Very funny to see Super Mario theorycrafters getting worked up about what Pauline being a little girl in Donkey Kong Bananza implies for the notional timeline, given that a. the specific version of Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong Country franchise showing up in any sort of Super Mario crossover media has literally never made sense timeline-wise, but this is the final straw? and b. I feel like "why is she a child?" is eliding the much more pressing question of "why is she a rock?"

serious question, what IS pey wet mate and why is everyone talking about it now?
pey wet is a condiment (?) used in one specific english town (Wigan, Greater Manchester) and apparently nowhere else. it's uh, just pea water. like the pea-ish residue you can strain out of a serving of peas.
there's a viral video from about five years ago where a guy goes to a chippie in wigan and gets a few really cheap extremely british sounding foods including a "smack barm pey wet", which is a potato sandwich with pea residue on it. I have no idea why it's popular again now but it is a fun video so I'm not complaining

"hoo hoo electricity" "ow" "ow" "ow"
It is my firm belief that my desire to stick my fingers into electrical outlets as a toddling creature presaged other crevice-related desires. One can infer other pastimes based on my present-day predilections

what farming items in mmorpgs has taught me: i used to think using ice trays to make ice cubes was free but after thinking about it i have to pay the electric bill to power the freezer so every moment that i’m not freezing new trays of ice cubes is a moment that i’m underutilizing the freezer and increasing the cost of ice cubes. i have to constantly swap out ice trays for new ice cubes on an hourly rotation on a 24 hour basis or else i won’t produce the maximum amount of ice cubes possible and will underutilize the full potential of my electric bill. i need to stop using all other appliances and utilities in my home to make more ice cubes

shinzo abe day was incredible. still not over seeing all the rumours about what happened, joining everyone in wondering how the fuck a shotgun assassination could have happened in japan, and then seeing the first photo of the doohickey

Some mathematicians claim they can visualize R^4, or even higher-dimensional spaces. I think this is probably possible for the human mind to do, in principle; the human mind often proves surprisingly flexible. But I think it probably takes a lot of concerted practice, and because you are stretching your mind beyond its intended limits in a purely-internal, imaginative way with no external reference points to check against, I think it probably has some things in common with certain types of meditative practice.
It's also common to hear mathematicians say that if humans had visual intuition for dimensions higher than 3, higher-dimensional geometry may have advanced much farther, since visual intuition is so often crucial in thinking of proofs.
So, ok, I suspect that AI will obviate the utility of this before it could ever have the chance to get off the ground, but this all makes me imagine a world where techniques for learning to visualize higher dimensions are well-known and practiced, and have become a functional necessity for being a working geometer in higher-than-3-dimensions. And these techniques require a lot of persistent practice and training, which (by the nature of the thing) is hard to precisely communicate to students. So part of becoming a geometer involves training in what is basically a meditative practice, where, à la Zen, much of the process involves not directly teaching the student but giving them prompts and mental exercises that are meant to trigger internal, incommunicable revelation. But instead of enlightenment it's geometric intuition. And so if we're getting a math PhD in, say, differential equations or something, it's mostly like it is today. But if your PhD is in low-dimensional topology there's like a whole monastic apprenticeship style thing that just comes along with it. People sometimes drive themselves insane. People sometimes drive themselves insane.
