A New PayPal Scam to Watch Out For

Today I learned about 2 new PayPal scams floating around that you need to watch out for. The first one I read about on The Morning Call, it looks to be one of your ordinary Phishing style scams. The second scam consists of an elaborate story about a fake software. A site called Wealth Artisan wrote about it in great detail. The application is called the PayPal Money Adder. So, let’s dive in with my analysis of these two lame attempts at stealing your money.

PayPal Phishing: Do You Recognize This Charge?

The scam is pretty simple, you receive an email asking you to confirm a transaction. You see that it is a transaction that you didn’t initiate, so you click the “Cancel” button. You’re then redirected to a login page, which looks like PayPal’s, but it is not.

Once you login, the fraudsters have your login information and can clean your account out. It’s pretty ridiculous the amount of effort these people put into taking your money from you. But that’s not all I have. I want to share with you another scam I stumbled upon.

Another PayPal Scam: The PayPal Money Adder

This PayPal scam is a bit interesting to me. Instead of trying to trick you, it attempts to target your want for money. The story goes like this:

There is a magical software that literally adds money to your PayPal account. You just tell it what your PayPal address is, you select the amount of money and click a button. And, as if by magic, the money appears in your PayPal account.

...except it doesn’t.

In many places, the PayPal Money Adder scam is used to make fun of desperate people, but it appears a few opportunistic people have made websites and applications that appear to be the PayPal Money Adder.

The ones I’ve seen so far seem to make you complete a survey, which the owner of the site undoubtedly gets paid for, then you get nothing in return. I’m sure some of the other applications are intended to get you to give up your PayPal login credentials.
