armand and louis dress similar (but not the same) in dubai--an externalization of their fusing, of louis being subsumed into their relationship while armand grips the wheel--but many never seem to read louis as gnc when louis so clearly is (and armand isn't.....) it's all antiblackness always has been. ppl see armand as shrinking bc they see louis as aggressive.

"but i was never her father" is once again haunting me like. as horribly as he treats her in season 1, it's obvious lestat thinks of himself as claudia's parent. "EYE am your maker" etc etc, in fact i'd argue the whole reason he treats her the specific brand of awful that he does is BECAUSE he's her father. because he thinks he has the right to punish her for perceived transgressions, to teach her a lesson, to "prepare" her for the real world.
and i like to think lestat has actually done some soul searching in his sadsack shack and realized that he had no right, none, to treat her like that. but i think, in realizing that his actions were never justifiable, he's run from his responsibility as her parent even after her death. that way we wouldn't have to admit that he'd failed her so completely, that he'd killed his child.
he probably thinks of is as the only way he has left to honor her memory, to finally respect her desire to be free of him. and yet. i think it's also to soothe his guilt. and yet. "she looked at me at the end like a child, looking to her father. but i was never..."
i hope the cognitive dissonance eat him away inside foreverrrrr 😊

ive thought about armand and louis' feelings about daniel's eyes turning orange, i've thought about how daniel himself feels about it. now time to wonder about what lestat might feel if he ends up pissing daniel off so much that he jumps out of his seat and his shades come off and lestat sees armand's burning eyes glaring back at him

He would much rather have a maître in Louis and I think that goes back to his other previous partners […] or people that he's had in his life. [...] It’s protection and I feel that he kind of sees Louis as his protector. | Assad Zaman

Things I am not emotionally prepared to see in the post-rescue timeline (but are inevitable):
•Shauna getting pregnant with Callie and being haunted by constant flashbacks/hallucinations of her pregnancy with Wilderness Baby. Giving birth to Callie but feeling a cold, hollow disconnection because she’s terrified to love another child.
•Nat in a string of relationships/hookups with toxic men who treat her like shit because that’s what she’s been conditioned to believe she deserves. Watching her relapse after being sober in the wilderness. Enduring drug overdoses, failed rehab attempts, and nights in jail. Watching her live a lonely, nomadic life with no home.
•Travis returning home and having to lie to his mother about how his brother and father died, swallowing the knowledge that she believes the wrong son survived. Having to walk past Javi’s room everyday and see all of his pictures and belongings still strewn all over the house.
•Taissa and Van breaking up, with Van privately wondering if staying in the wilderness like Tai wanted would have meant they’d still be together. Van having to watch Tai move on publicly and act like she’s unaffected by it all.
•Lottie slipping into catatonia and being shuffled through psych wards for most of her adult life, which is exactly what she feared would happen and why she never wanted to leave the wilderness.
•Misty losing contact with the other survivors and returning to being the desperately lonely social outcast. Filling her time hanging pictures of her and the team on her walls and keeping tabs on the other YJs to maintain the feeling of belonging she once had with them.
•Nat and Travis locked in toxic cycles, pulling each other back into relapse, unable to stay apart even as they both know they’re poison together, being both each other’s refuge and ruin. Seeing the how their suicide pact comes to be.
•Shauna losing all of her potential when she marries Jeff and assumes the facade of a quiet, docile housewife.
•The survivors returning home and having to face the grieving, questioning families of the people they killed and ate.
•Media scrutiny, invasive questions, and the survivors seeing their trauma turned into tabloid headlines.
•Cutting contact with one another to avoid the pain of shared memories, leaving each survivor isolated and deprived of the rare bond with people who actually understand what they endured.
•All of them wishing they could go back.

the way shiv’s affection and the complexity of her dynamic towards tom represents my comprehension of affections is actually terrifying. she confessed to cheating on their wedding night. she can’t bring herself to say she loves him but she’ll put herself and her brother on the line so tom doesn’t go to jail. she won’t answer his calls but he’s listed as her emergency contact. she’s planning divorce and sleeping in his university of minnesota t-shirt. she wants a real relationship cause hurt and betrayal and brutal honesty are her only way of knowing the love is there. attempts at shiv’s character analysis always bug me cause nobody seems to GET IT

ok so ive always found the “succession is modern king lear” take (as it’s generally understood by the people who say this) to be pretty stupid since the idea of a powerful patriarch passing down his wealth and power to his children is not a concept invented by king lear and it is not actually what king lear is about! if you read a wikipedia summary of king lear maybe you could delude yourself into thinking that it somehow pioneered the ancient concept of inheritance, or something. if anything succession feels far more like a modern take on greek tragedy, the house of atreus, the oedipus cycle, etc. rhea even calls kendall “oedipus roy.” or another great example of this is when kendall says “maybe the poison drips though,” which people are correctly quoting as a thesis statement name drop, and is the primary idea underpinning all those sophocles and aeschylus and euripides plays about cursed families. BUT, i do think roman’s speech, about how they’re all bullshit, how he’s nothing, kendall’s nothing, shiv’s nothing, it’s all nothing, is actually extremely king lear core of him, and that line coupled with his inability to give a shallow speech flattering the idea of logan as a titan of industry (a king, if you will) an episode prior is actually what makes him cordeliacoded when it’s all said and done. so i will grant succession this: it may not be a modern retelling of king lear when it comes to its plot, but it does echo it in its thematic mission of exposing the evil of institutions/ideology society takes for granted, of revealing the rot beneath the floorboards and the hollow rhetoric of empty power. succession, like king lear, engages in a process of antireification, of pulling back the curtain to reveal nothing.
