Portrait of William I, King of the Netherlands by Joseph Paelinck, 1819, Museum of the Netherlands
From 1815 William I was King of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. He also ruled over a large colonial territory. After the fall of Napoleon, the British returned the Indonesian island of Java to the Netherlands. (This is why William here points to a map of West Java.) This portrait once hung in Buitenzorg, the palace of the governor-general of the Dutch East Indies on Java.
