The Different Varieties of Goldfish (Part 1)
The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a relatively small member of the carp family Cyprinidae of the order Cypriniformes. Native to East Asia, it was first selectively bred in Ancient China more than a thousand years ago, and several distinct breeds have since been developed.

The common goldfish is a breed of goldfish with no other differences from its living ancestor, the Prussian carp, other than its color and shape. Common goldfish come in a variety of colors with the most common variation being orange.

Comet goldfish. Photo credit to goldfisho.com
The comet is a single-tailed goldfish bred in the United States. It is similar to the common goldfish except slightly smaller and slimmer. It is mainly distinguished by its long deeply forked tail, resembling a comet.

Shubunkin goldfish. Photo credit to tropical-fish-keeping.com
Shubunkins are similar to the common goldfish and comet goldfish in appearance. However, the Shubunkins are calico goldfish; they possess nacreous scales with overlapping patches of red, white, blue, grey and black (along with dark speckles). These overlaps normally extend to the finnage of Shubunkins.

Ryukin goldfish. Photo credit to goldfisho.com
The Ryukin (琉金 Ryūkin) is a short deep-bodied fancy goldfish with a characteristic hump in the shoulder region. It has been so named because it was said to have arrived in Japan through the Ryukyu Islands, now Okinawa Prefecture, which lies between Taiwan and Japan.

Fantail goldfish. Photo credit to Wernher Krutein on pixels.com
The Fantail is the western form of the Ryukin that possesses an egg-shaped body, a high dorsal fin, a long quadruple caudal fin, and no shoulder hump. Its fins are less developed than the Ryukin.

Pearlscale goldfish. Photo credit to tropical-fish-keeping.com
The Pearlscale (or Chinshurin in Japanese) is a spherical-bodied fancy goldfish with doubled finnage similar to the fantail. The characteristic feature of the Pearlscale is its thick, domed scales with pearl-like appearance.

Curled-gill goldfish. Photo credit to Briistol Aquarists Society
The Curled-gill owes its name from the out-turned appearance of its gill covers. Resembling Ryukin goldfish, it has a fantail-shaped body with long finnage all round as well as a deeply forked tail. It is typically metallic orange in color.

Tosakin goldfish. Photo credit to practicalfishkeeping.co.uk
The Tosakin tail fin opens and spreads flat and wide horizontally with the leading edges flipping under once or even twice. Hence, it is considered a “top-view” fish and is traditionally kept in large shallow bowls or small ponds to be viewed from above.

Veiltail goldfish. Photo credit to goldfish2care4.com
The hallmark of the Veiltail is its lengthy and graceful double tail which is square-edged and without any forking or indentation between the lobes. They are not good swimmers but can be kept with other fancy goldfish.
Other varieties include the egg-fish, pompom, lionhead, ranchu, oranda, bubble eye, celestial eye, bubble eye, telescope eye and butterfly tail. These varieties will be posted in the next part of “The Different Varieties of Goldfish”

Digital Art Commissions
First off, I would appreciate it if this post got more reblogs than likes. Likes are great, but I really need to get the word out there in case anyone would be interested.
I need to buy bugs for Toast. Yeah sure, I can just buy crickets and meal worms from Pet Smart, but they don’t sell everything I wanna give her. That, or the shipments are totally dead (a friend of mine said their wax worms were all dead, and the employee even asked if she still wanted to buy them). So, I need money to order bugs online.
I don’t have a job right now, so I’m willing to offer art commissions. I have a simple cartoon style that I draw (mostly) animals in. I am trying to add a dash of realism to my art, but its hard and I think commissions would be great practice. I can draw your pets, whether it be reptiles, fish, cats, or dogs! I will limit how many commissions I take because I want to make sure everyone gets what they paid for. Some may be more difficult than others so I might have to spend more time on them than others.
It will be $5 per pet. If you’re interested, please send me a message. You must be able to pay through paypal.
In order for me to draw your pets, you will need to provide at least 3 -preferably good quality- photos at different angles so I can be sure to draw any markings as correctly as possible. If you want me to draw a hat or bow, or some other kind of accessory, just let me know!
I will take three commissions at a time. First come, first serve.
I will update the post if all three slots are filled.

He only does support snorts!

Hey guys. I could use some support.
I have to go get surgery in a few weeks, and I'm getting kind of nervous. Its just a tonsillectomy, and it's only going to last 20mins max, but its my first surgery and I am nervous as heck.
Please keep me in your thoughts and ask your fish for words of wisdom and strength for me.
