Message From The Finance Officer
The finance function is central to any organization. The strength or weakness of the finance function will mean the difference between failure and success of any entity.
The University of Nairobi Finance department derives authority from Part IV, Section 30-33, of the University of Nairobi Act, 2012, and other statutory and regulatory provisions.
The department is charged with the responsibility of designing and implementing sound and effective systems for the management of University resources.
Currently the department has a staff strength of 165, spread throughout all University campuses.  It is headed by the Finance Officer who is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance).
During the last seven years the department has undertaken various developments in order to address challenges with regard to efficiency in service delivery:-
Recruitment and training of staff in professional competence.
In liaison with ICT department, developed the SMIS and UMIS systems for student accounts management and budgetary control.
Acquisition of FIMS, the modular financial system currently in final stage of implementation.
Participated in tandem with other departments/units of the University in development of strategic plans, performance contracts, ISO quality management system and service delivery instruments which are guiding the University to achieve its Vision and Mission.
Embarked on income generating activities – Business Center, maximization on investments, and financial advisory services.
The department has managed to meet the targets set in compliance with statutory obligations/requirements during this period.
Arising from the measures instituted by the department as well as intensification of income generating activities undertaken in various campus colleges, the University has been able to reduce the cumulative deficit from an all time high of Ksh. 2 billion to a surplus of Ksh.180 million as at June 30, 2011.
In our effort to keep abreast of current developments and good practice in efficient service delivery, we have computerized most of the financial processes.  Activation of the remaining modules in FIMS will be done in the first half of next financial year.  As part of our mandate to reduce cost and improve efficiency, we are dispatching salary pay slips through staff email addresses.
In conclusion, I would like to encourage staff to familiarize themselves with the documentation in the University intranet as well as the home page of the University website for the latest events.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff in the department for the support they have accorded me during this period, and look forward for the same in the future.  I am optimistic that with your support and the team spirit we have built, we shall realize our vision.
