A decade ago the idea of seeing an Aquaman movie on the big screen seemed ridiculous. And the possibility of seeing a good Aquaman movie was even more preposterous. Yet here we are.

This character is inherently ridiculous, and the only way to make an Aquaman movie enjoyable is to embrace this ridiculousness and go all out with it. I am so glad James Wan did because it totally works. This movie has been receiving mixed reviews because some critics just don’t get it. This is how you should make an Aquaman movie. Go all out with the silliness complete with giant crabs, giant seahorses, and an octopus playing drums. If the producers decided to make a serious and realistic Aquaman movie, they’re gonna hate it as well because a serious, somber and realistic tone won’t jive with the ridiculous setting. With those types of critics, no Aquaman movie will ever be good so it’s best to ignore them. Mass audiences will lap this up because it’s so much fun to watch.

The pacing is great, it just whizzes by from one scene to the next so there’s hardly any dull moment. The action sequences were all excellent. My mouth dropped several times during a number of one shot scenes. The casting is superb. The acting is great, in fact it’s so good you wouldn’t realize how cheesy their lines are. The best part about this movie is definitely the visuals. The world James Wan created is incredibly detailed, and there’s something going on in every corner. It was mind blowing seeing this movie on an IMAX screen, especially that scene at the trench, and that huge battle near the end. WOW.  Anyone who’d say these visuals suck are either blind or Marvel Fanboys in denial. Liking the visual style is subjective, but there’s no denying the technical achievement in these visual effects.

Of course it’s not perfect. The soundtrack can be jarring at times, and even in such a ridiculous setting it was hard to ignore several illogical things — but hey, this isn’t a movie to take seriously. Just check your brain at the door and it’s gonna work. Because that’s the important part. We’ve been given an Aquaman movie that works. I kept my expectations really low and I was totally blown away.

Also I saw the movie because Prime was doing advanced screening at select theatres.

Context: were on a boat and were being attacked by pirates.

Lead pirate: give us your ship and everything on it or we’re going to kill all of you.

Dwarf: why should we? There’s three of you and six of us.

Me, a tiny kobald: yeah what makes you think you can beat us?

Lead pirate: were followers and sons of Poseidon and-

Me: WeRe SoNs Of PoSeIdOn bluh bla bluh
