uhm. the more i think about it, the more i think maybe your wheel of YA titles including the option of "homoerotic" is maybe unideal??
bc i was like "oh, like homerotic tension, homoerotic subtext where nothing sexual happens? makes sense for YA, since the genre usually has 14 - 19 year-olds" plus like? i am also queer, sure, i love queer books
but then i googled the word definition on Merriam Webster's dictionary just to be sure i was properly defining the word
and uh
maaaaaybe "homoerotic" is not the best word to apply to a YA title?
bc Merriam Webster defined it as "of, relating to, or involving sexual activity between people of the same sex" and then nailed it in saying "specifically : marked by, revealing, or portraying sexual desire between people of the same sex". there was no other definition listed
i then checked Dictionary.com, and it has two definitions:
(especially of art, literature, drama, or the like) using symbolism, allusions, situations, etc., that invoke sexual attraction or activity between people of the same gender
having sexual attraction to people of one's own sex or gender, especially when that attraction is repressed
obviously "sexual attraction" is fine, bc that is whar homosexual and heterosexual is either way. and from that, (2) is likely moreso what was meant than "invok[ing] sexual [...] activity", i get that
as a final check, i did also look to wikipedia, which said as its introductory paragraph of its "Homoerotic" article:
Homoeroticism is sexual attraction between members of the same sex, including both male–male and female–female attraction.[1] The concept differs from the concept of homosexuality: it refers specifically to the desire itself, which can be temporary, whereas "homosexuality" implies a more permanent state of identity or sexual orientation. It has been depicted or manifested throughout the history of the visual arts and literature and can also be found in performative forms; from theatre to the theatricality of uniformed movements (e.g., the Wandervogel and Gemeinschaft der Eigenen). According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it is "pertaining to or characterized by a tendency for erotic emotions to be centered on a person of the same sex; or pertaining to a homo-erotic person."
it then showed "An Etruscan fresco painting depicting two male lovers having sex" as part of this paragraph
so
im learning new things about this word, and it's not just "vague" in the same way as "a sword as a phallic symbol" is vague
anyway, im just assuming youre in the same boat as me and are going "oh. i did not think that was the definition of that word", im not assuming malice or anything, i think the internet made both of us assume "homoerotic subtext" = "homoerotic can only be used as a form of subtext, no sexual content can happen" when, in reality, "homoerotic" is moreso on the erotica/litoerotica side of novels and the word "subtext" in "homoerotic subtext" was doing all the non-graphic-sexual-activity heavy-lifting
and, traditionally, from what i understand of book genres in recent times(? im bad with genres overall in books and music and film, i just like what i like) is:
Young Adult: main characters are generally 14 - 19 years old (can not feature sexual content, far as i am aware?? i hope?) (but can feature romance and be queer, obviously)
New Adult: main characters are generally 19 - 24 years old (can feature sexual content, but doesnt have to)
Adult: main characters are generally 25+ years old (can feature sexual content, but doesnt have to)
Erotica/Litoerotica: main characters are 18+ years old (does feature sexual content)
which google more or less affirmed ftom several sites. granted, New Adult is (i think?) p new so there's some books published in the early 2000s and whatnot that were genre-labeled as Young Adult when current genre-labels would have had them categorized as New Adult. it is possible you were thinking of Young Adult with a different age-category than i was as a reflection of these newer genre-labels; that miscommunication is also possible
regardless: my point is i think there has been some accidental misapplication of diction somewhere??
idk, im not labeling you as anything malicious. i think this was accidental clumsiness, at worst; or a miscommunication otherwise (maybe it was obvious to you that Young Adult = 19+ years old, but it wasnt to me, idfk). and i dont think you have to explain yourself either, im not asking for an apology or anything. like i said, im not labeling you as anything malicious
im just like "...the more i think about this title i got, the more i think i should give op a sincere and well-meaning heads-up about the ambiguity here". bc, like i said, i originally thought "homoerotic" didnt have to be sexual activity either but it apparently TENDS to mean such?? idk, im fresh from googling and am not a dictionary or genre expert
and you dont HAVE to change it. bc, like, its for silly goofs
i just wanted to mention it as a heads-up so youre at least aware of the chance of people taking the applications of YA × homoerotic in bad faith? im not going to be a bad-faith-er. i live by the motto "assume ignorance before malice". but i am aware of tumblr/the internet as a culture, and how some people can take the bad faith take they have an be aggressive. so this is me going "hey, just know to brace for the chance of that" because im an anxious overthinker who catastrophisizes a lot. but its also possible nobody would ever take the combination in bad faith, and im being paranoid instead
so, like i said, i dont assume malice from you and dont think you need to justify/explain anything here as a defense. i hope my tone comes off as shyly concerned about people being mean to you, and not as passive-aggressive or heavy in insavory implication or whatever. my attitude is very Reading Rainbow, 🌈the more you know🌟, about all this. like huh! i didnt know what i didnt know about the definition of "homoerotic" and now i do. neat!
anyway, im rambling out of anxiety at this point
i do hope this helpful? idk, i may be saying a bunch of stuff you already know. im sorry if so
i do hope you have a good day and thank you for the fun game!

@fix-me-sixteen this is my summary of the ask
note that the entire thing is phrased in a way that gives the distinct impression that anon is speaking to a 14 year old

Is there even a single name out there for transmascs that people don't hate?
I see people making fun of:
Anything with an x, y, or z
Old-fashioned names
Names that are obvious literary references
Anything that's also a word
Anything too uncommon
Anything too "boring", like John/Kevin/Matthew
And the few names that manage to strike a decent balance, like Noah/Elliot/Finn/Oliver/Aiden, are chosen by transmascs and immediately become stereotypical transmasc names.

* For the purposes of this poll, assume the fanart explicitly depicts sexual activity, but is clearly labeled and posted in a way such that people will not see it unless they knowingly choose to click through to it
Feel free to elaborate on your response.

tumblr is such a funny website because nobody wants to be “famous” or go “viral”. the second one of my posts goes beyond my mutuals and my little corner i hate it. don’t look at me. don’t perceive me. i’m just playing with my barbies in the corner. i don’t want to be famous. don’t fill my notifications. those are reserved for the besties. get off my lawn. this is my shitpost and it’s invite only.

I really liked the name Finn, but ngl, the number of people who make fun of it has ruined it for me
#a lot of the other names on my list are even more stereotypically transmasc though#i guess i could go for a more basic name like luke or matthew or smth.

the name Fintan Pyren is so funny to me
grossly oversimplifying it, Fintan can mean "white fire" and Pyren can mean "funeral fire"
so essentially the "Fire" family named their kid "Fire Fire" and no one in the Lost Cities caught any clues that he would be
1. A pyrokinetic
2. An arsonist
like be so fr they saw the signs and decided "yk what, maybe our world needs a good purge"

Spin this wheel first and then this wheel second to generate the title of a YA fantasy novel!
