The above images show experimentation samples of an idea of drawing onto asete with perment marker, then placing the used asete over my backing images. The idea was that it would be quicker then then stitching detail.
Before drawing onto the asete i secured it over the photo using masking tape over the four coners, as seen in the bottom image. Then if i was happy with the finnished images i then used clear double sided tape to stick the acete on to the photo without leaving any un inteded fixtures.
Although this method proved to be time efficent i was unhappy with how the end results compared to that of stich work. The broader tips of the perminate markers made it hard and near impossible to create the fine designs, meaning alot of last minitue changes occured. Secondly due to the texture of asete and contrast of the backing images, the vibrancy of the colours where weakend which took away from the context of my work.
So there for i have concluded that I shall carry out my original plans on stitching overlaying detail into my photos.

Ara Roselani
Wormsloe - Savannah, Georgia
The tones of this piece are dark and muted with an eerily warm feel due to the browning of leaves, suggesting the start of autumn. This creates an ominous atmosphere, almost as if the pathway is malevolent, although i imagine some may interpret it as peaceful as despite the leading lines of the path suggesting a single route that cannot be deviated from, with the trees creating a impenetrable wall, you can almost feel a breeze that would set the branches swaying. The colours are again earthy which is a common theme among her work, but do not deviate in hue a great deal, the whole image seems to blend into an almost unending tunnel with the only contrasting feature being the fence bordering the entrance to the wooded route.

the ladies of the forest
This work stands out to me because of the setting scene, the way the person is framed among a natural surrounding with foliage being present in the fore, middle and background.Composition is well considered and applies photography techniques such as the golden ratio to decide on the framing. The tonal range of the photograph is not overly dramatic due to the more subtle lighting, I feel this works as the figure has a lighter tone that catches the eye while it becomes gradually darker towards the edges, while a harsher difference may have been interesting i believe that this more delicate approach is highly effective.
The lines in the photograph are the uneven natural defining lines of the tree and therefore also places emphasis on the more flowing lines and form of the figure, while the trees and leaves have almost harsh defining edges the figure seems softer in comparison.
The colours seen in nature are dark hues of green and brown, even the clothes the woman is wearing are dark greens and redish browns, showing earthen colours that are even reflected in the figures urban/ginger hair, this relationship implies careful planning to create the empathy between nature and humanity.

Forever
Another surrealist piece, this time the tree is representational of a person, the form being clothed, yet almost stuffed, in a jacket with branches hanging to become arms, once again the main focus is in a central position and the image is monochrome, with the contrast being mostly subtle apart from the white jacket which stands out, in what i believe to be a very intentional fashion.

Demons
The photograph is a surrealist piece and stays true to the dream like distortion of reality that the movement is famous for, it shows nature enveloping a man, seeming to embrace his body yet still holds a distinct feeling of entrapment.
The image is monochrome, black and white, this means that the strong darkly contrasted blacks of the suit stand apart from the softer greys of the branches and the soot white of the clouds and mist behind.
The symmetrical nature of the branches converging and then separating again create a set of leading lines that draw your eye to the center, the totally symmetrical background combined with these trees frame the figure in its central position.
This has inspired me to experiment with the use of symmetry, drawing the eye to a central point.

stoicism #2
The vibrant green of the overlying leaves contrast heavily with the pale browns of the hair and skin, however still keeping to a natural colour pallet, while skin tones and hair colour blend slightly more efficiently with the rough grey background which leaves the greens and whites of the overlay to stand out.
The face is mostly centrally placed, with the figure looking down. This detracts from the figure as an individual, leaving the audience paying more attention to the combination of, the more brightly contrasted, overlying green and white with the figure. The green leaf sections almost appear to be following a miniature golden ratio of its own separate from the whole image, showing careful placing of each aspect within the image.
i can take the ideas of composition into my own work considering placement of my stitched section on top of my portraiture, i will also be able to consider colour and whether it should blend or contrast.

en las nubes
The figure and clouds are a mix of both light/pale tones to create a more subtle merge with the portrait image, while the birds flying towards the opening in the clouds are a strong dark tone, this creates a sense of depth that is also aided by the darker background beneath the figure, which shows lightening contrast starting at the lower part of the image then brightening as the image continues upward.
The birds are the forefront of the image creating a line that leads the eye towards the face, i feel that the golden ration may also have been applied to create an effective composition that holds the attention of the audience.
The artwork is reminiscent of a surrealist piece of work and i feel this creates dream like approach which will be something that will be apparent in my stitch work were the sewn layers are an addition to the image.

Final Show
The above Image is of the final set up for the exhibition at the College Road Campus. The central images are my final outcomes, framing and scripting these are the majority of negatives used to create the images.
However the below image shows the plaque next to my work, showing the themes carried through my work and stating the concept behind it.

- Artist Research -
I have chosen this image because it shows relationships between people and nature which is what i am aiming to achieve within my own work.
the image is created using double exposure, overlaying images. the two images overlaying the people are opposites to each other, as are the people themselves. the girl is covered, with a cityscape overlay, whereas the man is uncovered and overlayed with natural scenery
i shall consider using body language within my photography to aid my themes making them clearer.

- Ideas for Presentation -
1) initially the idea was to have the original negatives shown on a projector which people could flick through using a button, while the end products would be displayed in a little book by the side, while over hanging this would be the development of ideas, overall an installation.
2) the idea was then minorly changed to having the final out comes displayed either side of the projection
3) I had then decided that there was too many enlargements showing the development process, making the overall presentation look ‘messy’ distracting from the main themes
4) after visiting an exhibition i decided that simpler was better so i excluded the projection of the negatives.
5) the final presentation. i have cut the final series of images in half as i decided that the five asete images did not represent the themes as well as the stitch images. this also leaves room for a simple effective layout.

the overall outcome to my project work.
-Created-
The images are created by multiple layers. the backing unseen layer is formed of masking tape. this ensures the image does not tear during the stitch process.
The secondary portrait layer is made using film photography where i have taken the images and then developed the fil and enlarged the image to the apropriete size using the correct equipment.
Finally the third and topmost layer is created by hand stitching into the images using hand drawn designs and over laying them with this guid and producing needle holes to show the direction of the design.
- Indevidual Images-
Top Left:
the backing image had a dark contrast however i decided to keep the image like this as i felt it showed up the colour of the thread better. the person is looking dull and bored however nature is flowing out of their head showing not only an active mind but a link to wild thoughts, a ‘wild child’
Top Right:
again an overly darkened contrasted image, however this time the finer detail is not added over the figure but around it. the butterflies are bursting out of the figure almost forming wings. this is showing freedom and also a sense of releasing the wildness within
Middle:
a more fairly contrasted backing image, this time the wild is shown through the camera lens, capturing the scene and shows expression.
Bottom Left:
an evenly contrasted image, however suffered some damage during the development process, almost giving and underwater theme, however i think this has worked well with the overall image. seeing as how the figure was stood with head tilted back and arms raised i thought it would be interesting to have antlers spawning from the head atrracting the wild life that follows, showing an acceptence of nature.
Bottom Right:
another evenly contrasted image. the person in the backing image looked upset so i decided to create a design where wildlife spawned from this emotion creating a link between the two themes.
- Running Project Themes -
Wild: shown through wild life inthe stitch
Relationships: shown through non obvious links between humans and nature
Black & White: shown more noticable through black and white film photography

samples of stitch.
the first was an attempt at a more complex, detailed design. where as it was turning out well i soon realised i would have to look at more simple designs as even with a masking tape backing the card was begining to tear. the next samples where of a simpler design created of two separete layers. these where more successful so where developed further and used in the final stitched outcomes.

Transferring To Asete Issue
when transferring research to asete the scaling on the asete images was incorrect.
Cause:
- By incorrect scaling setting inputted to te copier when using A3 image, transferring to A4 scale
Solution(s):
- check scale settings before printing
