Artist Statement
For my Final Portfolio Project, I wanted to create a series of portraits I would genuinely enjoy working on. Thus, I decided to create photographs based upon some of my favorite childhood fairy tales.
For the portraits’ theme, I mainly mimicked Disney outfits the characters are often portrayed in, using similar props and colors in my shots. Since most of these stories are whimsical and childlike, (though with darker undertones in some cases) I tried to maintain the same playful atmosphere through the use of bright tones and shades.
Out of the numerous fairy tale characters, I picked Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel, the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, Pocahontas, Snow White, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Merida, and Belle.
Because I wished to embody the character as well as their story as much as possible, and in order to make the portraits as recognizable to the characters portrayed, I tried to include props or costumes that refer to their stories: for example, I posed with a fork to allude to the fork Ariel used to comb her hair in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Since these are all self-portraits, I filmed at home against a white sheet using my DSLR, though I would have liked to have more varied backgrounds if they weren’t self-portraits. However, the white allowed for the subject to be the sole focus of the photograph, as well as great contrast in colors.
