh light of day." and then???? to make things worse and by worse i mean make me more insane ..... literally harsh light of day has buffy taking the ring off spike and he starts to burn ..... chosen has spike wearing the necklace to the end .... buffy clasping his hand .... also i just want to point out that buffy is holding spike with her left hand .. ahem ... ring finger hand ... and spike is a lefty and thus his ring hand is his right and he's holding buffy with his right hand ..... they are grasping each other in the site of their s4 marriage parody rings .... and they are bursting into flames together and then spike is exploding into sunlight ..... and he is dead but also his shadow is fully reconciled into her and so they will never really be apart ......... anyway the television program buffy the vampire said hahahah wouldnt it be funny if we said spike and buffy got married but then u look at the text more closely and it's like ... ok so when ARENT spike and buffy getting married. ....
